1 Associate Professor Pete Lentini, Director, Global Terrorism Research Centre, Monash University Associate Professor Pete Lentini (BA, Rhode Island; PhD, Glasgow) is Co-Founding Director of the Global Terrorism Research Centre (GTReC), Monash University and the Founder of its Master of Counter-Terrorism Studies program. He is a co-chief investigator on the Australian Research Council Project, Understanding Terrorism in an Australian Context: Radicalisation, De-Radicalisation and Counter-Radicalisation, jointly conducted by GTReC members, Victoria Police, Australian Federal Police, Department of Premier and Cabinet and Department of Justice, State Government of Victoria. He regularly lectures to various government, police, community, and other counter-terrorism stakeholders on matters pertaining to radicalisation and countering violent extremism. Associate Professor Lentini was an Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Arts, and Head and Deputy Head of its School of Political and Social Inquiry. Monash University has recognized his contribution to community-based research partnerships (2006 and 2012) and small group teaching (2009), and has presented him with multiple awards for excellence in postgraduate supervision (1998 and 2011). His latest book, Neojihadism: A New Understanding of Terrorism and Extremism? will soon be published by Edward Elgar. Andrew Zammit, Researcher, ARC Linkage Project on Radicalisation, Monash University Andrew Zammit completed a Masters of Counter-Terrorism Studies at Monash University which included a dissertation on radicalisation in Australia. Andrew is currently a researcher with GTReC and an Associate Editor for Australian Policy Online. He has previously been a sessional tutor for the subject Crisis Zone: International Relations of the Middle East and is co-founder of Bayside Friends of Laleia, a community aid group established to assist development in East Timor. He was also an editor and co-founder of Quarterly Access, a magazine for young writers on international affairs. His work can be found at: Shandon Harris Hogan, Researcher, ARC Linkage Project on Radicalisation, Monash University Shandon Harris-Hogan is a researcher at the Global Terrorism Research Centre and a graduate of Monash University s Master of International Relations program. Shandon s work surrounds neojihadism and its presence in Australia. More specifically, his research involves the use of social network analysis to track neojihadist activity in Australia and Australia s links to the global movement. Other areas of expertise include analysis of the structure of terrorist networks and the logic of terrorist tactics and targeting. A/Prof Kumar Ramakrishna, Head, Centre of Excellence for National Security, S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Kumar Ramakrishna is an Associate Professor and Head of the Centre of Excellence for National Security (CENS) (currently on sabbatical leave) at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Singapore. He was Head (Studies) of the School from He obtained a First Class (Honours) in Political Science from the National University of Singapore in 1989 and a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from the University of New South Wales in He went on to secure his PhD in History from Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, in His current research interests include British propaganda in the Malayan Emergency, propaganda theory and practice, history of strategic thought and counter-terrorism with focus on radicalisation. He was also an Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Special Visitor in March In 7
2 2008, he was appointed as Senior Advisor to the Trusted Information Network on Extremism and Transnational Crime in Southeast Asia and Australia. He has co-edited two well-received books on counter-terrorism, The New Terrorism: Anatomy, Trends and Counter-Strategies (2002) as well as After Bali: The Threat of Terrorism in Southeast Asia (2004). He has also written two books entitled Emergency Propaganda: The Winning of Malayan Hearts and Minds, (2002) and Radical Pathways: Understanding Muslim Radicalisation in Indonesia (2009). He is a member of the Singapore Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) Resource Panel on Home Affairs and Law, member of the Board of Trustees, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, member of the Board of Governors of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) Academy, and Executive Committee Member of the Political Science Association (Singapore). He is a member of the Executive Board of the Council for Asian Transnational Threats Research, an international network of transnational security research centres, spearheaded by the Institute for Defense Analyses in the United States. Professor Joseph Chinyong Liow, Professor of Comparative and international Politics and Associate Dean, RSIS, Singapore Joseph Chinyong Liow is currently Professor of Comparative and International Politics and Associate Dean at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is the author or editor of 11 books, including Islam, Education, and Reform in Southern Thailand: Tradition and Transformation (Singapore: ISEAS, 2009), Piety and Politics: The Shifting Contours of Islamism in Contemporary Malaysia (New York: Oxford University Press, 2009), and Islam in Southeast Asia. Four Volumes (London: Routledge, 2010). He is currently working on the fourth edition of Dictionary of the Modern Politics of Southeast Asia, commissioned by Routledge. Dr Ian Chalmers, Curtin University Dr Chalmers is a senior lecturer in Asian Studies and International Relations in the Faculty of Humanities, Curtin University. He has extensive research experience in Southeast Asia, having investigated the political economy of development in the region generally and in Indonesia in particular. He now teaches on international relations and comparative religion in Asia, and has a specific interest in the role of religion in Muslim communities. His