Reading list for Bio THIRD EDITION VERSION Spring 2013 Note: All readings listed below are from the third edition of Scott Freeman's Biological Science. The official textbook for the Spring 2013 semester of Bio 185 is the 4 th edition of the book. While the vast majority of the content is the same between the 3 rd and 4 th editions of the book, I will base exam writing on information contained in the 4 th edition. I'm providing this list of readings and end-of-chapter questions to help focus your study time outside of class. You are not expected to turn in answers to the questions listed here; use them as a tool to help test your understanding of the material and to help you focus when preparing for class meetings and exams. Note that this is just a general guide to readings; I have probably not listed every single useful page of the book, and areas of the book not listed herein may contain information relevant to the exams. Abbreviations: TYK = Test Your Knowledge; TYU = Test Your Understanding; ACNS = Applying Concepts to New Situations Introduction, life's domains Chapter 1, section 3: Overview of diversity TYU 2; ACNS 2 Chapter 28, pages : Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya Evolution Chapter 1, section 2: Quick summary of evolution TYK 3-5; TYU 4-6; Chapter 24. Focus on sections 3 & 5, though 2 has good background and 4 discusses two excellent examples (similar to ones I might use on an exam). TYK 1, 3-6; TYU 2 & 6; ACNS: 2-4 Chapter 25, section 2 provides additional information that should help understand selection, and section 3 covers genetic drift and founder events (though we don't need to know how to calculate/interpret allele frequencies). TYK 2 Chapter 26. Focus on sections 1 & 2, though 3 & 4 will help. TYK: 3, 6; TYU: 3 Chapter 27, section 1 should be helpful for the phylogeny lab (as well as lecture if you're having trouble understanding phylogenies) 1
Habitat diversity Chapter 50: section 2 (aquatic) and section 3 (terrestrial); section 4 has information on rain shadows TYK 1-4; TYU 4 & 5; ACNS 3 Chapter 53: sections 1 and 3; sections 2 and 4 are optional, but may help with the integration of the chapter s content. TYK 1-4; TYU 1, 4, & 5; ACNS 1, 3 Introduction to life's kingdoms This unit is the most frustrating in terms of reading, as no single chapter of the book succinctly covers what we're going over in lecture. Instead, the information is spread out amongst many chapters, from which you'll need to pick and choose information; I apologize for this. Use the level of detail I've introduced in lecture to guide your reading, as these chapters go into much more depth than you'll be expected to know at this point in the course for lecture. I ll be providing a separate handout to help guide your reading in this section. Also note that these chapters cover much of the same material that we ll be going over in lab, so it may help to refer back to these chapters when do each kingdom s diversity lab(s). In general, section 1 of chapters provides an overview of the biology of each lineage. While you won't be tested on the details of most of what's in section 1 of each chapter, it makes for interesting reading, and much of it is relevant to what we're discussing. Section 4 (or whatever sections cover key lineages ) of each chapter introduces details on the major lineages of each kingdom. You are not expected to memorize every detail of every lineage listed in section 4 of each chapter; focus primarily on the lineages we've discussed in lecture. Chapter 27, while entirely optional, can provide a good historical perspective. See, for example, the figure on pages Chapter 28: Bacteria and Archaea, sections 2 & 4; section 3 (pages ) has some material we'll cover briefly TYK 5; TYU 6; ACNS 3 Chapter 29: Protists, section 4 (sections 2 & 3 will help with lab) TYK 1; TYU 4 & 5; ACNS 4 Chapter 30: Green plants, sections 2 & 4 (section 3 will help with lab, and other units in the course) 2
