2 MCN recognizes the importance of the work that migrant women do and health risks they take in moving for work----often across borders, exposing their families to the uncertainties of a mobile life, and performing the work in occupations such as agriculture. Be sure to view some of MCN resources related to Women's Health: LO QUE BIEN EMPIEZA...BIEN ACABA - Pesticide Prevention During Pregnancy Comic Book Lead Clinical Guideline for Pregnant Migrant Women and screening tool Reproductive Health Effects of Pesticide Exposure (monograph in English and Spanish) Check out all the events that are taking place for International Women's Day on the official website. A crowdfunding campaign is currently running to fund the launch of a mobile application targeted for farmworker, farmer, and outreach workers. This free app, called CampesinoSOS (Farmworker SOS), will help migrant farm workers locate resources as they travel hand harvesting crops across the country. If you would like to help contribute to this project or for more information click here. Health Network All women's health titles by Hesperian Health Guides are on sale through March 8th. Receive 25% off on all women's health titles by Hesperian, including Where Women Have No Doctor, A Book for Midwives, and A Health Handbook for Women With Disabilites in English and Spanish! Liebman, MPA, MA, Director of Environmental & Occupational Health, will be part of a keynote panel on the health and safety of immigrant dairy workers. She will share preliminary findings from the Seguridad en las Lecherías: Immigrant Dairy Worker Health and Safety Project. This project is a collaborative effort of the Upper Midwest Agriculture Safety and Health Center, National Farm Medicine Center and MCN. The conference offers an excellent opportunity to improve your understanding of the health and safety needs of migrant and immigrant farmworkers while networking with food producers, advocates, educators, students, and policy makers who regularly interact with this special population. View our calendar for registration information. Health Network is a program to establish continuity of care for mobile patients. We are currently scheduling Health Network enrollment trainings. 3 Indigenous Knowledge Conference Friday, April 26, 2013 Oxnard College (Oxnard, CA) The Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) has organized this event to cover: The Oaxacan indigenous Community in Ventura County Oaxacan indigenous traditions and beliefs How to provide culturally-aware services to the indigenous community Migration patterns and history Interpretation and language access Indigenous perspectives on health and education View their facebook event for more information BLOG ENTRY Educational Attainment for Farmworkers By Daniela Delgado The notion of equal opportunity is a reason for migrating to the United States. Educational advancement forms part of this notion, yet the educational attainment of some immigrant groups, including farmworkers, is still low. In the U.S., a third of child farmworkers drop out before graduating from high school and the mean highest grade completed by farmworkers is eighth grade (Human Rights Watch, 2010; NAWS, ). Additionally, the constant mobility of migrant children and the need of some to work in the fields are contributing factors to high dropout rates (National Center for Farmworker Health, 2011). The low education of migrant workers is also an index for their low wages. Farmworkers earn $9.12 per hour and a median income of $18,970 per year, which is below the poverty line for a family of three (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012; NAWS, ). The deficit in education increases migrant workers' vulnerability, as the inability to leave farm work can lead to withstanding abuse and inadequate working conditions... [read more] EHRs MCN strongly supports including work information, namely industry and occupation, in electronic health records (EHRs). Information related to the patient's occupation is important in the recognition and management of injuries, illnesses and exposures... This image will be used for a Tuberculosis education, prevention and awareness campaign. The winning image was submitted by High School CBTIS 128 and the team advised by teacher Eva Mendoza, with students Diego Armando Lozano Andazola, Jashua Armendáriz, Josué Rodriguez, Karen Ivette Duarte Durán, Odalis Elías Rodríguez, and Daniela Mendoza. 5 This contest was hosted by Dr. Luis Mauricio Acosta, Assistant Director of Sanitary District II; Dr. Esteban Vlasich; Gloria Cardenas; Maria Francisca Guerrero; Adrian Garcia Castro; Santiago Garcia; Alberto Maya; Laura Hernandez; and Graciela Hernandez. MCN recently invited colleagues, as part of a grant application, to write an original short poem that reflected the heart of MCN's mission. We were touched and profoundly moved by the response from MCN's friends. We did not receive the grant, but we did receive gifts of enduring value. The first of them appears here. Other poems will appear over the next few months. We are grateful to and thankful for this community of caring. BORN TO CARE For Migrant Clinicians Network by James O'Barr Born to care, 'cause that's our calling, going where poor workers go for the work that needs the doing, and the wage, a life of woe. Born to care, we ask for justice, and we dare demand their right to a life of health and wholeness, not in shadow, but in light. Born to care, we serve the migrants, giving what we have to share, hands and hearts and minds and spirits, and our love----we're born to care. 5/6