current research focus is on the relationship between local politics and Islamic theology in Indonesia. Raffaello Pantucci, Associate Fellow, International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR), King s College, London Raffaello Pantucci is an Associate Fellow at the International Center for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) at King s College, London. He is the author of the forthcoming We Love Death As You Love Life: Britain s Suburban Mujahedeen (Hurst/Columbia University Press). He has worked at think tanks in London, Shanghai and Washington and has been published in journals like Survival, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Terrorism and Political Violence and in media outlets like the International Herald Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, Jane s amongst others. His work can be found at: Dr Patrick Kimunguyi, Researcher, GTReC and Monash University European and EU Centre Patrick Kimunguyi is a lecturer at the Monash European and EU Centre at Monash University, Australia. He teaches and coordinates a variety of subjects including Peace and Security, and Jean Monnet Modules on The European Union and the Developing World as well as The European Union and World (2012). 8
3 Patrick is also a researcher at the Global Terrorism Research Centre, Monash University. He is examining terrorism in Europe and East Africa on the ARC Linkage project, Radicalisation and Deradicalisation in an Australian Context. He has also held teaching and research positions at the University of Melbourne and Deakin University, Australia. He completed his PhD in Political Science and Masters in International Relations at the Institute of International Relations, University of Warsaw. Dr Anna Halafoff, Research Fellow, Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University Dr. Anna Halafoff is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University. Previously, she was a researcher and lecturer at the Global Terrorism Research Centre and a researcher for the UNESCO Chair in Interreligious and Intercultural Relations Asia Pacific, at Monash University ( ). Dr Halafoff's research projects/interests include: intercultural and interreligious relations; cosmopolitan governance; multiculturalism; community engagement and countering violent extremism; religions and beliefs education; and Buddhism in Australia. In 2011, she was named a United Nations Alliance of Civilizations' Global Expert in the fields of multifaith relations, and religion and peacebuilding. Dr Halafoff is currently the Secretary of the Australian Association for the Study of Religion (AASR) and the Co-convenor of The Australian Sociological Association s (TASA) Sociology of Religion Thematic Group. Debra Smith, Researcher, ARC Linkage Project on Radicalisation, Monash University Debra Smith is currently in the final year of her PhD at Monash University. Her project explores the relationship between emotion and violent political agency. Debra also works as a researcher at the Global Terrorism Research Centre at Monash University Dr Simon Moss, Researcher, ARC Linkage Project on Radicalisation, Monash University Dr Simon Moss is a senior lecturer at Monash University and research fellow at Deakin University. His primary research interest concerns how characteristics of organizations and societies, such as leadership, influence the psychological processes of individuals, such as their mood, creativity, intuition, engagement, honesty, and altruism. To investigate these issues, he has published a broad range of books and articles in the fields of leadership, personality, motivation, integrity, perception, attention, and stress. He is an author of The Science of Management: Fighting fads and fallacies with evidence-based practices, Sustainable coaching, and The negative side of positive thinking. He is currently the chief investigator for the Terrorist Motivations in Indonesia project, funded by Australian Research Council He was the C.V. Mr. Max Boon, Associate Fellow, International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, The Hague Max Boon obtained his Master's Degree in Southeast Asian Affairs & Management at Leiden University (2002) specializing in Indonesian Political and Economical affairs. At the Dutch Foreign Ministry he was responsible for the co-ordination and organization of the Dutch Chairmanship of the International Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation (HCOC) ( ). In 2004 Max set up and managed the office and operations of PA Asia (part of PA International) in Jakarta, Indonesia, focusing on public affairs advice to a wide range of clients, among which many multinationals but also national and local authorities ( ). Subsequently he was involved as Editorial Manager in a political and business review of Indonesia by Oxford Business Group in Jakarta ( ), and as project adviser for public affairs and communication by post-tsunami rebuilding efforts for Royal Dutch Haskoning group in Aceh ( ). In 2008 Max joined Political and Economical Consultancy CastleAsia in Jakarta, advising CEOs of over 130 of Indonesia's largest corporations ( ). Since Max became a victim of the 2009 Marriott Jakarta terrorist bomb attack where he lost both his legs, he works together with the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT - The Hague) on Countering Extremist Violence (CVE) efforts, focusing on the role victims could and should play in this effort. mboon@icct.nl Dr Anne Aly, ECR Fellow, Faculty of Humanities, Curtin University Dr Anne (Azza) Aly is an ECR Fellow at Curtin University s Faculty of Humanities. Her research focuses on radicalisation, violent extremism and counter terrorism. She is the author of Terrorism and Global Security: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives (2011, Palgrave Macmillan). Anne has contributed over 40 publications in books, journals and conference proceedings on various themes including counter terrorism, radicalisation, Muslim identity and constructions