Hope you will gain some leadership insights in dealing with adversity and everyday life. } Currently - Missouri State University Faculty Practitioner-in-Residence } Retired, Director of Parks for the Springfield- Greene County Park Board } Past President of NRPA and MPRA } Co-Founder of Brio2 Solutions 1

2 } Successes and challenges come in many forms and chapters } It s about people, places, and timing of your life s chapters } Creating, controlling, and coping with your environmen tal surroundings (personnel and career) } and Learning How to Push the Pause Button Ø Child dancer/tennis player Ø Undefeated in high school tennis Ø Began a love for working in parks at age 16 Ø Played Division I Tennis at Missouri State University Ø Played Profession al Women s Tennis Tour Ø Graduated with a degree in Parks and Recreation Administration Ø Hired at 21 years old to be a manager with Springfield-Greene County Park Board Ø Went to work for the Park Board and passed up a Wild Card Bid to play Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, England Ø Began a 30 year officiating career (college/high school) in volleyball, basketball, tennis and softball 2

3 Ø Became a certified international tennis coach Ø MPRA Board of Directors/Past President Ø NRPA Board of Directors/Past President Ø General Manager of the World Team Tennis Professional Tennis Team Billie Jean King, Founder Springfield Lasers Ø US Open/USTA Board of Directors Opened Arthur Ashe Stadium Ø Implemen ted four USOC Community Olympic Programs for USA Tennis, USA Hockey, USA Archery, and USA Volleyball Ø Promoted six manager levels to the position of Director of Parks Springfield-Greene County Park Board Ø First woman Park s Director in 93 years of operation Springfield-Greene County Park Board Ø Planned or finished 72 projects in five years including ØBotanical Center ØSustainable Farm Park ØLake Boathouse and Water Craft Facility Ø50 Miles of Trails Ø Retired after 32 years of full-time employment SGCPB Ø Worked for Unites States Olympic Committee Team USA in London, England (2012 Summer Olympic Games) 3

5 Ø Traveled one place a month for four years, across the world; examples include: ØAfrica ØAustralia ØChina and other countries Ø Began teaching in higher education In Parks and Recreation Program/Department of Kinesiology Missouri State University Ø Developed and operate a Women Owned small business with Co-Founder, Dr. Peggy Riggs Retired Deputy Superintendent with Springfield Public Schools 5

6 Ø Consult with corporations and organizations: ØPlayCore/GameTime ØUSAA - USA Archery ØUSTA - US Tennis ØCity/County Governments ØNoble Communications ØLose and Associates and others Ø And most importantly, spending time with my family and significant others 1. Treat people with respect; 2. Follow the Platinum Rule Make people feel comfortable around you; 3. Ditch the small talk Create quality conversation s; don t beat around the bush 4. Eliminate detractors cell phones, finish conversation s with people before switching to another person who wants your attention); 5. Don t try too HARD Don t dominate the conversation; allow people to comment, all you can, during the conversatio n; 6. Understand differences between Fact and Fiction (respect people who give you facts/not fictional accounts of a situation); 7. Be transparent!!! 8. Be authentic Walk the Talk; 6

7 9. Smile During conversatio ns and when speaking to groups; 10. Make an effort to dress appropriately: don t over dress or under dress; lead by example profession, but comfortable; 11. Remember everyone s time is valuable be known for running effective, efficient, and timely meetings (Be on time!) Ø Create or find an executive group of women of middle to upper management (CEO s, Public or Private) (Up and coming managers, leaders, etc.); Ø Consider once a week sitting outside on your deck, in a park or lake bank and just reflect on what all you are thankful for IN YOUR LIFE (30-60 minutes); Ø Learn to Smell the Roses as public projects are completed, public events are accomplished, and recognitions are received. Ø Four Daily Habits That Will Make You Happier by Neil Pasricha ØTake three brisk walks per week 20 minutes each time ØReplay your day 20 minutes ØMeditate each day 20 minutes ØDo five Random Acts of Kindness per week 20 minutes each 9

10 Ø Financial planning is a given timing is everything Ø Think about what you haven t been able to do during the past ten years Ø Start planning for extended travel Ø New career choices Ø Teaching ØStarter at a golf course ØVolunteer at a local food pantry ØCreate your own business Ø Spend more time with family Ø Open up time to have a true, personal life of sharing with a special someone or friends Ø Consider hobbies like Pickleball, other sports, art, shows, and working out Ø Having a daily schedule is overrated Ø Enjoy day trips Ø At your current job, the key is Don t stay too long if you can retire! 10
