1 The Keystoner February 2013 Volume 81, Number 1 Serving AAUW Branches Throughout Pennsylvania Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Leader Log Margaret McGrath, AAUW-PA President aauwpa.president@gmail.com Hope to See YOU on April 13 in State College! In this Keystoner, you ll see lots of preparation for the state annual meeting. You will also note that the state board has approved a mail-in vote for new state officers for those state members unable to attend the annual meeting. So why come in April? Your state board has a vision that AAUW in Pennsylvania will be a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive community, and that the state organization will be a resource and advocate for the branches. We re hoping you want to be an active part of this community, whether you re passionate about equity, public policy, scholarships for students, or education. Are you ready to discuss Caleb s Crossing or Enrique s Journey, or do you just want to spend time with other like-minded women? While we know that you can be active online and elsewhere, there is an energy generated by congregating, brainstorming and discussing. The state board will also be listening to member ideas and passions. Do we need to make changes in our resolutions on Marcellus Shale or Human Trafficking? Should we join coalitions against gun violence? Will you vote to give the board flexibility to decide how long the annual meeting will be each year rather than designating that in even-numbered years it will be held during a State convention? Do you agree with our goals, and have any additional priority actions to suggest? What else is on your mind? It isn t work if it s fun, and if you re not sure the intellectual stimulation does that for you, we ll also have massage, yoga and a musical interlude, for a little variety. I hope to see you there. AAUW-PA Annual Meeting Saturday, April 13th Toftrees Resort, State College Empowering Women The theme of the 2013 annual meeting is empowerment, and the keynote speaker for the Saturday session will be Christianne Corbett, AAUW Senior Researcher and Co-author of the newly released report, Graduating to a Pay Gap. This report explores the earnings difference between female and male college graduates who are working full- time one year after graduation. (See pages 5-9 for complete Annual Meeting information.) A New Legislative Tracking Tool Keynote Speaker Christianne Corbett Are you tired of legislators in Harrisburg pushing bills that would limit a woman s right to health care, weaken our educational system, or reduce access to higher education? Do you wish you knew about these threats to AAUW priority issues sooner? AAUW- PA now has a state-of-the-art legislative tracking tool to help us take effective and timely action on policy issues in our state. Called CQ (Congressional Quarterly) StateTrack, the tool allows the AAUW staff in Washington, D.C. to work with AAUW-PA public policy co-chairs to track state legislation that affects AAUW's priority issues. We will use CQ StateTrack to create a profile for Pennsylvania, which includes a set of keywords, names of committees, and names of legislators. The tool will automatically search state bills, generating alerts when state legislation containing one of our keywords is introduced, is heard in committee, or is ready for a floor vote. The search engine can also generate web reports to give us a snapshot of what the state legislature is considering at any one time, based on our state s keywords and key issues. (see CQ STATE TRACK, page 2)

My hope was to bring back new leadership skills to Moravian College. Attendees were from various backgrounds with differing beliefs and values, but we all had a similar goal of creating a more equal world for women. Our plan: to inspire each other to become incredible female leaders. Arielle Brent, 2012 NCCWSL Recipient, Moravian College The most moving event was the Women of Distinction awards ceremony. Recipients achievements have been world changing. Each spoke about how we can make our own footprints and use our education and privilege to fix the world. I felt touched and motivated to start making a difference. I wanted a renewed sense of purpose and to evaluate how my values correlated with my career goals. I learned that other women my age share my struggles and we now had new tools to overcome them. Presenters spoke about the importance of young leaders to make connections and foster relationships with women we admire and how to foster relationships with those who look up to us. We can create a team of young women seeking the same goals. Networking was a major activity and hearing so many different perspectives made me reevaluate how I have always thought about discrimination, policy reform, and feminism. I realized that those in support of women s rights have a myriad of opinions regarding the actions women are taking currently to achieve those rights. By meeting women from other states and educational backgrounds, attendees were able to share opinions and reaffirm their own values and get others, like me, to understand I still have so much to learn. Arielle Brent (CQ STATE TRACK from page 1) With this new service, AAUW-PA will be one of the first advocacy organizations in our state to know about pending legislation. Our site will become a go-to place for up-to-date information on legislation affecting women and families in Pennsylvania. We will be able to make quick decisions about taking positions on new bills and taking a leadership role on particular legislation. Updated information will be available on the AAUW-PA website. To learn more about CQ StateTrack, or to put a link to CQ StateTrack in your branch newsletter, visit advocacy@aauw.org. Remembering Doris Cohen Doris Cohen, Finance Officer of the AAUW-PA from , passed away on January 13, Doris joined AAUW-York in She was active in numerous interest groups and served as branch treasurer from and as branch co-president from Doris will be remembered for her strong support of AAUW issues and for her dry sense of humor. She is survived by three daughters and one son.

