1 THE HUGUENOT HERALD Volume 24, Number 3 Fall 2014 UPCOMING EVENTS: Deadline for Huguenot Society of South Carolina undergraduate and graduate scholarships is 31 Dec Huguenot Society of South Carolina Hall at Charles Towne Landing. SOCIETY HEADQUARTERS UNDERGOING MAJOR REPAIRS When it comes to old buildings in Charleston, one needed repair often leads to another and another in a cascading effect. This summer, we discovered that our headquarters building at 138 Logan Street was in need of significant repair. The primary issue was that each of the six dormers has leaked into the building, with water running inside the walls down all three floors to the street and causing significant areas of rot. The windows and rear porch are in need of repair, and the exterior stairs need to be rebuilt. The roof is in good shape, but needs cleaning, painting, and repair to the dormers. After replacement of all the rotten wood, the building will be painted. Our goal is to dry in the building, and halt any additional damage. In light of the significant expense of these much needed repairs, the Building Committee spent several weeks exploring our options. It concluded, and the board agreed, that undertaking the repairs was worthwhile as it would enhance the value of the building by at least a like amount, and it allows us to stay right where we are in a headquarters which has served us well for almost 25 years. One of the damaged windows. Repairs are just beginning after major packing and rearranging of the library and offices. In order to access the windows and other areas that need repair, Renée and Cheves will have packed or moved most of the library and all our member files at least once as the repairs begin on the third floor and work down to the first floor. The Society is still open during our regular hours, but we ask that researchers please call ahead before visiting to make sure that we have access to the materials they need. If the weather cooperates, we expect the repairs will be completed by the end of March. In conclusion, Renée, Cheves, Katie, the Building Committee, and the Board view what started as one leaking window last summer as an opportunity to make an important investment in 138 Logan Street and therefore in the future of our Society. We thank you in advance for your patience and support as we undertake this important work.

2 FROM THE PRESIDENT The past few months have been a very busy and productive time for the Society. Renée, Cheves and Katie are well on their way to successfully completing an autumn version of spring cleaning at 138 Logan Street and the Society's home is looking better than ever. This work will be followed by even more substantial improvements at our headquarters as described in the article appearing on page one. You will be hearing more about this exciting project in the coming months so please stay tuned for further developments. Another recent success is the generous response of the Membership to our Annual Appeal. With a strong year-end finish, we hope to reach new levels of giving in this critically important category of support. On behalf of the Board and our wonderful professional staff, I thank everyone for past and future contributions to the Annual Fund. BOARD OF DIRECTORS President 1st Vice President Helga Preston Wrenn Billings Secretary Treasurer Vice Presidents Charles B. Upshaw III Russell B. Guerard In closing, I wish to acknowledge another success the life of Arthur Manigault Wilcox. The news accounts, editorials, letters to the editor and the obituary which followed his death on October 13, noted the many contributions Admiral Wilcox made to his City, State and Nation. Of course, those contributions include his twenty-five years as a member of the Huguenot Society, and his six years as President. One of the most significant contributions he made to the Huguenot Society was his steadfast commitment to our headquarters relocating to 138 Logan Street following the damage to our previous home caused by Hurricane Hugo. There is a lovely symmetry in the fact that our generation now seeks to preserve and protect the building an earlier generation made possible for us. Shortly before he died, I wrote Admiral Wilcox that I was honored to follow in his footsteps at the Society. I know that sentiment is shared by all who had the wonderful good fortune to know Arthur Manigault Wilcox and now follow him in continuing his good works at the Huguenot Society. 3 ANNOUNCING THE PUBLICATION OF FRENCH SANTEE: A HUGUENOT SETTLEMENT IN COLONIAL SOUTH CAROLINA BY SUSAN BALDWIN BATES AND HARRIOTT CHEVES LELAND ESTIMATED PUBLICATION DATE: MARCH 2015, OTTER BAY BOOKS The Huguenot Society of South Carolina is thrilled to announce the upcoming publication of French Santee: A Huguenot Settlement in Colonial South Carolina by Susan Baldwin Bates and Harriott Cheves Leland. French Santee is an in-depth study of the seventeenth-century Huguenot settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina, with biographical sketches of the more than 100 French Protestant families who lived there. Signatures, seals and cattle brands of some of the earliest immigrants are reproduced in some of the sketches. Translations of early letters written from Carolina prior to 1700, detailed maps, photographs and copies of old plats chronicle the changes as the settlement grew and evolved into the eighteenth century. Thorough documentation and indexing mark this as a scholarly work, yet the captivating details and relationships of the families on the river will draw you into their stories. You may begin by reading about your own family, but you will soon find yourself turning to their neighbors and friends, tracing the history of their plantations and untangling their relationships. French Santee is a hardback with more than 450 pages, and will retail for approximately $ We expect that it will be available at the Society by mid to late March Cheves and Susan will be the speakers at the Society s Annual Meeting at Charles Towne Landing on Thursday, 16 April We will have a book signing during the reception. Members of the Society will be able to reserve copies to be picked up at the Annual Meeting, or to be mailed to them after the book is published in While we are not taking payments at this time, as the exact price is yet to be determined, if you are interested in reserving a copy of French Santee, please Cheves at archivist@huguenotsociety.org to let her know. A preview from French Santee: At the end of the seventeenth century, driven by the terrible persecution in France, thousands of Huguenots fled their country in search of religious freedom. A large number found what they sought in the fledgling colony of Carolina in the new world. Here these noblemen, craftsmen and artisans, with their wives and children, took up axes, hoes and guns and struggled to build their homes and survive in the wilderness. Nowhere was this more evident than on the banks of the Santee River where a group of French refugees arrived in 1687 and where a sail from a boat was our first house and the earth our bed. A cabin like that of savages was our second house. Through their letters and the tantalizing bits and pieces of recorded history they left behind, their struggles and triumphs to forge a new settlement are revealed. At French Santee, they established what became a wealthy plantation society, until time and fate returned the land they had conquered to wilderness once more CUT LIMESTONE BLOCKS FOUND ON THE SANTEE French Santee The Settlers: On the following page is a list of the families with biographical sketches in French Santee. Sketches range from a few lines to many pages, depending on how much could be learned about the families.
