3 COMMISSION ON AGING Created - Purpose - Membership - Terms - Meetings - Staff - Montgomery County Code Section Be concerned with educational, health and welfare, employment, recreation and social issues, housing, legislation and other programs and projects that relate to the aging; advocate for local, state and federal programs or services that can benefit the elderly. No less than 18. Members must be county residents; a majority shall be senior citizens. Three incumbents are eligible to apply for reappointment. Applicants must be County residents. Seniors and non-seniors are encouraged to apply; please indicate the position for which you are applying. Also, applicants who may have knowledge of or expertise in communications, transportation and housing are encouraged to apply. For purposes of the Commission on Aging, "senior" is defined as age 60 or older. Serving as an advocate on behalf of older persons in the County, the Commission advises the County Executive, the County Council and various Montgomery County Departments on the concerns and needs of seniors. Members serve three-year terms without compensation, but are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for meetings attended. Meetings are held the fourth Thursday of each month at the White Oak Center, 1700 April Lane, in Silver Spring, in the Social Hall, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Commission members are expected to serve on a committee of the Commission as well. Each committee meets once a month, during the day. Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, gender, geography, disability and ethnicity are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Leggett's appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications of those selected for appointment are made public as part of the confirmation process.
