1 , AmeriCorps Tamiu Adelante! National DAY of Service and Remembrance The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. This is what our founding fathers had in mind when creating this country, Freedom! People have died defending with honor the freedom this country has. So how can we repay those people who have sacrificed their lives to defend the land we live in today? This National Day of Service and Remembrance AmeriCorps members from Laredo organized a drive to collect items like granola bars, hard candy, beef jerky, hand sanitizer and other items the soldiers are in need to create care packages and encouraged children to write Thank You letters to send TAMIU-Adelante to our troops (AmeriCorps) currently serving in Kuwait. This Issue National day of Service & Remembrance Service projects (p. 1-4) Upcoming events/reminders (P. 5) Birthdays for the Month (p. 5) 1
2 Eagle Pass Del Rio ` For National Day of Service and Remembrance the Eagle Pass members passed out the card fliers and talked to various people about the anniversary of 9/11. In Del Rio, Jason and Sabrina went to their local mall and distributed these beautiful cards in remembrance of September 11th. Many people were very pleased with this project and some employees from the stores would say, We should have done something like this here. Almost every time, after distributing a 9/11 card, they could hear the people begin to talk about the incident and what they remembered. 2
3 Hebbronville Crystal City In remembrance of September 11th the AmeriCorps members, Cecilia Ramirez and Belinda Gonzalez, situated at one of the local stores, Bryans Stop and Shop, and spent their time passing out the cards and talking to the community about 9/11. This was a great way to see if they remembered where they were on that day. Many spoke and said that it brought them and their neighbors closer than ever before. The small gesture helped the members get to know the community a little more that day. It was awesome to hear them speak about how it had changed them. As an AmeriCorps member from Crystal City Ms. Dona Wittman, on Sunday, September 11, 2011, gave out remembrance cards of the 9/11 tragedy to some of the local residents. Her first stop was at a police station where she handed out cards to several people, including the deputies on duty. Since it was Sunday, she went to several stores and restaurants where the rest of the cards were handed out. Everyone who received the card had a good word to say, were pleased with the cards and what they stood for. 3
4 CARRIZO SPRINGS On September 11, 2011, Ms. Sarah Ramirez distributed to her community 9/11 A Day to Remember cards with a red ribbon on the side. These cards were offered at the Dimmit Regional Hospital. Zapata The AmeriCorps members from Zapata proudly saluted and waved their flags as they played the song Proud to be an American, at their local Super S Foods Store on 9/11. They had the opportunity to meet with many people within their community. The members distributed the NDSR cards and spoke to the residents on the importance of 9/11. They acknowledged all those soldiers that have fought and are fighting for our country, in which we should be thankful for their courage and unselfishness. 4
