2 We are divided as a nation politically, socially, culturally. But museums are one place where Americans can come together to learn, to think, to enjoy, to see ourselves reflected, to understand others who are different, and to heal. Museums have a significant role to play in igniting dialogue and change in our communities through dynamic programs, collections, and exhibitions the sky s the limit. Whether you are an emerging professional or a seasoned veteran, the MAAM Conference is the place to find the most up-to-date information to make your museum thrive. Join us in Baltimore, Charm City: the place for fun, food and great museums for the 2018 Annual Meeting. Our sessions will spark your creativity and offer practical solutions and workable models for making museums really matter in their communities. 3 1. Conference Themes and Session Ideas Below are some session ideas related to our conference themes. You may certainly choose to submit a proposal on a different topic. Check as many as apply to your proposal. Check all that apply. Museums speaking up/advocating in their communities Communicating the intangibles: telling the media what people don t know about what we do as a museum in our community Fundraising and grants in a time of uncertainty Developing beneficial partnerships (i.e. between associations, funders, corporate partners) Tying in public programs to the museum s permanent collection Diversity and Inclusion, how to reach out to our under-served communities The role of informal science education in museums/zoos/aquaria and how it plays a role in the community Developing programs and exhibitions related and in response to political and social justice issues Developing programs on racial and ethnic experiences beyond typical or stereotypical interpretations Work/Life Balance as a new museum professional Marketing, PR, and engagement to and with new and diverse audiences Communicating the importance of museums to the public Developing advocacy tools to lobby with your local, state, and federal representatives to protect museums how to talk to your senator/representative Collecting the Contemporary Experience Engaging the retired museum community Other: 3 of 10 3/26/18 12:39 PM
4 2. Submitting Proposals The annual meeting is the perfect opportunity to introduce theoretical or philosophical frameworks that explore daily issues shared by all. Sessions should present differing perspectives that constructively enliven the session, and reflect the conference theme. Vendors are also welcome to submit proposals, but all panels must include at least one museum professional. At least one person on the panel must be a member of MAAM or must become a member of MAAM either at the individual or the institutional level before the preliminary program is released. Mark only one oval. All session proposals are due by 5 PM April 10, 2018 and will be reviewed by the MAAM Conference Program Committee. All sessions are 75 minutes. Only complete submissions will be reviewed. Decisions regarding the selection of sessions will be ed to the session chair by June 4, 2018 At least one person on the panel must be a member of MAAM or must become a member of MAAM either at the individual or the institutional level before the preliminary program is released. //midatlanticmuseums.org/membership/membership-levels/ Please save electronic proposals in PDF format as well as submitting through the Google Form provided. Please confirm that all of the proposed speakers are available for the Annual Meeting dates before submitting a proposal. All speakers are expected to register at the conference discounted speaker rate that will be publicized in June MAAM cannot provide any financial reimbursement or assistance to speakers who wish to be compensated for travel or hotel expenses. Session Selection Process Session Selection Process: The Annual Meeting Program Committee consists of representatives from the MAAM board of directors, an emerging museum professional, and a representative from our local arrangements committee. The Program Committee will review session submissions during April and May After developing the schedule for the conference, we will notify contact persons for selected sessions on or about June 4, The Program Committee reserves the right to request modifications to the submitted programs. 5 6. Session Title * Session Titles will also be used to market attendees 7. Session Description * in 100 words, describe the theme of the session and outcomes expected 8. Number of Speakers * No session should include more than a moderator/session chair and three participants/speakers. The only exception to the recommended number is for a performance or round table. Session format should be in whatever style best engage the audience and promote maximum interaction. Mark only one oval. ALL panelists are expected to register for the MAAM annual meeting at the discounted presenter rate. Please include the following information the session chair and each speaker/presenter: Name, Title, Institution, City, State, Phone Number, Cell Phone Number and address Session Chair SESSION CHAIR: as the point of contact for MAAM s conference planners, receives all communications, and is expected to communicate all pertinent annual meeting information to session panelists. If your session is then selected, Program Committee members will then work with you to help identify potential participants. 14. Additional Information All conference sessions will occur on either Thursday, October 18, 2018 or Friday, October 19, 2018 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Inner Harbor & The Grand in Baltimore, MD. Please briefly note any additional relevant information you wish to convey to assist the Program Committee in its decision making process. (E.G. You can only present on one specific date of the conference). Please note that at least one recognized museum professional must be represented in each session proposal. Please be prepared to bring your own laptop to the conference. All panelists are expected to register for the MAAM Annual Meeting; there is a discounted presenter rate.
