2 Page 2 Christmas Wreath Information Sheets Our Christmas Wreath fund raiser is continuing. Your wreath packet has five submission forms to purchase wreathes for yourself, family, friends and clients. Wreaths cost between $38 to $43 and includes shipping to the recipient s address. Our club will receive $10 for every wreath purchased. This is a great opportunity to send a wonderful Christmas gift and raise much needed funds for our club s charitable giving. This is a time sensitive project as all forms must be submitted to the company by mid November for December shipping. You can get your packet by seeing Michelle Holcomb or Richard Karr. Here is an information sheet you can give to your wreath purchasers to help with their decision. There is also a fill-in order form available. Please talk to Michelle Richard for the details.
3 Page 3 Club Donates To Junior Achievement President Tony hands Dena Kidd a check for $2000 from our club Late last month, President Tony met with Dena Kidd at the Junior Achievement open house. Dena is the Senior Development and Stewardship Director for Junior Achievement of Arizona. Junior Achievement s goal is to empower future generations, and to equip them with the skills and knowledge to be successful and pursue their dreams. With the support of thousands of education, business and volunteer partners they are giving kids the tools to succeed. Volunteer mentors from the community teach students about the importance of money management, workforce readiness and entrepreneurial thinking. Arming today s youth with this critical education will result in less financial instability and debt, a better-trained workforce, a more robust economy and healthier families Our club has donated to his fine organization for the past several years. Tony is also an instructor/mentor for Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement day is November 14. Thanks Tony! Youth Exchange Staying Busy September has been off to a good start for our Youth Exchange Students! Over Labor Day weekend, our inbounds and a handful of volunteers and ROTEX traveled to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Students hiked Cathedral Rock, participated in a service project, cleaning up a local school, networked with Rotarians and explored one of the natural wonders of the world. A big THANK YOU to the Bill Family, Rotary Club of Sedona and Grand Canyon Rotary Club for making this special weekend happen. Our inbound students also had the opportunity to see their first baseball game (for some) at Rotary Day at the Diamondbacks. Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this possible!
4 Page 4 A Message From Your District Governor Dear Fellow Rotarians, October heralds that season in Arizona when desert-dwellers leave the confines of air conditioning and join the rest of the state in the glorious outdoors! This is a busy month for Rotary Clubs across our district, as we host events like Oktoberfests, Golf Tournaments, Wine Tastings and more! October is POLIO MONTH in our District, with October 24 designated as World Polio Day. There is no limit on what YOUR CLUB can do to bring attention (and donations) to the eradication of this dreadful disease! I join RI President Ian Riseley when he asks every Rotary club to participate in some way in World Polio Day activities Whether you host a silent auction, a virtual reality viewing, a fundraising walk, or a Purple Pinkie Day, your club can make a real difference. October is the month of our annual International event, the USA-Mexico Friendship Conference & Global Grants Exchange. This marks our 18 th year and we are hosting in Phoenix. Please talk to your clubs about how you can multiply your impact by participating in a Global Grant. Also, please consider Home Hosting one or two of our guests, a rewarding experience. As I continue to visit the wonderful clubs that make up our District, I am inspired by the energy and commitment we Rotarians demonstrate every day! Dozens of D5495 clubs responded with generous outpourings of support to those displaced by relentless hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. Clubs passed the hat ; Club Foundations made special matches to donations; volunteers mobilized; and, individuals quietly responded. Quick-thinking Rotarian Carol Costa, of Kingman Route 66, touted Rotary s well-deserved reputation for fiscal responsibility at a convention she was attending. She single-handedly raised over $5,000 for disaster relief! On the International Day of Peace, September 21, the Peoria Club held a beautiful community event that engaged school, citizens, law enforcement and government. The event honored a community Peacemaker. Our own Peace Fellow Christopher Zambakari was a featured speaker. Our Rotary presence is clearly and proudly woven into the fabric of our communities. We are partners, leaders, supporters, visionaries, activists, innovators and, Difference-Makers!
5 Page 5 Wear Your Blue Rotary Shirt On Tuesday Since we transferred from District 5510 to District 5495, there have been district changes that affect our club. One is the change from DacDB (an online database regarding club member information) to Club Runner, another database for our members. In order to keep our club information up to date, we need member photos. This allows the database information to correlate to the wonderful faces of our members. Please wear your blue Rotary shirt to Tuesday s meeting so we can get good photos of you and add it to the site. Ralph is our model for this piece. If you do not have a shirt, please see Jon Klesner Famous Rotarians J. William Fulbright, U. S. Senator was a member of the Rotary Club of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
