CHRIS FUENTES Age: 50 Occupation: Film Location Manager FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL We can maintain the highest level of resident services if we cut wasteful spending and get back to basics. Qualifi ed: My professional background meeting corporate budgets, dealing with government agencies, solving problems between private sector interests and the public, all starts with people. Involved: I lead the successful initiative limiting council members to two consecutive terms, opening the process to new people and ideas. I lead opposition to the Joint Venture scheme, which would have exposed Cerritos to decades of fi nancial loss and compounded the impact of the state fi nancial crisis. Innovative: As Fine Arts Commissioner, I worked to build a legitimate Arts program, audit expenditures, call for transparency and cut waste. My immediate goals: Improve maintenance/landscaping citywide, clean up blighted areas, fi x walls & sidewalks, trim and replace problem trees, common sense code enforcement, lower Administrative overhead. I will push for enhanced efforts to deal with gang activity, property crime, graffi ti and vandalism. Community safety is a top priority. My focus is on Cerritos not international issues, partisan politics or special interests. I have no confl ict of interest. Cerritos is my hometown, I attended Whitney High and Cerritos College. BARROWS Age: 63 Occupation: Councilmember, City of Cerritos Dear Cerritos Voter, FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL Most economic forecasts are predicting 5 more diffi cult years for our region. If true, then it is extremely important who serves our city as a councilmember to maintain our fi scal stability and to protect our local autonomy from fi nancial raids by our State. It will require a well-informed councilmember who can maintain effective and effi cient city operations and work with other agencies, by lobbying and advocate on behalf of our residents. My goal is to protect our fi nancial strength, our reserves and to contain costs with no taxes charged to our residents and businesses. It is imperative that we continue to seek economic growth for our community in order to preserve our services and programs for our residents. I will continue to seek ways to further decrease crime. Just as I will look to fi nd additional ways to improve our relationships with our schools, colleges and neighboring cities. My reputation as a hard working, dedicated responsive public servant to all residents is my promise to you. 6 NAME: JOSEPH CHO Age: 66 Occupation: Councilmember, City of Cerritos FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL It has been an honor to serve as your representative on the City Council for the last four years. During that time, the City of Cerritos has received numerous awards including the All America City award, the Conference of Mayors Outstanding Achievement award, and the Most Business Friendly City award. We received all of these awards while our country experienced the worst recession in over 70 years. Despite this recession, the City of Cerritos has been able to continue to provide high-quality services to its residents without laying off a single employee. However, Cerritos is not immune from the recession and tough decision had to be made in order to weather the economic storm. As tough as things have been these last few years, the next four years promise to be even more challenging, as sources of revenue that we have come to rely upon will expire. I am now seeking re-election to the City Council. I would like to help our city face the challenges that will undoubtedly come in the near future. After graduating from Whitney High and UCLA, I earned a Master s in Public Policy from the University of Chicago. I returned home to Cerritos to marry my high school sweetheart, Gloria, raise our family and give back to our community for my many blessings. As an ABC School Boardmember, I have a proven record of fi scal responsibility, asking the tough questions, and keeping our schools among the best in the nation. Throughout my career, I have worked to bring people together from throughout our diverse city, whether on the Cerritos Community Safety Committee, as a PTA member, soccer coach, or District Director for our State Senator. You deserve a councilmember who will: Ensure that the safety of our community is the top priority; Preserve the quality of life for all residents; Strengthen our local economy in partnership with small businesses; and Reinvest in our infrastructure, streets, sidewalks and city trees. In 1992 I was fi rst elected to the city council and served for 9 years. In 1995 and 2000, I served as the mayor. During the years that I served on the council, I voted for the following projects to enhance the city: Sheriff s Station, Towne Center, Senior Center, three Senior Housing developments, 91 Freeway Overpass at Shoemaker, expansion of the Cerritos Library, gymnasiums and sports facilities for Cerritos, Gahr and Whitney High Schools, and renovations of our major Parks, including CPE, Heritage & Liberty. Although our city is well developed, the recent global fi nancial crisis has inevitably touched us. Our income has been reduced but our expenses continue. As your council person I will secure a balanced budget that will ensure that essential city services are maintained without any city tax increase or any new city taxes. I will use my experience as a business professional to guide the city through these diffi cult fi nancial times.
