3 Police Brutality Mission Statement We the Digital Bridge Academy Police Brutality team s mission is to access the impact and effects of police brutality within the our community. We, as a community, have a responsibility to be involved in our own city, work with the Police Department and to assure that Brutality doesn t exist.

5 Thesis Questions Does police brutality exist in our community? Have any people in our community experienced police brutality? Is there a partnership between police and our community? As students what can we do to foster a good relationship between the community and the police department?

9 Age of people surveyed: A total of 150 surveys: Below 15 years of age 18% Between years of age 18% Between years of age 26% 31+ years of age 38%

10 Who is in need? Santa Cruz County. Police departments in Santa Cruz County. People in our communities.

11 What Are the Needs? The community must know that they can equality impact and influence themselves. There should be a partnership between the police and citizens of our community. We must find and provide a better way to educate our citizens in the community in how to organize and better assign representatives to advocate for them and their rights.

12 How do we know it is a need? There seems to be a lack of understanding within the community. Leadership is an extension which serves as a bridge, bringing closer the cities constituents to the police department. There is no apparent fellowship between our community and the police department. 75% people surveyed did not know the definition of police brutality.

13 When are the needs evident? More 79% of the surveyed seemed apathetic to police brutality. About 25% of the people that were surveyed know what police brutality meant. Police officers believe they are serving the community without forming a fellowship that helps unite the community.

14 Needs The Citizens of Santa Cruz County must become more involved in their communities and neighborhoods. The Police must make more of a strong effort to establish themselves in a fellowship with the citizens in Santa Cruz County. We must encourage the citizens within our community to help and develop relationships between themselves and the police departments.

15 Diverse needs of the Community What is a priority for the community? Gangs, drugs, violence etc. It must be advocated to police. Community must understand boundaries which must be advocated to commissioner of police. Public needs to be engaged in events in their community. It s their responsibility. Communicate a clear purpose and understanding of police brutality.

16 Solutions Statement There should be a seminar aimed at informing the community of the effects of police brutality, more people would be aware and more active, which may help minimize or prevent police brutality in their communities. Fostering relationship between police department and people of the community is crucial for a unity in the community. Public needs to be engaged in events in their community. (it s their responsibility) Police is a part of the community.

17 Solution Statement Public response based on the severity of the event. There are times when the police need to act accordingly and get the job done. (Any Means Necessary) Leadership in the community will help bring issues among the community to police commissioner. They are the managers of the College - Spring city. 2009

18 Findings Most individuals surveyed believe police brutality does not exist in our community. Police do not abuse their power and perform a great service. People seem to not care how the job gets done as long as it gets done.

19 Solutions Statement Citizens who are engaged in their community will know how police perform their duties. Public responsibility to know what goes on in their neighborhoods and communities. Ultimately their tax dollars pay police wages.

20 Importance of Police Services Tax dollars pay police wages Community needs to know how police perform their duties. Citizens must plan and organize meetings with city council members.

21 Three Recommended Solutions 1) Solicit volunteers within the community to advise the police department. 2) Community partnership between police and people. 3) Appoint Representatives for each district of each district.

22 Recommended Solution 1 Solicit volunteers within the community to advise the police department. Establish leadership within the community to appoint representatives. Representatives are the middleman They serve to bring the community and the police department together.

23 Recommended Solution 2 Community partnership between police and people. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Distribute surveys to police and the community.

24 Recommended Solution 3 Appoint Representatives for each district of each city in Santa Cruz County. Hold City Hall meetings to appoint said representatives. Hold Bilingual meetings.

25 Criteria for selecting solutions 1) Most effective 2) Meets the needs of both community and police department. 3) Easiest and most cost effective.