TYK 3; TYU 5; ACNS 3 & 4 Chapter 31: Fungi, section 2 (up to page 670), section 3 (up to page 675), and section 4 (the rest of sections 2 and 3 will likely help with lab and other units in the course) TYK 3; ACNS 4 Chapter 32: Introduction to animals, table 32.1, sections 2 & 4 (section 3 has information that will help with lab; section 2 goes into more detail than we need to know at this point; e.g., ignore most of the discussion on coeloms and protostome/deuterostome development) TYK 6; TYU 1; ACNS 3 (focus on how you'd determine what phylum the animal goes in) Chapter 33: Protostome animals, sections 1, 3, & 4 (section 2 has some information that will help with lab) TYU 1; ACNS 2 Chapter 34: Deuterostome animals, section 1. Sections 4 & 5 go into many of the sub-lineages of vertebrates and echinoderms; this will help some with the animal diversity lab, but we don't need to know it now in lecture. Section 2 also has some information that will help with lab. Section 6 is entirely optional, but has information on human evolution, if you're interested in the topic. TYU 1 & 2; ACNS 1 Virology Chapter 35: Viruses, read the introduction (i.e, the part before section 1), section 2, and section 3 (up to page 783) TYK 2, 3, 4 & 6; TYU 1, 4 Chapter 49: The Immune System in Animals, read the introduction, section 2 (don t worry about the section The discovery of gene recombination on page ), section 3 (which is a key section for items we ll talk about), and section 4. TYK: 3, 6; TYU 3, 4; ACNS 4 Metabolism Chapter 28: Bacterial metabolism, section 3's portion on Metabolic Diversity (pages ) TYK 1 & 4; TYU 1, 2, 4, & 5; ACNS 4 Chapter 41: Metabolic rates in animals, section 3 (this can also help with lab) Chapter 9: Review of basic Eukaryote metabolism, sections 1, 2, & 7 (rest is 3
optional, assuming you remember Bio 181) TYK 2, 4-6; TYU 2-6; ACNS 3 & 4 Photosynthesis and autotrophism Chapter 10: Eukaryote photosynthesis, sections 1, 2, 3, and 4. TYK 2-4; TYU 1-6; ACNS 3 & 4 Chapter 28: Bacterial photosynthesis, section 3's portion on Photosynthesis TYK 2 & 3 Biogeochemistry This topic is an application of the metabolism and photosynthesis units, and does not primarily draw on content in the textbook. However, the following section may help: Chapter 54: Biogeochemical cycles, section 2 Digestion and nutrient absorption Chapter 43: Animal digestion, section 3; section 1 pages for different types of nutrients TYK 4 & 5; TYU 2 & 5; ACNS 2 & 4 Chapter 37: Root absorption, section 2 through page 820 Chapter 37: Translocation (movement of sugars through phloem), section 4 and box 37.3 TYK 5 & 6; TYU 4 & 5; ACNS 4 Chapter 38: Plant nutrient absorption, sections 1, 3, and 4 (section 2 provides good context, but is not required) TYK 1 & 3; TYU 2 & 4 (ignoring negative membrane potential), 5, & 6 Respiration and gas exchange Chapter 44: Animal respiration, sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 (skim the Bohr effect) TYK 1, 3, & 4; TYU 1 (focusing on respiratory), 3-5; ACNS 1-4 Chapter 36: Discussion of stomata and trichomes, section 2, pages TYU 4 Chapter 37: Section 3's discussion of techniques for limiting water loss in plants 4
Chapter 30: Section 3's discussion of preventing water loss in plants, pages Osmoregulation Chapter 42: Animal osmoregulation, sections 1, 2 (ignoring details of the shark system), and 3 TYK 1 & 2; TYU 1-4, 6; ACNS 3 Chapter 36: Plant vascular tissue, section 2 pages TYK 2 Chapter 37: Plant osmoregulation, sections 1 (on water potential) and 2 (with less emphasis on evidence for the cohesion tension theory) TYK 1-3; TYU 1; ACNS 1, 3 Inter-cell signaling Chapter 45: Nerves, sections 1 (ignoring Nernst and Goldman equations), 2 (focusing on voltage gated channels and action potential propagation), and 3 TYK 1 & 4; TYU 1-4 Chapter 47: Animal hormones, sections 1 (excluding human endocrine system overview) and 4. Section 2 goes over many examples of hormones, some of which we'll discuss in lecture (but you don't need to know every example listed in this section). TYK 2, 3; TYU 1, 2, 4, 5 Chapter 43: Diabetes discussion, section 4 TYU 6 Chapter 39: Plant hormones, sections 1, 2, and 5 (focusing on auxin; the other parts of that section may be useful for lab) TYK 4; TYU 4 Sensory systems Chapter 46: Animal sensory systems, sections 1, 3, and 4 TYU 1; ACNS 2 Chapter 39: Plant sensory systems, sections 1, 4, and 6 TYK 2 5
Growth and reproduction Chapter 48: Animal reproduction, sections 1 and 2 TYK 1 Chapter 40: Plant reproduction, section 1 (sections 2-4 will help with lab) TYU 1 Chapter 36: Plant growth, sections 2 & 3 (this will also help with lab) TYK 5 & 6; TYU 2 6
