2 The Victorian Democrat, August 2018 Page 2 Candidates' Statements Nomination for President CLIVE JACKSON This year I initiated the forming of a Campaign Team for the coming State election. This group has met and is developing a Platform of issues to brief candidates when endorsed. I would like to encourage all members to be active as we near the election in November, and respond to, or approach people, with our Call for Candidates. I am committed to growing our numbers prior to the coming State election, so assembled a Membership Drive Kit to help all members to recruit someone. This is being followed up by phone contact. Last year, I launched an Unclaimed Monies Project, which has successfully seen most of the remaining account monies of old Branches transferred to the Division. I submit my nomination for State President for this financial year. It has been a privilege to serve in the role during the party s 40 th anniversary in The Victorian Division played the leading role in celebrating the 40 th and benefitted by reconnecting with former staff, leaders and members, and media opportunities that it created. Every member and supporter was mailed a commemorative badge before the end of My recent experience includes being a lead candidate for the party in the November 2014 State election, contesting for the upper house Southern Metropolitan Region in a team with fellow candidate Richard Grummet. I first joined the party in 1985, where I was active in Higgins Branch, serving several terms as Branch President, and endorsed as the Branch s candidate for the Federal elections in 1987, 1990 and I discontinued my involvement in 1995 for family reasons. Prior to re-joining the party, I acted as honorary media and campaign advisor to the State Executive for the 2013 Federal election, primarily assisting lead candidate David Collyer. David came close to being elected as a Senator HOW TO VOTE Complete the Ballot Paper Voting closes at 5pm on Friday, September 7, No voting paper can be accepted after this time, regardless of the reason. Eligibility: Only full members of at least six months duration, whose membership is current (unfinancial for no more than three months), are eligible to vote. Before posting your ballot paper 1. Clearly print your full name and address on the back of an envelope, and then sign it. 2. If two voting members of a household are sharing the one envelope, there must be two names and signatures on the back of the envelope. 3. Place your voting paper inside the envelope and seal it. For privacy, if you wish, you may place this envelope inside a second envelope before posting. 3 The Victorian Democrat, August 2018 Page 3 DEPUTY PRESIDENT (2 to be elected) ROBERT LIVESAY Dear Member I nominate for Deputy President of the Victorian Division and a position on the State Executive. I am married to Joetta and we have three adult and two minor children. I am a mechanical fitter by trade and have considerable experience in the community on local, State national and international issues of social justice and environmental concern and am actively involved in the Keilor Park Sports Club supporting juniors and volunteering in men's and women's events. I am active in the AMWU and a member of St George's Anglican Church Flemington Victoria, and Hope of Praise church, Monrovia, Liberia, which established a girls' school. My wife Joetta is actively involved as a community volunteer in aged and disability care, and community meals I have been actively involved in the Party for over 20 years as a state and Federal candidate and a supporter of Democrats standing in local, State and Federal elections. I am committed to getting into- and running local, State and federal Government as the party of reason, economic responsibility, environmental sustainability and social justice.

4 The Victorian Democrat, August 2018 Page 4 ROBERT McKEE I wish to nominate for the position of Deputy President for the year. I am currently one of two Deputy Presidents. I have been a member of the party for about eight years, and was a member of the state executive for several years before being elected to the role of Deputy President last year, and being appointed secretary by the executive. As such I have organised the monthly executive meetings and the visit by the National President. I feel strongly that a change from the major parties is required to ensure the best possible governance of our state and country, and that the objectives and principles of the Australian Democrats are the best of any party currently available. To this end I am prepared to put in the work required to secure representation in both state and federal parliaments. I have qualifications in primary teaching and law, have worked in both fields in the past and am currently employed in public transport. I am passionate about reforming all of these areas which are all essential in the functioning of our state. I enjoy cycling and walking and am a member of the Pakenham Bushwalking Club.

See candidate statement above. DEBORAH JACKSON I look forward to serving the Party again and look forward to its growing involvement in politics in the near future. JULIA KING My name is Julia King. I am currently a member of the Victorian State Executive and nominate myself to remain in that role. I am currently Acting Membership Officer for the Victorian Branch. I also nominate to remain in that Acting Role. I have been a member of the Australian Democrats for about 20 years. As people become increasingly disillusioned with the two major parties, I continue to believe that Australia needs a third Party in the Senate which is able to take a wider, more holistic view across a wide range of issues, and argue strongly for all the people of Australia. Aspects of our very democracy are under attack including freedom of speech and our obligations under United Nations Treaties. Now, more than ever, we need a strong courageous voice in Parliament. BRIAN MITCHELL I submit my nomination to be a member of the State Executive for this financial year. I have been a member of the State Executive in the last financial year, and would like to continue in this role. I was an active participant in the Australian Democrats Party in the late 1980 s/early 90 s, helping at election campaigns, organising events, and being a Campaign Manager. In 1995, I had to discontinue my involvement in the Party due to family reasons. Since joining again several years ago, I have found the Party active and involved, with pertinent commitment, and a Party that listens. I am a mathematician and work as a Curriculum Fellow and Lecturer. I have a BA (Double Hons), PhD, AMusA, Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, and am a MAustMS. I am a member of the National Trust, Membership Secretary of the Friends of the Team of Pianists, and play piano in my spare time in charity concerts that I direct. I nominate for one of the five executive positions in the upcoming 2018 Victorian Democrats elections. Married to Judy, we live and work in Albury/Wodonga running an IT consultancy business. We have 2 adult children and have both been financial members of the Democrats for the last few years. I nominated, as a Councilor for Wodonga City Council in 2016 as I consider myself a community minded person however, was not successful. I have served on a number of local community and sporting committees as well as zone/state executives for the association of Apex clubs and a

6 The Victorian Democrat, August 2018 Page 6 member of the Rotary club of Wodonga for a number of years. Supported the Cathy McGowan campaigns in 2012 and 2016 through making available all IT equipment and support for campaign office as well as assisting cold calling and Election Day voting booth co-ordination/scrutineering. I am passionate about getting the Democrats back to where they can play a part in guiding Australian politics back from the edge of the abyss. To achieve this requires work. The Democrats desperately need a dramatic increase in membership, which will also lead to better finances. I look forward to working as a team member IAN URQUHART I, Ian Alistair Urquhart, nominate for a position on the State Executive of the Victorian Division of the State Executive. I am nominating to ensure that a quorum will be available at the Victorian Executive meetings. My main interest is in ensuring that we obtain sufficient numbers of members for re-registration both with the AEC and the VEC. As Victorian Treasurer for about 8 years and National Treasurer for 5 years and a member for about 30 years I have a long history with the Party.
