1 The Providence, R.I.-New Bedford, Mass. Designated Market Area is located along the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. and encompasses the state of Rhode Island as well as the southeastern coastal areas of Massachusetts. It is home to a total population of approximately 1.6 million people and the headquarters of CVS Caremark and Textron, two Fortune 500 companies. Population 2015 Ranking 2015 Population Total 54 1,623,181 Hispanic ,205 White non-hispanic 43 1,263,174 Black non-hispanic 92 73,373 Asian non-hispanic 46 44,984 Although the White Non-Hispanic segment currently makes up about 80% of the DMA s total population, its size decreased nearly 6% between 2000 and During the same period, the DMA s Hispanic and Asian Non-Hispanic populations experienced significant growth, approximately 70% and 50% respectively. Over half of the DMA s Hispanic population is of Dominican or Puerto Rican descent, and large concentrations of Hispanics reside within ZIP codes in cities like Elmwood, Pawtucket and West Warwick. Large Asian Non-Hispanic populations are found in ZIP codes within cities like Barrington, East Greenwich and Providence. Meanwhile, the size of the Black Non- Hispanic segment increased about 40% between 2000 and Large concentrations of Blacks reside within ZIP codes in cities like Providence and New Bedford. In addition, the Providence-New Bedford DMA currently ranks among the top 10% of the nation s largest adult LGBT populations. In 2015, the median household income in the DMA was nearly $57,000 a year. The region s most lucrative business sectors include education, fishing, jewelry and silverware design, heath-care and manufacturing. Furthermore, the DMA ranks among the top 20% of the nation s largest populations with a Bachelor s degree or higher.
