EU Students Thoughts and Insights on Studying in the UK Paul Raybould -Marketing Director, QS Enrolment Solutions
Before we begin is now
Questions to answer 1. How do EU and non-eu students attitudes to Brexit differ? 2. In what ways is the UK seen as less attractive? 3. What are EU students saying about Brexit? 4. Can we influence perceptions of the UK? 5. Is EU TNE a possible solution to some Brexit concerns? 6. In which EU cities would students want UK branch campuses to be? 7. Which EU countries are most deterred by Brexit? 8. Summary
About the International Student Survey (ISS) The world s largest survey of pre-enrolled international and EU students Formerly owned by Hobsons, now owned by QS Enrolment Solutions 67,000 responses for the 2018 survey 63 universities took part - from Netherlands, Italy, Australia and UK Pre-request the 2018 ISS report at (released 10 May 2018)
How do EU and non-eu students opinions differ? How has Brexit affected your interest in studying in the UK? 36% 52% 67% 4% 10% 13% More interested Less interested No difference EU Non-EU
In what ways is the UK less attractive? 57% Why do you feel the UK is a less attractive study destination as a result of Brexit? 54% 55% 54% 36% 46% 31% 43% 38% 46% 35% 24% 13% 17% Less financially viable Less welcoming Harder to work post-graduation UK will be weaker Rather study in EU Harder to get a visa Reduce quality Non-EU EU
Has the UK's decision to leave the European Union (Brexit) changed your opinion of the United Kingdom? I do not know if universities will be consistent and will maintain the UE students fees the same or if they will be fall in temptation of charge massive fees. A little bit, because I do not know how all conditions for EU students will be changed in the future. I have some concerns about costs, funding of study and about future access to find job after been graduated. As long as i find a way to reduce the cost i couldn't care less. No, not at all.
Can we influence perceptions of the UK? Do campaigns like #WeAreInternational and #LondonIsOpen persuade you that the UK is welcoming to international students? No, 25% Fully persuade, 26% For the latest 2018 stats, pre-request the 2018 ISS report at Slightly persuade, 49% 75% EU students claim #WeAreInternational and #LondonIsOpen campaigns help persuade them the UK is welcoming (compared to 79% for international students)
Is EU TNE a solution to Brexit concerns? (EU students only) If a UK university opened an EU branch campus, how likely are you to study there? Very / somewhat likely: 76% 58% Very likely, 23% Very likely, 28% Somewhat likely, 53% Somewhat likely, 30% For the latest 2018 stats, pre-request the 2018 ISS report at Not likely, 16% Not likely, 36% NOT in home country In home country
2017 results - In which city would students want an EU branch campus to be located?
2018 results - In which city would students want an EU branch campus to be located?
General feedback from EU students about the UK opening EU branch campuses As I am a European student, I certainly would find less difficult to live, study, travel across Europe than obtaining a visa for the UK. The institution will bring its expertise, skills and culture and blend with the host country's skills, experience and culture to come up with a much better product. Because I know a UK has high standards when it comes to education and I like international environment. Opening a UK university in an EU country would mean high quality education and international class, two attributes which speak to me greatly. Less competition for international students and affordable fees.
General feedback from EU students about the UK opening EU branch campuses Because I want to study in the UK and not anywhere else. My home country Malta already has overseas campuses operated by British universities. They are essentially Maltese run with a British university named on the degree, which is not the experience I want. I wouldn't trust a University that opens "branches" as if it was an industry. A University needs to have all its resources concentrated. For me opening a "branch" sounds like they want to make money, not to provide high quality education.
2017 EU countries most negatively affected by Brexit (net affect) Has the UK s decision to leave the EU affected your interest in studying in the UK? Net impact Portugal 6% 60% 29% 6% -23% Germany 60% 35% 4% -34% Greece 5% 57% 31% 8% -26% France 7% 48% 34% 11% -27% Spain 3% 52% 40% 5% -37% Italy 5% 49% 44% 2% -39% Bulgaria 5% 43% 46% 5% -41% More interested No difference Less interested Don't know
Summary Negative attitudes towards to Brexit are growing again after having softened in 2017 possibly a symptom of students in the latest ISS spanning intakes pre and post the UK leaving EU date Financial viability, the UK being less welcoming and postgraduate work opportunities are the main areas students are worried about post-brexit Campaigns like #WeAreInternational do help persuade prospective students that the UK is welcoming The majority of EU students say they would be likely to study at an EU branch campus of a UK university post-brexit, but ideally not in their home country Amsterdam has overtaken Paris to become the preferred EU city for a UK university s EU branch campus Bulgaria, Italy and Spain seem most deterred by Brexit (2018 figures to be published 10 May 2018)
