1 Peace and Conflict Studies I: Global Security & Conflict Resolution Professor: Dr. John Ungerleider; Fall 1996; 3 credits Bachelor s Program in World Issues School for International Training, Brattleboro, Vermont Course Goals and Description This course will address the prospect of improving global security through 1) understanding relationships among the sources of violent conflict and 2) responding to these threats through comprehensive approaches to conflict resolution and prevention. We will explore the relationship between global and personal levels of peace and conflict. Defining themes stem from contemporary intercommunal struggles, in particular Balkan violence and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We will review strategies for cooperative security, especially approaches to peacekeeping, peacemaking and peacebuilding, as well as the impact of peace activism. We will simulate the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in a mock international negotiation to illustrate course themes. The class will include readings, discussion, lecture, videos, writing, oral presentation, experiential learning and a simulated regional peace conference. For grading, overall course participation will be weighted equally with each of three major assignments. Requirements 1) participate in all class activities--complete weekly assignments, attendance is important; 2) do a group presentation and mid-term paper on one issue of peace and conflict,focusing on a topic or region; 3) participate in a peace conference simulation; 4) write a final paper relating course themes to the Arab- Israeli conflict/peace process.
