2 McDougal Littell World History: Ancient Civilizations and World History: Medieval and Early Modern Times correlated to the Ohio s Academic Content Standards for Social Studies Grades 6 8 Benchmarks Grade-Level Description The sixth grade year focuses on the study of regions to build an understanding of how the world is organized spatially before students begin the four-year historical sequence in grades seven through ten. Students study some of the earliest people to live in each region in order to understand how humans adapted to the environmental conditions there. The focus is geographic rather than historic. The study should include the regions of Latin America, Europe, East Asia, Australia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa. At least one contemporary country in each region should be chosen as a case study. 6 8 Benchmarks HISTORY Students use materials drawn from the diversity of human experience to analyze and interpret significant events, patterns and themes in the history of Ohio, the United States and the world.
