On the next 3 pages snapshots from SDRA s Awards Banquet January 9 in Pierre Longtime pals take in SDRA s briefing and banquet together every year... SDRA member Jon Airhart of Fanny Horner s in Mitchell (left) and Spencer Gross of Thune True Value in Mitchell who served on SDRA s Board of Directors from 1995 to always travel together to SDRA s Annual Meeting. They ve even plowed their way through blizzards to get to the event! Joel Vockrodt, Office Peeps, Watertown (left) and SDRA President-Elect James Siemens of Hy-Vee in Sioux Falls chatted at the Awards Banquet. Like father, like son Following in the footsteps of his father Maury Vockrodt, who operated the business before him, Joel Vockrodt of Office Peeps in Watertown has attended many of SDRA s Annual Meetings. Here s what Joel had to say about SDRA: It s such a powerful group of course, but it s kind of a self-moderating group. It uses power wisely. So it has a great reputation because you know there s times when the group just says, No we can t push that, that s going too far. So there s just a lot of respect for this group. That s how I feel about it. So what is it about the organization that keeps these fellows so loyal? I think you have a very good lobby group and the programs that you have, like the health insurance and the credit card program are very good and helpful, notes Jon. As far as I m concerned, the Retailers is a great protector of the independent businessman. Period. So says Spencer. And hey, who are we to argue! h Past President John Meyer (left) of Office Products Center in Winner hobnobs with Public Utilities Commission Chairman Chris Nelson and Sen. Jeffrey Haverly of Rapid City. Meyer served as SDRA s Board President in 2009, and remains an ardent SDRA supporter, as well as a generous sponsor of our activities and events. 12 h Representative Fred Romkema (left), operates the Northern Hills Training Center in Spearfish and is an SDRA member. He mingled with 2011 Retailer of the Year Dick Fergen of Nick s Hamburger Shop in Brookings (center), and SDRA Board Member Brian Darnall of Medary Acres Greenhouse in Brookings. Dick surprised us by bringing items for our ProStart silent auction (see page 15). What a guy! Building an Association Terry Casey of Casey Drug and Jewelry in Chamberlain is a longtime SDRA member, and served as President from One of the farsighted people who believed the Association should own its own building, Terry served on the committee that selected a site in Pierre, and approved the plans for the building which became the Association s permanent headquarters marks our 20th year in the building. h Attorney Jim Hood of Spearfish, who has lobbied on behalf of SDRA for 15 years, spends time with SDRA member Diane Van Patten (center) of Normarke Bed & Breakfast in Nemo, attending her first SDRA Annual Meeting, and Public Utilities Commission Vice Chair Kristie Fiegen of Sioux Falls. Past President Terry Casey (center) and his wife Sharon Casey of Casey Drug and Jewelry in Chamberlain visit with Past President Jeff Jackson of the Wrangler Inn in Mobridge during the Social Hour.

SDRA members Jack and Sharon g DeDeyne of Jack s Janitorial Service in Huron attended their first SDRA Annual Meeting this year. During the social hour, they paused to chat with Rep. Susan Wismer of Britton and Paulette White of Huron. Salt of the earth members Back in 2005, Bernice and Jerry Klein of Klein s True Value in Gregory asked for our help with some legislation on fishing and hunting license laws. We drafted a bill, and they and their young daughter came to Pierre to testify in committee on both the House and Senate sides. They ve been great friends of the SDRA staff since then, and we re always glad to see them arrive at the Legislative Preview each year. Says Jerry about the reason they attend the Preview: It s important to keep up on the upcoming bills, the legislation, and make sure that you voice your opinion. h Doug Hainje of Dell Rapids Lumber (left) joined Dennis Moore of Moore Building Center in Murdo for dinner at the banquet. Doug served on the SDRA Board from 2004 to Hey Doug... thank you for helping us haul in more chairs when every seat was full at our Legislative Preview. SDRA member Bernie LaPlante of Lakota Thrifty g Mart in Eagle Butte (center) was joined at dinner by his brother JR LaPlante, Secretary of Tribal Relations for the State of South Dakota, and Rep. Betty Olson of Prairie City. We were excited to hear about the expansion plans that have been keeping Bernie busy. h After presenting his thoughts on the upcoming Legisla- tive Session at our Legislative Preview, House Minority Leader Bernie Hunhoff of Yankton (far left), spent time chatting with folks from the other end of the state: Gary Brown of C&G Brown LLC in Rapid City, who served as SDRA s Board President 17 years ago, and Debra and Jack Jensen of Black Hills Bagels, who attend SDRA s annual meeting and banquet nearly every year. Rep. Hunhoff is the publisher of South Dakota Magazine, and is an SDRA member. Relatively speaking h Who needs a family reunion when you can just come to SDRA events? SDRA Board Member Paul Sinclair of Liebe Drug in Milbank (left) and his brother-in-law David Forrette of the Millstone Family Restaurant in Milbank hung out together during the Social Hour. The two always team up at our annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser in September. They re also usually joined by Paul s older brother Clark Sinclair of Montgomery s Furniture in Madison / Montgomery s Furniture Gallery in Sioux Falls. Clark served as our Board President in Long lost cousins? Wally Thomsen (far left) of the Pierre Flower Shop and Greenhouse served on SDRA s Board from He and his wife Nancy Thomsen (second from left) attend this event faithfully every year. This year during the Social Hour, they bumped into Ann and Stewart Thomsen of Erv s Furniture in Bowdle. The two couples had never met before, but ended up having dinner together, and debated whether they may share some Danish ancestors. Says Wally, It s fun to come and meet new people, to renew acquaintances with legislators and discuss some issues, and it s even fun finding someone that spells their last name the same as I spell mine! 13

