1 One Good Turn Coulee Region Woodturners Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners Volume 8, Issue 11 November 5, 2008 Specialty Tools Onalaska Community Center 9am November 15 The CRW November meeting will be on Specialty Tools. We ve seen skews, gouges, and scrapers but there are a few more tools that may not be as common and are still quite useful. At last month s meeting Mike Stafford used a Hunter tool in some end grain applications. As part of the November meeting, a larger version of the Hunter tool will be used in some bowl turning applications. A pyramid point tool, also called a three point tool, will be used to show how details, including small beads, can be formed on end grain. A chatter tool will be used with two different techniques to change the effect, one will be on spin tops and another to make a decorative inlay for a box lid. A homemade Straka Chuck will be used to securely reverse turn bowls and vessels, as well as how it s built. These topics, along with a few more, will be the topics for the Specialty Tools edition of Shorts at this month s meeting. Also remember to bring your Inside/Out challenge pieces too. See ya there!! For directions to Onalaska Community Center see map on the last page. PrezSez: The professional meeting with Mike Stafford was a good one. He demonstrated how to make many small items that everyone can do. We had a good crowd with much participation from the audience. Many people went up and actually took a turn at trying out different tools. Mike Hunter, of Hunter tools, donated two hollowing tools that we auctioned off for the club and the winners had to go up and try out their new tools. No one with the new tools had a catch. Mr. Stafford was very entertaining and told many interesting stories. Remember that the Inside/Out turning challenge is due this coming meeting, the categories are Best Piece, Most Artistic, Best Use, and Most Imaginative. Pam will have some coupons for each chosen piece and I encourage members to bring in anything they have of an inside/out turning. The club is there to learn from each other so do not be afraid to bring in a piece. Please read in the newsletter about the new guideline for using the clubs tools and equipment. We also have a list of by-laws that we need the membership s approval. Please look them over and we will discuss these items at the December meeting. It is good to hear that several people have stepped forward to fill the officer positions but we still need a newsletter editor. This is a very important post because it is one of the ways our club communicates with its members. I would encourage anyone interested in applying for this position or any other please contact any of the present officers. If anyone is interested in being an officer, you can still put your name in the hat because these are elected positions. It is that time of year where we will need to start collecting dues. Right now we will keep the amount the same as last year, $35 for the year. You can start paying Pam or any present officer, the sooner the better so we know what we have for planning events. Duane Hill is going to organize another group buy through Craft Supplies. He will need the name of item, catalog number, price, and page number for each item. He does a great job of this and please thank him for his efforts, it does take some time to do this. John Fisher

5 Volume 8, Issue 11 Page 5 So you think that the elections are over? Wrong. CRW is having it s election in December. You still have time to run for one of the elected positions that the club has open. If that doesn t excite you, then volunteer for an unelected position. The more people help out, the easier it is for everyone. The club needs you now. Remember to come and vote at the December meeting. There will be no hanging chads. DECEMBER MEETING Take note that the December meeting will be the SECOND Saturday of the month instead of the third. A scheduling conflict with the Community Center made the change necessary, so please mark your calendar so that you ll be there on the 13 th of December. Duane Hill will be demonstrating turning a sphere, so I m sure you won t want to miss it. We ll also be holding officer elections, so your presence is highly encouraged. Open Shop Night is held Tuesdays at Duane Hill's shop (808 Quincy in Onalaska) from 7-9 pm. The format is open, anything relating to woodturning is allowed. Please call before Tuesday ( ) to make sure Duane will be there. FROM THE TREASURER: Financial information from the Mike Stafford demonstration: Total Income (demo fee, tool raffles, lunch): $1, Expenses: Demonstrator fee $1, Rent $ Pop, chips, etc. $35.19 Total expenses -$1, Net Income $ Upcoming CRW Meetings: Nov 15 Program: Specialty Tools by Greg Haugen & Lee Goehring. Location: Onalaska. Meeting Leader: John Fisher Dec 13 Program: Turning Spheres by Duane Hill Location: Onalaska. Meeting Leader: TBD Guidelines for Club Equipment and tool usage Personal usage Must be a club member to borrow club equipment from the storage area. Length of time for check out is 30 days. It would be best to acquire equipment on meeting days; other times would require pre-arrangements with the tool czar. The person borrowing the tool(s) is also responsible to make arrangements to return the equipment within 30 days. The person using the material is responsible for tool condition on all items and must repair or replace equipment if damaged or not returned in the same condition. The Tool Czar is responsible to keep track of the condition of the equipment when returned and when it is loaned out. The Czar should also keep a log of who has equipment, the date signed out and returned as well as the tool(s) condition. Club Events Club members and visitors may use the equipment and tools during club sponsored events. If the equipment breaks during a club event, the person using the equipment will not be responsible for repairs unless the damage was done under malice.