of terrorism. She was appointed to the Board of the Council for Australian Arab Relations in 2009 and also sits on the Australian Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA Management Committee. In 2011, Anne was inducted into the inaugural WA Women s Hall of Fame in recognition of her contribution to the fields of counter-terrorism and national security. Dr Basia Spalek, Reader in Communities and Justice, Institute of Applied Social Studies, University of Birmingham Dr Basia Spalek is a Reader in Communities & Justice within the Institute of Applied Social Studies at the University of Birmingham. Kate is also currently a PhD candidate at Monash University doing interviews with former activists about how and why they have left violent/extreme political groups. There is very little primary research in this area because it is so hard to find and talk with former members. Kate s preliminary findings already provide direction for policies and programs aimed at countering violent extremism and radicalisation as well as raising interesting questions for social reintegration. 6 Phone/fax: Mobile: Prof Greg Barton, Herb Feith Research Professor for the Study of Indonesia, A/Director, Centre for Islam and the Modern World, Deputy UNESCO Chair in Interreligious and Intercultural Relations Asia Pacific and Chief Investigator, ARC LP on Radicalisation, Monash University Greg is the Herb Feith Research Professor for the study of Indonesia in the Faculty of Arts at Monash. He is based in the Politics stream in the school of Political and social Inquiry. He is acting director of the Centre for Islam and the Modern World (CIMOW), Deputy UNESCO Chair in Interreligious and Intercultural Relations Asia Pacific, and is a member of the Global Terrorism Research Centre (GTReC). For the past twenty years Greg has been active in inter-faith dialogue initiatives and has a deep commitment to building understanding of Islam and Muslim society. The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong general interest in comparative international politics. Over the past two decades Greg has undertaken extensive research on Indonesian politics and society especially the role of Islam as both a constructive and disruptive force. Since 2004 he has made a comparative study of progressive Islamic thought in Turkey and Indonesia and is hoping to extend this comparative study to India. Greg also has a general interest in security studies and human security and a particular interest in counter-terrorism. As an active member of GTReC he continues to research Jemaah Islamiyah and other radical Islamist movements in South East Asia. He also teaches several counter-terrorism courses each year at the Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies (APCSS) in Honolulu and with other institutions and agencies. Muhamad Zarkasih, Head of International Cooperation, Detachment 88, Indonesian National Police Jack is fast becoming one of the regional specialist trainers for police in counter-terrorism activities in South East Asia and beyond. This has developed from his operative experience in the field, particularly as a senior intelligence officer with the Anti-Terror squad based at the Indonesian National Police Headquarters in Jakarta (called the Special Detachment 88 Anti Terror, Indonesian National Police HQ) Zarkasih (or Jack) spent the first part of his 28 years after graduating with a law degree alternatively working in the anti-drug squad at police headquarters, and six years as the Station Commander in East Kalimantan at Bontang PD Station (in old Borneo). He also has served overseas as investigator Team Leader in the United Nations (UN) Police Peace Keeping Force in Cambodia (UNTAC) , and in Eastern Slovenia Croatia (UNTAES) , and Bosnia Herzegovina (UNMIBH) However for the past eight years Jack has been an Intelligence/investigator officer of Special Detachment 88 Anti Terror Unit, which is responsible for counter terrorism activity in Indonesia. As a senior investigator, Jack has been involved in several bombing and terrorist cases in Indonesia, including the bombing of the Indonesian Embassy in Paris in France in
7 Jack has also taken his experience regionally, being on special order as project manager of the Multi- National Operational Support Team (MNOST) from 2005 to This organization consists of six countries (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Australia and Indonesia) and has its headquarters at Semarang in Indonesia. MNOST works on a Terrorism Intelligence database. Jack's experience in anti-terrorism work now also sees him as a regional trainer of police on the issue, including being the Counter Terrorism Trainer at JCLEC (Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation) at Semarang in Central Java-Indonesia and also as a trainer in the Asia Regional of Law Enforcement Management Program (ARLEMP) on counter terrorism issues at Hanoi, Vietnam and Melbourne, Australia. Jack also has experience as a guest speaker in regional /international workshop or seminars especially on the topic on Counter Terrorism and as an Intelligence Liaison Officer in International events during 2010 such as the APEC Meeting in Yokohama Japan and G20 Leaders meeting in Seoul Korea, At the moment he is also Project Manager of the Deradicalization Program for Counter Terrorism which sees him co-coordinating closely with police from other regional countries. Adam James Fenton, Charles Darwin University, Australia The speaker graduated with an Arts/Law(Hons) degree from Monash University and is currently undertaking a Masters by Research degree at Charles Darwin University, Australia. He has been admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and previously worked in law enforcement operations in the area of Australian border security. His research topic Combating Terror: Indonesia s Legislative and Law Enforcement Response to the Terrorist Threat is an examination of Indonesia s Anti Terrorism legislation and law enforcement regime. Her research focuses on