SDRA s Awards Banquet - where the cool g grocers hang out! Rep. Tom Jones of Viborg (left), owner of Jones Food Center, meets up with newly-elected SDRA Board Member RF Buche of Buche Foods in Wagner. SDRA is proud to note that Rep. Jones is one of 15 members of the Legislature who are either current SDRA members, or were members before retiring from business. Old faithfuls Roger Feickert of Midstates Printing in Aberdeen (center, with his wife Cathy Feickert) was President of SDRA s Board of Directors in Greg Gemar of Gemar s Market in Scotland served on the Board from 1996 to 2002, and his father Leighton Gemar was President of our board from 1975 to Like so many of our former Board Members, Roger and Greg have been very loyal about continuing to attend SDRA s events long after their board terms are up. So what keeps our Board Members returning for this particular event year after year? Part of it is just to make connection with the retailers. You know, we establish good friendships, Greg explains. Plus you have a chance to meet with the legislators. I thought our session today was especially interesting, when you put the legislators in there and get their perspective too. So it was a fun day, a good day. Roger shared his thoughts about the Association, and what it does for the membership. The South Dakota Retailers is one of the best organizations in the whole country as far as I know in terms of membership and involvement in our small rural state, he said. You know the people take serious the level of service and all they do for the customers. And as far as attending the Annual Meeting whenever he can, he notes that, It s great to come to these events, and mix with people and talk about the common problems and connect with everything that s going on. Phil Lampert of Walk in the Woods in Custer g and Dakotah Steakhouse in Rapid City went through the hors d oeuvres line with Rep. Mike Verchio of Hill City. Phil served as our Board President in 2003 and remains a staunch supporter. Rep. Verchio - who was an SDRA member when he was head of the Hill City Chamber of Commerce - sponsored a key piece of hospitality industry legislation last year to make South Dakota s seasonal minimum wage law mirror the federal law. The measure passed with SDRA s support. And last but not least Jeanne and Jack Clarke of Ken s Food Fair in Britton have been coming to SDRA s Annual Meeting for so long we can t even count that high. They are pictured with SDRA s regional representative for their area, Wes Malsom of Aberdeen (left). Jack didn t hesitate when asked why they make a point of coming to the event. f Ellis and Mary Lou Tripp of Budget Furniture in Belle Fourche and Cindy and Ken Wilmarth of H&H El Centro in Kadoka (left to right) at the banquet. The two couples have been members of SDRA s for many years, and we enjoy seeing them at our banquet every year. We attend every year because we get a chance to sit down in a social setting with the legislators from our district. We get updated on what things are coming up in the Legislative review process that the Retailers are supporting or not supporting for the upcoming year. It gives you kind of a heads-up what to watch for in the newsletter when it comes out. So if you have concerns you can voice those concerns back to the correct people to help the process. And that s exactly why we hold this event. We hope YOU LL be able to join all of these members for next year s Annual Meeting! 14

$3,000 fundraiser benefits high school students We were thrilled to raise $500 more than hoped for at the annual Silent Auction held at SDRA s Awards Banquet on January 9. The record $3,000 raised will benefit high school students participating in South Dakota s ProStart program. We thank the businesses who donated fantastic items for the event. And a big thanks to the generous bidders! ProStart helps raise awareness about the foodservice industry and helps to educate students about how to take advantage of the many career opportunities available in our industry. This is particularly important for a state like South Dakota where tourism and hospitality play such a major role. ProStart can facilitate a student s energy and drive to learn, excel and to compete as a team which are very useful and transferable skills for any career or higher learning endeavor. Terry VanDeWalle WR Restaurants Management/Minerva s Sioux Falls ProStart Committee Chair Anderson Furniture, Huron Applebee s Beck Motor Company, Pierre Casa Del Rey, Sioux Falls Cattleman s Club, Pierre What is ProStart? ProStart is a program that prepares high school students for business careers. The curriculum - used in many high schools - focuses on restaurant and foodservice courses, but it also provides an excellent education on skills that are essential in any place of employment. Students learn about business math, cost planning, labor costs, customer service, and inventory control. Along with hands-on training and study in the classroom, students also receive on-the-job experience. Competition is another key element of ProStart. Teams of students will put their cooking skills and business knowledge to the test in the 5th Annual South Dakota ProStart Competition March 20 at Mitchell Technical Institute. Two winning