7 [DISCUSSION DRAFT] 86th SESSION S. 8 Whereas, according the American Bar Association: Research shows that masculine terminology skews perception about who should seek and hold certain jobs and who may aspire to leadership positions ; Whereas, The University of Nevada should encourage every individual, regardless of gender to succeed within the same job fields and aspire for the same leadership positions; Whereas, many state legislators have begun efforts to eliminate gender pronouns from all state level legislation such as: Connecticut, Montana, North Dakota, and California; Whereas, The University of Nevada should follow this precedent that is presented by these other states in order to further be the catalyst for gender equality; Be it enacted by the Senate of the Associated Students, a) A question Seeking approval of voters shall appear on the ballot for the 09 General Election as follows: Shall the Associated Students of the University of Nevada eliminate all gender pronouns from the Constitution of the Organization in order to be more inclusive to all of the students on the University of Nevada campus? ; Be it further enacted by the Senate of the Associated Students, a) That pursuant to passage of the ballot question by the Student Body, the Constitution of the Associated Students at the University of Nevada, be updated to eliminate all gender pronouns. nguage.authcheckdam.pdf

10 [DISCUSSION DRAFT] 86th SESSION S. Res. 86- A Resolution Not in Support of the Proposed Latin Honors Criteria IN THE SENATE OF THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OCTOBER RD, 08 SUBMITTED BY SENATOR COLLINS, SENATOR LEMUS, AND SENATOR SEWELL A Resolution Not in Support of the Proposed Latin Honors Criteria 5 6 Whereas, the newly proposed Latin Honors criteria would change the current criteria of varying GPA ranges across each college to instead be a standard set for every college as follows: Summa Cum Laude: GPA range.95 Magna Cum Laude: GPA range Cum Laude: GPA Range Whereas, the criteria for students to graduate with Latin Honors currently set in place states the following: -At least 90 semester credits earned in courses graded A-F
11 At least 60 semester credits earned in residence at UNR in courses graded A-F -If a transfer student, satisfaction of the Latin Honor GPA requirement at this university and in the combined, transfer university GPA. Whereas, although this newly proposed criteria would enable a higher percentage of students graduating with a Latin Honors distinction overall based off the class of 08 in May (.66% with the new criteria vs. 6.5% with the current criteria), there would be large discrepancies between separate colleges. For example, while the College of Business would have 6.% and Interdisciplinary programs would have,99% of their students graduating with Latin Honors, the students majoring in Health Sciences would have 8.8 Whereas, these discrepancies between colleges are unfair to students, and creates an imbalance in the reputation and credibility of Latin Honors at the university overall. 6% of their students graduating with Latin Honors. Whereas, if the University s graduating class of 08 in May were to have the newly proposed criteria applied, then the College of Engineering and the College of Business would have a decrease in the percentage of students graduating with Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude. Whereas, if the University s graduating class of 08 in May were to have the newly proposed criteria applied, then the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources and the College of Journalism would have a decrease in the percentage of students graduating with Cum Laude. Whereas, if the University were to adopt the newly proposed criteria, the semester credit requirements and transfer student requirements will be eliminated.
12 5 Be it resolved that, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada do not support the proposed modified system for Latin Honors GPA requirements to be uniform across all the colleges within the university. Be it further resolved that, a copy of this resolution be sent to Provost Dr. Kevin R. Carman, all University deans, and the President of the University, Marc Johnson.
