It focuses on the episodes that have shaped the ways in which Koreans understand their past, covering the following major themes: colonialism and anti-colonialism, war and occupation, and the struggle for a more democratic polity. Students will make use of a range of materials including political tracts, literary accounts, and contemporary and historical film. Course Objectives A successful student will: Demonstrate basic knowledge of the major issues in the history of Korea Learn how to conduct basic historical research: use the print and electronic resources of the library to find primary and secondary sources, compile bibliographies, use web resources effectively and correctly quote and cite sources. Critically evaluate primary and secondary sources Develop compelling historical arguments and express them in clear writing Produce an effectively written analytical research paper that gathers primary sources, analyzes them in the context of secondary literature and then marshals the evidence in support of a coherent historical argument. Course Requirements and Grades Class participation 20% Quizzes 15% Midterm exam 25% Final Research Paper 40% Final grades will be calculated as follows:

3 Course Participation. (20%) Your participation grade is based on attendance and contributions to class discussion. Contributions are graded on quality rather than quantity. In addition to oral comments, students can get credit for participating on the class Sakai website. A student may earn credit by commenting on course reading within three days of that week s discussion, or on other students posts up five days after that week s discussion. Posts should make a contribution to the class discussion rather than simply summarizing the reading. There will also be three ungraded self-evaluations, in which you are responsible for monitoring your own progress. In addition, unannounced quizzes may occur at the discretion of the instructor. Quizzes. (15%) Three quizzes based on course readings. This includes one map quiz and two short-answer quizzes based on the reading. (9/2, 9/30, 11/2) Midterm Examination. (25%) The in-class midterm examination is based on course assignments and class discussion. It consists of both short answer and essay questions. (10/14) Final Paper. (40%) The final research paper is a page paper on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor. (12/17) Only course grades of C or better will satisfy Writing requirement, general education, and college basic distribution credit. All assignments must be made available in hard copy. ed assignments will not be accepted. Late assignments will be accepted only in the case of a major medical or family emergency or other acceptable reasons for excused absence according to UF policy, with supporting documentation. Use of electronic devices (computers, cell phones) to surf the web or communicate (i.e., , instant messaging, Facebook, texting) is prohibited during class. Cell phones may be on vibrate to receive UF emergency notifications. The only permissible

10 use of computers is to take notes or consult course readings. Violation of this policy will result in points deducted from the participation grade. Attendance and Participation. Punctual attendance is mandatory and counts towards the participation portion of your grade (20%). Persistent lateness or unexcused absences will result in loss of the class participation grade: for every unexcused absence, your participation grade will be deducted by a third of a grade. Multiple unexcused absences may result in a failing grade for the course. In this course, it is especially important that you do not commit PLAGIARISM which is the failure to properly cite and give credit when you use the ideas, words, phrases, or arguments of other people in your writing assignments. Keep in mind that material from the Internet is intellectual property and cannot be copied and pasted and presented as your own work. As you would with a source in hard copy, you must distinguish copied phrases from Internet sources with quotation marks and you must make proper attribution to the original author. Plagiarism constitutes intellectual theft and academic dishonesty. If you are at all worried that you might be in danger of plagiarism or any other honor code violation, you should ASK me (not another student) in advance.