teams will advance to the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore. We encourage you to attend the competition, which kicks off at 8 a.m. Working with the South Dakota Department of Education, SDRA coordinates the program in South Dakota. Nationwide, ProStart is administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). South Dakota schools currently offering ProStart are: Britton-Hecla, Brookings, Huron, Lake Area Multi-District, Madison, McIntosh, Mitchell, Parkston, Sioux Falls, Sturgis, Todd County, Wagner and Webster. SDRA Board President Jeff Jackson presenting the Retailer of the Year Peggy Stout and her family had Award to Peggy Stout and Kathy Villa to evacuate from their Ft. Pierre home, which was surrounded by water, and Kathy Villa had four pumps running in her basement to keep it dry. They also had a pump running in the basement at their store, and while downtown Pierre was protected by a levee, they raised the merchandise in the store to be prepared in case the levee system failed. As Jackson stated, they and their staff continued to greet every customer with a smile, never complaining, and continuing to provide the same great service they re known for. Governor Dennis Daugaard congratulates Retailer of the Year recipients Kathy Villa (left) and Peggy Stout. Frequent reading events for children bring in tons of tots, who love the little nook that has been set aside just for them. Especially popular: a buffalo rug on the floor that works like a magnet for every child who enters the store. (And kids bring their parents along!) Doing it right, right from the start During their first year in business they were honored as Bookseller of the Year by the Midwest Booksellers Association, and there is a reason for that. From the start, they have given people a reason to come into their store. They have book readings, book signings, events for book club members, special nights for teachers, events for crafts people, gallery shows for artists, and they have even conducted events by Skype, said Jackson. We often hear complaints that young people don t read books any more. But Prairie Pages has a ton of young customers, because it s fun to be there. There are frequent book readings for kids. There is a cozy reading nook for young children, with a buffalo rug on the floor that no child can resist. And there is a Young Adult room, with books and other items just for teens and young adults. If Promoting other South Dakota businesses Jackson indicated that Stout and Villa are also committed to helping others succeed. They created a South Dakota Room in their store, he said. It s a cheerful room filled with artwork, books, greeting cards, jewelry, and food made by South Dakotans, and it gives a real boost to other entrepreneurs around the state. 6 AWARD continued from page 16 The staff that dreams are made of The staff at Prairie Pages is a group of avid readers who function more like family members than employees. The staff has joined Stout and Villa on buying trips, where they have had an opportunity to meet authors and help decide what books to purchase. The result is that they are well-versed in what the store sells and are able to make good recommendations to customers. When accepting the award, Villa said the staff is the reason the business is successful. They are the face of Prairie Pages, she said. They re the ones who greet you when you come in and they help you find what you re looking for, and they always say thank you for shopping with us when you leave. We just owe an awful lot to them. They re the reason that you have a good experience in Prairie Pages and they re the reason that you want to come back and experience it again. A staff that is cheerfully knowledgeable, creativity and a general commitment to excellence have made Prairie Pages Bookseller a destination place in downtown Pierre. Prairie Pages competes successfully with online booksellers and giant chains because of their personal touch. The front windows are always full of fun, artfully-arranged displays. Passers-by can t help stopping to look at the windows, and what they see draws them inside. Shawn Lyons, who is a regular This award is a customer at Prairie Pages big tribute to everyone that s supporting us and that comes in, Stout said when accepting the award. They are the store. It s not Kathy and I. It s that person that walks in the door and is willing to share the book that they read, or the one that they want to read. And that s what makes it really exciting for us. We re fortunate to live in the Capital, where there are a lot of people who are very supportive of a book store, very educated and fun loving people that go to a book for fun, for resource, and for entertainment. Congratulating Stout and Villa, South Dakota Retailers Association Executive Director Shawn Lyons said, It s a great store and a great success story, and we re glad to recognize them. The Retailer of the Year Award has been presented annually since 1982 by SDRA. n Book-signings are a regular feature at Prairie Pages. The store also promotes artists with gallery events. New in 2011: Skyping events, allowing readers to interact with authors online. 17

