1 2014 IMMIGRATION & URBANIZATION PROJECT CHOICES AND INFO Choose a project or projects that total 30 points. If you work in groups, you must have a total of 60 points. You may choose your groups, but ask Ms. E. about the groupings. There is a limit on the size of each group and some projects go well together. You must make a Reference page for your research for all of your choices (combined). (See guidelines at end of choices.) CHOICES: IMMIGRANT FAIR DISPLAY & PRESENTATION... You will BE an Immigrant! (40 points) (Each of these will be from a different country... This will depend on your individual class... Ms. E. will make the final determination of which country you will be an immigrant from.) Research one of the typical home countries - its customs, culture, history - to present at the fair. (Keep in mind that in the early 1900s the most significant number of immigrants came from Europe.) You will write a first person story and make a display featuring aspects of your homeland and new life in America. Taking the view point of an immigrant that came to the United States between 1865 and 1915, create and type a first-person story about why your immigration experience. Include the answers to the following in your story: What is your name? Where are you from? What year is it now that you re talking to the fair goers? Why did you leave your homeland (push factors)? What the journey was like getting to the United States? What your original plan/why did you want to come to America (Pull Factors)? - Where did you think you would live? - What did you think you would do for a living? Where did you arrive (Ellis or Angel Island)? What happened at the processing center when you arrived? Where did you settle? What did you actually do for a living? How were you treated by nativists (people who already lived in the United States)? How well did you acculturate? (Explain your answer.) Was the trip worth it? (In other words, are you glad you came to the U.S.?) AND Why or why not? (When answering why or why not, consider these questions: Do you plan to stay? Do you plan to return home?) You also must consider these questions for this project (and do them): What are you going to display to show aspects of your homeland to the fair goers? What will you display to show how you acculturated to America?
2 MODEL CITY... ARCHITECT (40 points) Build a model replica of an American city (urban city) of the late 1800s to early 1900s, correctly displaying the general set up of cities of the time. (Models should be relatively to scale, should be no larger than a student desktop and 3-D.) Within your model, ACCURATELY demonstrate your knowledge of the following: - Where the different classes of people lived (Rich, middle class, and poor) - Different types of housing in appropriate location - Evidence of where the immigrants lived - Entertainment facilities - Businesses, skyscrapers, department stores - Transportation system(s) - Community Organizations (buildings they work out of) - Schools, Safety departments, settlement houses, government buildings, etc. - Key/Legend on or near model - Your model and buildings should be built relatively to scale. * Make sure your model shows pride in workmanship. MODEL CITY BROCHURE... You re a Property Developer, Real Estate Agent, Advertising Executive, or Travel Agent - YOU ARE YOUR CITY S #1 SALESPERSON!) Make a brochure that attracts people to live in your city and/or visit there as tourists. Your brochure should accurately highlight the following: - Leisure and Entertainment options/sights to see - Housing options (for all budgets) - Schools, Safety departments, settlement houses, government buildings, etc. - Shopping facilities - Transportation services - City highlights - Nature places /Parks - Employment opportunities * Make sure your brochure is neatly formatted, proofread/spell-checked (free of spelling, grammar, and capitalization errors), accurate, attractive and organized. *** It is helpful to have more than one copy of your brochure on the day of the presentations. POLITICAL ANALYST (SPECIALIZING IN IMMIGRATION) Should the United States follow a policy of allowing free and open immigration? Should the United States pass new laws limiting the number of immigrants allowed into the country? These questions and others concerning immigration, continue to trouble Americans from all backgrounds, socioeconomic classes, and professions. Decide your own answers to these questions by going online or to the library/media center to learn more about how Americans feel about immigration and why. Then, choose one side of the issue, and write an opening statement that you could present in a class or school debate. (Provide a list of talking points with evidence/support that support your statement.)
3 MODEL CITY VIRTUAL TOUR... You are a photographer or videographer! Create a PowerPoint or MovieMaker video to attract people to live in your city or visit there as tourists. Your tour should accurately highlight/reflect the following: - Leisure and Entertainment options/sights to see - Housing options (for all budgets) - Schools, Safety departments, settlement houses, government buildings, etc. - Shopping facilities - Transportation services - City highlights - Nature places /Parks - Employment opportunities * Make sure your tour is neatly formatted, proofread/spell-checked (free of spelling, grammar, and capitalization errors), accurate, attractive and organized. OR, if you speak, make sure you use proper language, pronunciation, etc. and that you enunciate and speak clearly with moderate speed. *** It is helpful to have more than one copy of your tour created and saved - to the H: drive, a flash drive, etc. - so that you can access it immediately and with ease on presentation day. PROGRESSIVE REFORMER (You may not choose the other Progressive Reformer choice if you choose this one.) In the late 19 th & early 20 th centuries, more immigrants than ever before arrived in America. Most of them settled in cities, although they usually came from rural areas. Write a proposal for a program that would help immigrants to adjust to life in an American city in Focus on the most challenging aspects of an immigrant s life in an American city. Decide what type of organization will run your program. Will it be local government, state government, federal government, or another organization? Decide what challenge(s) your program would address and which immigrants it would serve. Make sure you explain the problem, describe each step of the proposal and its/their importance, and why you think your plan creates the best solution. CITY PLANNING...You re a Civil Engineer ACCURATELY Draw (and label) a map of an city of an American City (late 1800s to early 1900s). Draw it on an 8 ½" X 11" paper or graph paper. Your map should include: Tenements, Evidence of where immigrants live, Skyscrapers, Where the Poor, Middle Class, and Rich lived and types of homes they lived in, Entertainment and Sporting places, Transportation systems (Railroads/Elevated Trains/Subways), Shopping facilities, Community Organizations, Safety Departments, and have a legend/key and be drawn to scale relalatively to scale.
4 MODERN DAY RESEARCHER Compare & Contrast the immigrant experience of those coming to the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s to those coming to the United States today (past decade to the present). Do research to learn about how immigrants legally enter the United States today. How are the experiences of today s immigrants similar to and different form those of the immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island (or Angel Island) in the late 1800s to early 1900s? FEATURE ARTICLES WRITER Compose a feature article ( words) for a leading newspaper of the early 1900s. [Include pictures to be shown as you give your report. (Time frame )] ARTIST WORKING FOR ARCHITECT DIGEST (A RENOW NED MAGAZINE IN YOUR CITY) (10 points) New technology that developed in the 1880s changed the landscape of cities.
