1 NOTICE OF SPRING PRIMARY AND SAMPLE BALLOTS FEBRUARY 20, 2018 OFFICE OF THE BROWN COUNTY CLERK TO THE ELECTORS OF BROWN COUNTY: Notice is hereby given of a spring primary election to be held in Brown County on the 20th day of February, 2018, at which the officers named below shall be nominated. The names of the candidates for each office, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office, each in its proper column, in the sample ballot provided. INFORMATION TO ELECTORS Upon entering the polling place, an elector shall state his or her name and address, show an acceptable form of photo identification and sign the poll book before being permitted to vote. If an elector is not registered to vote, an elector may register to vote at the polling place serving his or her residence, if the elector presents proof of residence in a form specified by law. Where ballots are distributed to electors, the initials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the elector shall retire alone to a voting booth and cast his or her ballot except that an elector who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the elector's minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the elector of the proper manner for casting a vote, but the official may not in any manner advise or indicate a particular voting choice. Where Optical Scan Voting is Used The elector shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the elector shall write in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote, and fill in the oval next to the write-in line. When using an electronic ballot marking device ( Automark ) to mark an optical scan ballot, the elector shall touch the screen at the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the elector shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. The vote should not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes' time shall be allowed inside a voting booth. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the elector in casting his or her vote may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. If the elector spoils an optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one elector. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the elector shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place. After Marking the Ballot After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it shall be inserted in the security sleeve so the marks do not show. The elector shall insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve, or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. The elector shall leave the polling place promptly. An elector may select an individual to assist in casting his or her vote if the elector declares to the presiding official that he or she is unable to read, has difficulty reading, writing or understanding English or that due to disability is unable to cast his or her ballot. The selected individual rendering assistance may not be the elector's employer or an agent of that employer or an officer or agent of a labor organization which represents the elector. 5 ACCEPTABLE PHOTO IDENTIFICATIONS A driver license receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT (valid for 45 days from date issued) An identification card receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT (valid for 45 days from date issued) A photo identification card issued by a Wisconsin accredited university or college, or technical college that contains the following: Provided by the Wisconsin Elections Commission For detailed information about the Voter Photo ID law, visit bringit.wi.gov. For other information on the Wisconsin Elections Commission, visit elections.wi.gov or call the W.E.C. Help Desk at 1866-VOTE-WIS or DO I NEED A SPECIAL VOTER ID CARD? There is not a separate Voter ID card. There are many forms of Photo ID, which you may already have, that can be used to vote. Anyone with a valid Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin state ID card, or any of the documents listed below, already has the photo ID they need for voting purposes. WHAT CAN I USE AS PHOTO ID TO VOTE? Date the card was issued Signature of student Expiration date no later than two years after date of issuance The university or college ID must be accompanied by a separate document that proves enrollment, such as a tuition fee receipt, enrollment verification letter, or class schedule The following photo IDs are acceptable for voting purposes, and can be unexpired or expired after the date of the most recent general election (currently, the November 8, 2016 election): The photograph must reasonably resemble the elector. A Wisconsin DOT-issued driver license, even if driving privileges are revoked or suspended A Wisconsin DOT-issued identification card Military ID card issued by the U.S. Uniformed Services A U.S. passport book or card A certificate of naturalization (that was issued not earlier than two years before the date of the election) An identification card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin Compiled by Sandra L. Elector s Photograph Elector s Name The elector s name must conform to the name on their voter registration; conform does not mean that the name must be identical to the name on the voter registration.