BOARD, cont. from pg 1 banquet, Anderson spoke in positive terms of the Association and its service to members. He went on to say that, With the challenges that face all retailers and businesses in South Dakota, we must continue to be innovative in our approach to business problem solving and flexible in our search for programs that will truly enhance the value offered to our members. Anderson has served on the SDRA Board of Directors since January of Training and marketing efforts are revitalized under Jackson s leadership The past year has seen some changes in the staff and the services that the association offers to its members to assist them in being competitive, informed and profitable, outgoing Board President Jeff Jackson told members at the January banquet. With numerous changes in staffing, 2011 proved to be an ideal time to take a look at what the Association can do to kick things up a notch or ten. Under Jackson s leadership, SDRA put itself under the microscope and did some strategic planning aimed at reinvigorating the staff, and boosting membership numbers. At the Awards Banquet, he told the membership that the groundwork done in 2011 will pay big dividends in the years ahead. The board has an aggressive goal to increase membership over the next couple years, Jackson stated. This program is in its initial state but we anticipate very positive results. It s an Having been on the board of directors, I realize even more the importance of all retailers, small or large, banding together to create a strong voice for all. investment in the long term future and prosperity of this association. He has served on the SDRA Board since Other election news The other two members of SDRA s Executive Board are James Siemens and DeLon Mork. Siemens was named President-Elect at the Annual Meeting. Gary Cammack of Cammack Ranch Supply in Union Center was elected to a second 3-year term. Brian Darnall of Medary Acres Greenhouse in Brookings was elected to a 3-year term. David Kline of Kline s Jewelry in Yankton was elected to a one-year term on SDRA s Services Corporation Board Mike Cole honored During the Annual Meeting, the organization also recognized retiring Past President Mike Cole of Lewis Drug in Sioux Falls. Cole had served on the SDRA Board since 2005 and was Board President in A note from Mike Cole The time I was with SDRA went beyond just board duties. We all became friends drawn together in the same cause: To make sure the business climate in South Dakota stayed healthy for businesses of all types. Whether we were big or small, national or local, innkeepers, grocers, restaurant owners or big box stores, or the local pharmacy down the street, we set aside time for each other and communicated our strengths and weaknesses in order to help each of our businesses to become better. It was uncanny how much we had in common no matter what business we were in. To show you the kind of board members and staff that makes up SDRA, the year I was president we went through the largest depression this country has known since the Dirty Thirties. Many organizations were folding, cutting back, basically just riding out the storm. I watched as the SDRA board members planned for the future. We took on two new highly successful programs in RTW and Austin Mutual, bringing more value and savings to our membership. In a firestorm of legislation to make up budget deficits in South Dakota, we had the most successful legislative session in I believe the history of SDRA. All in the name of keeping our South Dakota businesses profitable and frankly in business. It was my pleasure being on the SDRA board of directors and feeling like I was making a difference in South Dakota. Because I was on the board I did things I never would have done. It wasn t just feeling like making a difference; we did make a difference. Mike Cole Lewis Drug, Sioux Falls SDRA Board Member SDRA Board President 18

SDRA has a blast at the Tourism Conference SDRA s Brittney Hunsley and Seanna Regynski staffed our booth for two days in January at the Governor s Conference on Tourism, held at the Ramkota in Pierre. They joshed with members, handing out lots of fun (and funny) prizes. They also had an opportunity to talk to people who haven t been members, but are ready to sign up after hearing all the ways we help to serve the hospitality industry. Maria Tussing (left) of the popular Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City came by our booth, and talked to SDRA s Member Services Assistant Seanna Regynski, and Membership & Member Services Director Brittney Hunsley. As an SDRA member wearing her Proud to be a South Dakota Retailers Association Member, she got to choose a prize - and took home a pair of SDRA leather gloves. We were honored when State Tourism Board Member (and South Dakota tourism industry legend) Dave Geisler of Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo took time to stop by our booth and visit with Seanna Regynski. Dave was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2004, and in 2007 was recognized by SDRA as the South Dakota Retailer of the Year for his enormous contributions to South Dakota s visitor industry and great customer service. There s a reason this congenial man is known as Your friend by the side of the road. Jenn Hanna of the Great Lakes Association (right) paused to chat with SDRA s Brittney Hunsley. As an SDRA member wearing her Proud to be a South Dakota Retailers Association Member, Jenn got to draw for a fun prize - and ended up with a wiffle ball rocket shooter. Better watch out Karen Kern! (That s Jenn s ever-cheerful boss, who also stopped by our booth. Karen pulled a Slinky out of the grab box - she told us she couldn t wait to put it on her desk, and laughingly said it was worth her membership to get a Slinky!) Here s what Dave Geisler of Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo had to say about SDRA: We follow the newsletter from the Retailers religiously, especially the tax reports, and all the various things that pertain to our business. It s been very helpful. We use it kind of like - well, it s right below the Bible! Okay, we think he might have been having a little fun with us on that last bit, but we sure appreciate Dave and his longtime membership in the South Dakota Retailers Association.
