WHARTON CENTER SENSORY-FRIENDLY INITIATIVES What ARE sensory-friendly / autism / relaxed cultural arts experiences? Ø Cultural arts experiences adapted to individuals with sensory, social, and cognitive differences or disabilities. Who has sensory, social, and cognitive differences or disabilities? Ø Persons with Autism, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, attention disorders, psychiatric disabilities and others. 1

What is the current situation? (primarily autism and related conditions) Ø A new case of autism is diagnosed in the United States every 15 minutes. Ø One in every 68 children in the United States has autism, Asperger s disorder, pervasive development disorder (PDD) or other autism spectrum disorder. Ø These disorders occur in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Ø It is estimated that the rate of autism births may increase to 50% in the United States by the year Range of challenges Ø Receiving, integrating & interpreting information Ø Sensory sensitivities Ø Behavioral & social difficulties Ø Communication differences 2

Cultural Entities Present HUGE challenges: Ø LIGHTS & NOISES ØSMELLS & TEXTURES Ø CROWDS & S P A C E S Ø VISUAL STIMULATION Ø INTENSITY OF INFORMATION Meaningful social activities are needed. Ø People on the spectrum and their families desire the same entertainment and social opportunities as everyone, but are often constrained from attending or participating. Ø They have difficulty processing sensory input; they sometimes have difficulty modulating their response to lights, sound and action. Ø They require special accommodations that allow the opportunity to: Ø Prepare for the experience. Ø Move or make sounds in response to what they are experiencing. Ø They also may need the opportunity to remove themselves from the experience for a period of time. 3

We urgently need to create fun, social environments that have the needs of people with autism as a starting point, not an afterthought. It s crucial that people with autism live the lives they choose not the lives chosen for them and having the choice to go to a gig or a social event is a really important part of that. - The National Autistic Society of Great Britain Benefits of Performing Arts Exposure & Involvement: Ø Create empathy Ø Increase vocabulary Ø Instill discipline, collaboration, confidence Ø Increase tolerance Ø Better academic performance Ø Increase social skills 4

... rich engagement in theater can help children take leaps in their understanding of the world and their place in it. We know from the science of the brain that the most powerful learning takes place with an accompanying emotional experience. - Teresa Dayley Love, Brigham Young University Theatre for Young Audiences director/writer/producer Students with autism spectrum disorders who participate in and attend drama and theater can learn critical social skills in a safe and structured environment. - John D. Newman, Utah Valley University - Noorda Theatre Center for Children and Youth Director 5

Ø Benefits include greater community, civic, and social participation as a person transitions from childhood into adulthood. Ø People with sensory, social, and learning differences have the capacity to participate in a range of community activities when provided the opportunity and appropriate supports. - Roger I. Ideishi, JD, OT/L, FAOTA Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy University of the Sciences, Samson College of Health Sciences, Philadelphia, PA; et al. FAMILY NEEDS & CONCERNS (Ideishi & Mendonca, 2012 & 2013) Ø Is it for the entire family? Ø Getting to event Ø What is the escape plan? Ø Who will help me? Ø Is it a safe space? Ø Is it a good day for my family member? Ø How much will it cost when it s a risk? 6