3 Volume 81, Number 1 Page 3 April 9 is Equal Pay Day Betty Hooker, AAUW-PA Public Policy Co-Chair aauwpapp2@gmail.com Equal Pay Day is the date when women s earnings "catch up" to men's from the previous year. In other words, women must work fifteen months and nine days to earn what men in equivalent positions earn in one year. The AAUW Pay Equity Resource Kit, updated in November 2012, is available from the Association. It offers information on the history of pay discrimination and many ideas for action on this important issue. Learn more at: AAUWPayEquityResourceKit2013.pdf We will be very fortunate for the chance to hear more about Graduating to a Pay Gap from Christianne Corbett, author of the report, at our annual meeting in April. Released by AAUW in October 2012, the report uses current data to examine the gender wage gap between women and men one year after college graduation. Controlling for many variables, the study found that one year out of college, women were paid 82 cents, on average, for every dollar paid to men. A PowerPoint summary of Graduating to a Pay Gap is available at The PowerPoint, followed by a discussion, is perfect for a branch meeting. Closing the pay gap through the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act is a top legislative priority for AAUW in the 113th Congress. The Paycheck Fairness Act will close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and will bar retaliation against workers who reveal their wages to co-workers. Without this bill, employers can discipline and even terminate workers who divulge their salaries. Without knowledge of the "going wage," employees are prevented from learning about pay discrimination, and full enforcement of existing anti-discrimination laws is impossible. Women will not get the pay they deserve until they know what men doing the same job are paid. 4 The Keystoner Page 4 Around the State AAUW-PA Branch Bits and Pieces CENTRAL DISTRICT Carol Heintzelman, District Coordinator AAUWPACDCPA@gmail.com Gettysburg On Tuesday, March 19, the Gettysburg Branch will host The Case Against Marcellus Shale, presented by Barbara Roney and Deb McFeely from the AAUW York Branch. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Lutheran Theological Seminary. Join us and learn more about this critical issue! Ruthe Craley Huntingdon On March 27, the AAUW-Juniata College Student Group and Huntingdon Branch will co-sponsor their second joint Sister-to-Sister Summit. Sixty seventh- and eighth-grade girls from three school districts will choose and then discuss in small groups nonacademic challenges they face and how to address them. Past topics included friendship, bullying and peer pressure, relationships and dating, and self-image. C/U partner Juniata College is providing meeting space and staff to train the college-student moderators for the chat sessions. Motivational speakers will be former girls from the program who have successfully navigated the murky waters of middle school. The project won Standing Stone Coffee Company s Community Development Award. Deb Roney EASTERN DISTRICT Susan McNamara, District Coordinator aauwpaeast@gmail.com Makefield Area On November 17, the Makefield Area Branch hosted a very well attended meeting for eastern Pennsylvania AAUW branches, including sixty women from thirteen AAUW branches, and some League of Women Voters members. Lisa Maatz, national AAUW Director of Public Policy and Government Relations, spoke about women in the last election, non-partisanship, and regulatory reform during legislative gridlock. Amanda Holt shared an update on her PA redistricting challenge. It was an inspiring day. Susan McNamara West Chester-Chester County We created a card game for use at the first meeting of the year that helps us get to know more about each other and about branch activities. We made up cards that had the name and brief description of a branch activity, and the page number in the branch handbook where a description of that activity was located. After dealing the cards, members tell something about themselves and share the information from the card (s) they were dealt. The activity chair circulates a sign-up sheet for those interested in participating. This game familiarizes members with each other and with the handbook. Fran Pierce WESTERN DISTRICT Barb Zaborowski, District Coordinator aauwpawest@gmail.com Johnstown Celebrating our 90th anniversary this year, we ve planned special events throughout the year. We will show the movie The Invisible War during Women s History Month, birthday cake and a historical look at the past 90 years at our awards dinner this spring, and in the fall we plan to invite all of the women s groups in the county to our anniversary party. Barb Zaborowski Pittsburgh, Beaver Valley, Fox Chapel January was designated Human Trafficking Awareness Month by President Obama, and to promote awareness of this problem, three branches from the Western District (Pittsburgh, Fox Chapel, and Beaver Valley) attended a program given by Jamie Turek, M.I.D, who is currently the Assistant Director of the Project to End Human Trafficking (PEHT) in Pittsburgh. Jamie spoke about what human trafficking is, who is trafficked, reasons why victims might be trafficked, and shared stories about human trafficking at the global and local levels. It was a real eye opener. To learn more, visit about/our-pittsburgh-staff. Patricia Byerly

10 (VOTING from page 7) copies of this ballot, biographies of the nominees, and the instructions for voting. Those ballots may also be mailed back to AAUW-PA as described in the instructions, or may be given to the branch president or other person designated by the branch. That branch designee may mail the ballots, in bulk, back to AAUW-PA, or may choose to handcarry the ballots, in bulk, to the April Annual Meeting in State College. The Board of Directors hopes that the procedure will work well this year, but if there are any issues that arise during the voting or counting process that were not anticipated, we are confident that the elected members of the Nominations and Elections Committee and the Bylaws Chair will be able to make the necessary corrections and improve the process as we go forward in future years. The following pieces of upcoming legislation, as identified by Erin Prangley, AAUW Associate Director of Government Relations, align with AAUW priorities: Upcoming Legislation Includes AAUW Priorities ESEA Elementary and Secondary Education Act - "No Child Left Behind." Most states have applied for waivers for NCLB so they can continue to receive funding. The administration is setting its own policy on such issues as Title IX enforcement, STEM education, teacher quality, and more. The Senate Health Committee may pass its own version of ESEA. Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act - (Federal Student Aid) and reauthorization of the Perkins Act, but the Perkins Act is it doesn't collect data students in non-traditional careers. Violence Against Women Act - provides grants to states to set up shelters, train police departments, etc. This legislation has never applied to Native American women living on reservations. Jurisdiction is the issue. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - formerly Food Stamps - The House cuts are draconian. AAUW is working with coalitions to oppose cuts to SNAP. Shaheen Amendment - would give victims of rape or incest in the military access to abortion services using their military health insurance coverage. (Rape is three times higher in the military.) It is not included in the National Defense Authorization Bill passed by the House. Reaching AAUW AUW Member HELPLINE: 800/ (AAUW) 202/ (TDD number) AAUW connect@aauw.org (BYLAWS from page 8) Rationale: At one time, AAUW- PA used to hold a convention every year. That changed to a format of a convention only in even-numbered years, and a one day meeting in odd-numbered years which is when National holds a convention. The state board has been exploring blended options, and would like the flexibility to determine the scheduling as they think appropriate, rather than meet the test of a convention in even-numbered years.
