1 Conference One Crisis, many Perspectives: Understanding the Politics of the Eurozone Crisis January 2018 Senatszimmer (KOL-E-13, Main Buildung) University of Zurich Preliminary program Conference Organizer: (University of Zurich) The Eurozone crisis has been one of the biggest challenges for the European Union in the last decade. It has caused a huge economic fallout in many countries, has led to political conflicts between and within countries, and has facilitated the rise of left-wing and right-wing populists across Europe. Against this backdrop, several research projects are currently underway that attempt to provide a better understanding of the crisis. Yet each of these projects focuses only on specific aspects of the crisis, zooming in on concrete questions. While the insights generated by these projects add greatly to our understanding of the politics of the Eurozone crisis, a fuller understanding requires taking a broader view that spans levels of analysis and approaches. This workshop aims to generate such a view by bringing five separate large-scale research projects on different aspects of the politics of the Eurozone crisis together. These projects, funded by major research agencies such as the ERC, the SNSF, or the DFG, each cover different aspects of the crisis, such as intergovernmental bargaining, the role of the IMF, the distributive politics underlying the crisis, the role of ideas, and the consequences of the crisis for political behavior. By bringing these projects together and sharing the insights generated by each of them, the workshop aims at widening our understanding of the crisis. Each project will be introduced with a short presentation of the project PI/PIs, followed by one to three papers that emerged from each project. This allows participants to not only learn about the overall framework of each project, but also to engage in more detailed discussions about its output. The project will be open for interested members of the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS).