6 Volume 8, Issue 11 Craft Supplies Group Buy It has been a little while since we last did a group buy from Craft Supplies. We need a $1000 minimum order to get at least 10% off and free shipping. All items will be shipped to one location and distributed from there. Send your order to Duane Hill by either mail, or phone. Include your name, the item(s) you want, quantity of each item, part number of each item and the cost. Send no money now. The amount you owe depends on our discount. The bigger the club order, the bigger the discount. The deadline is the November meeting. Duane will not be at the November meeting. If you are bringing your order to the meeting, please give it to Pam Reilly. We hope to have the orders in by Christmas. A-Line Fall Woodworking Show We still need a few people to demonstrate and/or talk at the A-Line Fall Woodworking Show, November 14 &15. The show runs from 9-6 on Friday, November 14 and from 9-1 on Saturday, November 15. To demonstrate, you MUST be an AAW member (for insurance purposes). No requirements if you want to talk. If you are interested, contact Duane Hill by November 9. This show typically gets a lot of people and we have brought in several members because of it. Coulee Region Woodcarvers have offered to carve cane heads for veterans, if we turn the canes. Contact Duane Hill for more information and/or if you are interested. Monthly Tip An old Fry Daddy or crock pot found at a garage sale makes an excellent vessel for melting paraffin wax in for sealing blanks. A Fry Daddy will hold up to 2 lbs of paraffin. When melting the paraffin, make sure you keep an eye on it and unplug the heat source when everything just melts. This will keep the paraffin from flashing. The Fry Daddy and/or crock pot keeps the paraffin liquid for at least an hour. Website News from the webmaster You can now access all newsletters starting from the club's first year in 2001 on the website at All told, there are about 140 megabytes of PDF newsletters stored on the site so you long-time members can take a walk down memory lane, and the newer members can get a good look at history of the club. Not only that, but in June 2001 the website began and since then, over 10,000 pictures of meetings and special events totaling about 200 megabytes have been added to the site, mostly in the CRW Gallery. If you would like to start at the beginning, just go to the predecessor of the current Gallery section at and work your way up in time as your spare time allows. Hope you enjoy the browsing, but don't let it take away from your turning time! DUES ARE DUE Ken Grunke CRW Webmaster Club dues for 2009 are $35 per person, $15 for each additional family member. Dues will be start being accepted at the November meeting. Any dues not paid by the end of the January meeting will result in unpaid members being removed from mailing lists and membership roster. Cash is always accepted and checks should be made payable to CRW. You may pay Pam at the meeting or send your check to her at: CRW c/o Pam Reilly 720 Riverwood Court Elgin, MN Page 6

7 Volume 8, Issue 11 Page 7 Coulee Region WoodTurners Dear Members, Each year it is the responsibility of the Holmen Show Choir Boosters to raise dollars. These dollars help defer the cost each student has to pay to participate in Show Choir, as well as, purchase Costumes, competition fees, bus transportation to competitions etc. Each year the Show Choir Boosters host two fundraisers. The Show Choir will host their Lasagna Dinner on December 6 th at the Holmen American Legion. A Silent Auction will be held during the Dinner. This Silent Auction is very important to the overall success of this fundraiser. It s only successful because of businesses like yours who participate in donating items. THANK YOU in advance to Pam and to Duane for your past support of Holmen Show Choir. If any members would be interested in donating an item for the Silent Auction it would be greatly appreciated. Bowls, boxes, ornaments absolutely anything the people just love! If you are interested in donating, please bring your items to the November meeting and I will get them at that time or I can arrange to pick them up before the Dinner on December 6th. With your donated item, please have written out the type of wood you used and your name as we certainly would like to give individual credit. If you have a business card those work great too. With donations and support the Show Choir Boosters can continue to provide financially to the Show Choir Programs at Holmen High School. Thank you so much for your time! Have a great day! Renee Zeller Donations Committee Holmen Show Choir Lasagna Dinner 316 Morris Street Holmen, WI (608) (H) (507) (W) ATTENTION MEMBERS: At the December meeting, in addition to electing officers, we will be voting to ratify updated by-laws. They have been printed in this newsletter for you to read and review. Please do read them and be prepared to vote in December. We need a majority of the paid membership to vote, so do your best to attend the December meeting.
