2 Nationalism in China How can nationalism be used to create social order, a common purpose, and help the government maintain control? All these things can be used in a positive or negative way.

4 Review: What does nationalism mean? Nationalism: Extreme pride in your country. Patriotic feelings, principles or efforts Feeling that your country is superior to any other country

5 Chinese Nationalism The Chinese people do not have national spirit. Therefore, even though we have four hundred million people gathered together in one China, in reality they are a heap of loose sand. What does this quote mean? What is this quote suggesting about the importance of nationalism?

6 China In the early 1900 s, China was a democracy corrupt favored the wealthy peasant farmers suffering and distraught (deeply upset)

7 Communists REVIEW: What do communists believe in? equality for everyone no social classes peasant farmers and laborers work the hardest and deserve more credit Why would communism sound appealing to the Chinese people at this moment in history? Who would oppose this change?

8 Mao Zedong/Tse Tung Believed that peasants were true revolutionaries Wanted to rid China of corruption. Led a revolution called the Cultural Revolution.

9 Cultural Revolution peasants and workers equal peasants were heroes intellectual and artistic activity considered dangerous Intellectuals had to purify themselves by hard labor in the fields Old Chinese traditions were abandoned and destroyed in order to start new ones.

10 The Red Guards Mao realized that his movement and revolution could only be won with the help of China s youth. He had to convince the youth that the most important thing to them should be China; not their families or friends. Families were broken apart and relationships ended because of this form of nationalism. These students were known as Mao s red guards. Chairman Mao has defined our future as an armed revolutionary youth organization So if Chairman Mao is our Red Commander-in-Chief and we are his red guards, who can stop us?

11 Mao Wins! Mao converts China into a communist country and begins his Great Leap Forward What sorts of adjustments have to happen? collectivization- farmers were joined together into groups called collectives/communes. The commune would have a food quota (goal) that would go to the state (government). The rest of the food left over was for the people in the commune. redistribution- Mao collected all the farming materials and passed them back out to the public equally.

12 People in a commune gave up their ownership of tools, animals etc so that everything was owned by the commune.

14 Disaster of the Great Leap Forward Mao s ideas of collectivization ultimately did not work. Drought (lack of rain or water), famine, and poor government planning led to the starvation deaths of million people. Many historians call this the Great Leap Backward.

15 How Did Mao Gain Control? One of his famous tactics was PROPAGANDA. What is propaganda? information or material spread to advance a cause. How does propaganda work?

16 Mao s Little Red Book Published by the Government of the People s Republic of China from Collections of quotes by Mao Ze Dong Requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, read, and carry it at all times.

17 Aftermath of the Cultural Revolution Although Mao and his red guards fought to free China, many experts believe it did the exact opposite. While the number is not confirmed, it is believed that 3-10 million people died during China;s Cultural Revolution. (deaths include both civilians and red guards)

18 Chinese accused of being against Chairman Mao and his movement. Dazibaos (Propaganda posters) hung around the necks of the accused publicly shaming them.
