1 MAC 2311 CALCULUS 1 FALL SEMESTER 2015 COURSE DESCRIPTION MAC Class meets at 12:00 13:50 TR in BU 307. URL: Instructor: Dr. Timothy Ford, Professor Office: SE 216 Phone: Office hours: 10:00 11:00 MWF and other times by appointment. ford@fau.edu Prerequisite: MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 both with a minimum grade of C, or MAC 1147 with a minimum grade of C, or a passing score on the ALEKS algebra, precalculus and trigonometry pretest with a minimum score of 65. Textbook: Calculus Early Transcendentals, second edition, by Briggs, Cochran and Gillett, c 2015 Pearson Education, ISBN-13: , ISBN-10: Course content, objectives, and learning outcome goals: This is the first course in the Calculus sequence. Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to solve problems in the following areas and achieve the quantitative skills required for courses requiring Calculus 1: (1) Limits. (2) Continuity. (3) Differentiation. (4) Curve sketching. (5) Transcendental and inverse functions. (6) The Mean Value Theorem. (7) L Hospital s Rule. (8) Related rates and related rates problems. (9) Optimization problems. (10) Introduction to integration, including the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. (11) The application of mathematical modeling to other disciplines and real-world problems using a variety of functions. More information is available at the URL: Attendance and classroom etiquette: Regular attendance at the lectures is expected. It is the student s responsibility to know what is going on in class. To minimize disruption to the learning environment, you are requested to arrive on time and not leave until the end of class. It is the student s responsibility to notify the instructor prior to any anticipated absence, and within a reasonable amount of time after an unanticipated absence. Also, you are requested to refrain from looking at cellphones and computers during lecture. Homework: To effectively learn Calculus, it is necessary to have a daily study routine. This routine should involve reading the material as presented in the text, reviewing class notes, and working problems. The problems studied should include (but not be limited to) those assigned by the instructor. A significant portion of each class session is devoted to answering questions from the assignments. The exams consist of problems similar to the homework problems. The homework exercises will be posted at the class URL which appears at the top of page one. Tutoring: Tutoring by graduate students will be available Monday through Friday, at the Math Learning Center (MLC), located at GS 211. For tutoring resources, visit this URL: Test policy: The following are not allowed during exams or quizzes: computer, calculator, graphing calculator, cell phone, book, notes, electronic gadget, restroom visit, cheating. Quizzes and exams: Almost every class session there will be a short quiz. Quizzes are taken in our usual classroom. The quiz will cover the most recent sections of the text. The quiz will last about 10 to 15 minutes. There are no makeup quizzes. There will be 3 midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam. Tentative dates of the exams are Sep. 10, Oct. 15, Nov. 12, and Dec. 6. The exact dates of the exams will be announced at least 1 week in advance. Midterm exams are taken in our usual classroom and last about 50 minutes. Makeup Exams: Makeup exams will be given only under circumstances which coincide with university policy ( academics.php#policiesall). It is the student s responsibility to establish with documentation that the exam was missed for a solid reason. The student cannot make up a missed midterm or final exam without such documentation. If you miss an exam, you must provide a written, verifiable excuse, if possible in advance of the scheduled exam. Approval for a makeup exam must be obtained from your instructor. Final Exam: A comprehensive final examination will be given during the final exam week. The time of this exam is set by the university and is Sunday, December 6, 2015, 16:00 18:30. The location is PS 109.

3 Grades: The final grade will be based on the following scheme: quiz grade: 100 points midterm one: 100 midterm two: 100 midterm three: 100 final exam: 200 total possible: 600 points The grading scale is based on the number of points accumulated.