glocalisation of separatist terrorism in Southern Thailand. Related areas of research are globalisation and conflict transformation, ethno-nationalism, terrorism and counter-terrorism, radicalisation, social media and military, especially in Thailand and Southeast Asia. Between 2007 and 2011, Virginie conducted fieldwork in Thailand and met with key actors who are shaping an understanding of the conflict in Southern Thailand. From 2009 to 2011, she was research leader on a 24 months project on Mapping Violence in Southern Thailand. She has also worked with NGOs in Thailand on conflict resolution issues. Before coming to Monash University, she was program officer for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) in Brussels, and worked for the Asia-Europe Foundation in Singapore. Bruce McFarlane, PhD candidate and Researcher, Global Terrorism Research Centre and Politics Department, Monash University Bruce McFarlane has 14 years of operational law enforcement experience with Victoria Police (Australia) and has worked in a variety of investigative, computer forensic and online/security intelligence roles within Australia and the United Kingdom. Bruce has a Bachelor of Arts (International Relations). Bruce is currently a full-time PhD candidate and researcher at the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University. Supervised by Professor Greg Barton, Bruce's PhD research project, titled '@Terror.com: An Examination of Violent Extremist Literature and New Media as a Measure of Radicalisation', is focusing on how violent extremists interact and utilise the online environment to facilitate terrorist related acts. Christopher Heffelfinger, writer and consultant on terrorism and radicalization based in Washington, DC Christopher Heffelfinger is a writer and consultant on terrorism and radicalization based in Washington, DC. He previously served as a fellow at the Combating Terrorism Center at the United States Military Academy (West Point), contributing the majority of his efforts to the CTC-FBI education collaborative. Mr. Heffelfinger is also the author of "Radical Islam in America: Salafism's Journey from Arabia to the West" (2011). Prior to that, Chris edited two volumes on terrorism for the Jamestown Foundation. He is a fluent Arabic speaker, having studied in Yemen in 2000, where he attended the same language school as John Walker Lindh. Muhammad Iqbal, Researcher, ARC Linkage Project on Radicalisation, Monash University Muhammad Iqbal is a Researcher at the Global Terrorism Research Centre (GTReC). He is a graduate of Monash University s Master of International Relations, completing a dissertation on the historical development of Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia. His interests include radical movements in Indonesia and Australia, as well as progressive Islamic thought and movements in Indonesia. Dr Clarke Jones, Research Fellow, ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security, ANU 14
9 Dr Clarke Jones is a Research Fellow in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS) at the Australian National University. Before moving to the CEPS, Clarke worked for the Australian Government for 15 years in several areas of national security. Clarke has a PhD from the University of NSW and a Masters in criminology from RMIT University. Clarke s current research focuses particularly on the effects of the prison environment on the radicalisation and de-radicalisation of terrorist inmates in the Philippine corrective system. Dr. Quirine Eijkman and Bart Schuurman MA Quirine Eijkman is a Senior-Researcher and Lecturer at the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism of Leiden University. Additionally, she is a consultant for Justice Q&A. Previously she worked for the Police and Human Rights Programme of Amnesty International, the Human Rights Committee of the Dutch Advisory Council on International Affairs, the Roosevelt Academy of Utrecht University, the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and at the International Humanitarian Law Department of the Netherlands Red Cross. In 2007, she defended her PhD thesis We Are Here to Serve You!: Public Security, Police Reform and Human Rights Implementation in Costa Rica at Utrecht University. Currently, she is a Member of the Board of Upeace-the Hague and a Member of the Board of Advisors of the Dutch Platform on Civil Rights and the Dutch Section of the International Commission of Jurists ('NJCM') of which between 2005 and 2011 she was the (vice-) President. She has published on the side-effects of security measures for human rights, police reform, and human rights mobilization. Her areas of interest include security and human rights, counter-terrorism, transitional justice and the sociology of law. Bart Schuurman is a Junior Researcher and PhD student at Leiden University's Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism. After graduating cum laude with an MA in international relations from Utrecht University, Bart has worked as a researcher on a variety of projects. One of these investigated the efficacy of democratic states' counterterrorism measures, while another looked at factors that influence negotiation processes between states and violent non-state actors. His research interests include contemporary jihadist terrorism, strong-power defeats in asymmetric conflicts, Clausewitizian military theory and the relationship between public support and escalation processes in terrorismrelated conflicts. In his dissertation, Bart focuses on the interaction between structural-, group-, and individual-level explanations for the rise and development of the so-called 'Hofstadgroup', a looselybound jihadist network that was active in the Netherlands from roughly Ms Sulastri Osman, Associate Research Fellow, RSIS, Singapore Sulastri Osman is an Associate Research Fellow with the Centre of Excellence for National Security (CENS) at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She researches on terrorism and counterterrorism in Indonesia.
