GIRLGUIDING Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. Sarah Bourne, who is working to achieve her Queen s Guide Award, joined a small group to work on the Challenge for Girlguiding South West England. This is from Sarah: I found that UK Parliament Week offers Girlguiding members of all ages (5 25) an opportunity to learn about Parliament, politics and democracy. Learning that it is okay to have your own opinion and one that is different to others, that can be debated and respected, as you respect others. The Parliament Week Challenge empowers girls, teaching them about the history of women in Parliament, their roles and that #GirlsMatter. Most importantly, this Challenge encourages the members of Girlguiding to get involved in politics and Parliament Week, throw themselves into the challenges and to start thinking about what the UK Parliament means to them. There are 2607 Uniformed Groups taking part in #UKPW Girlguiding groups out of 2607 uniformed groups signed up

GgLP_TL_C #UKPW17 This year we re delighted to have partnered with six different Girlguiding regions: Anglia, South West, Ulster, North West, Midlands and London & South East. All members in these regions can claim a customised resource kit and an official UK Parliament Week badge, unique to their region. They ll also receive a certificate for all their efforts. 12 SCOUTS We re excited to announce our special partnerships with Scouts Cymru and the Scouts Foundation Northern Ireland. For the very first time Scouts in these nations will receive a customised resource pack, certificates and an official UK Parliament Week badge for taking part. 807 Scout groups out of 2607 uniformed groups signed up ScoutsCymru is delighted to be part UK Parliament Week being held between 13 and 19 November. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to take part in the fun by holding an event while they explore the work of UK Parliament and what it means to them. We are encouraging all our Groups and Units to sign up to UK Parliament Week and receive their UK Parliament Week kit especially created for Scouts in Wales. Malcolm Latham, Assistant Chief Commissioner Wales- Programme

UNIFORMED GROUPS Over 2600 other uniformed groups, like this one taking part! We ve created a fun badge for the numerous uniform organisations taking part in UK Parliament Week From Sea Cadets to Woodcraft Folk and everything in between this year all those beloinging to a uniformed youth organisation can claim a fun badge for taking part in UK Parliament Week. Boys Brigade Dunblane will be hosting a Q&A session with their local MSP. They are inviting along other uniformed youth organisations from their local area to give more youths a chance to get their voices heard. In their event, they hope to highlight the issues that are important to their members and showcase to their MSP what they do as an organisation that makes them gain a greater appreciation for these matters. Youth workers at the Boys Brigade are mainly volunteers from the community who feel passionate about inspiring their young members!

#UKPW17 Other uniformed groups taking part in UK Parliament Week Air Cadets [10] Royal Airforce [2] Adventurers [1] Army Cadet Force [5] Woodcraft Folk [1] Boy s Brigade [16] Sea Cadets [6] We have chosen to take part because we see on a regular basis that young people have very forthright opinions and although they don t always feel engaged or empowered directly, we want to give them a chance to put those opinions and actions directly to those people who represent them Fraser Boyd, Leader

Discover the UK Parliament at KidZania London! Wednesday 15 Friday 17 November UK Parliament Week is a fantastic opportunity to engage 4-14 year olds already experiencing the world of work at KidZania London with the UK Parliament. It will empower them to make their voices heard now and in the future and, perhaps, run the show themselves one day. Ger Graus, Head of Education, KidZania London

CHURCH OF ENGLAND This year the Church of England have partnered with UK Parliament Week to produce a resource to engage with churches in their dioceses. With 26 bishops of the Church of England sitting in the House, known as the Lords Spiritual, they read prayers at the start of each daily sitting and play a full and active role in the life and work of the House of Lords. As diocesan bishop and Convenor of the Lords Spiritual, I m keen that every UK citizen has the opportunity to understand the work of Parliament. Churches of all denominations can play a vital role in helping people to see how they belong in a parliamentary democracy and can take part in it. This Parliament Week resource provides a wonderful opportunity, and I commend it for widespread use. 19 Muslim Council of Britain Resource Booklet UK Parliament Week 1 MUSLIM COUNCIL OF BRITAIN The Muslim Council of Britain has for years promoted the active participation of Muslims in the democratic process. As the UK s largest national representative Muslim umbrella body with over 500 affiliated mosques, charities and schools, one of the MCB s roles is to encourage Muslim individuals and organisations to play a full and participatory role in public life. The MCB also urges Imams and community leaders to remind their mosque congregations on the significance of voting and voter turn-out as an important civic responsibility. Now in its 7th year, UK Parliament Week is a fantastic annual programme to encourage civic responsibility as well, by raising awareness about the important role of the Houses of Parliament in the functioning of our democracy. The MCB is proud to support UK Parliament Week by promoting it to our affiliates and co-producing our resource booklet for teachers and educationalist. So whatever your political views or affiliations, let us celebrate what democracy means in Britain today and find ever more innovative ways to engage our children ultimately the next generation of Britons with a deeper understanding of democracy too. 21 NORTH YORKSHIRE COUNCIL North Yorkshire Youth Voice Conference Young people attending the event will be able to take part in a number of workshops and have the opportunity to meet with three members of the Youth Parliament who represent the young people of North Yorkshire. They will also take part in a Q&A session with senior managers, decision makers and councillors to question them on policies and decisions that affect them. Other services who engage with young people will take part in an interactive market place giving young people the opportunity to talk to them about what they offer and how young people can engage with them. Events like this are an excellent way of sharing with others what is happening in their local areas. The event also gives young people the opportunity to meet others from towns and villages who they may not have met before, whilst more importantly giving them a platform to ensure local decision makers hear what young people want and what matters to them most in North Yorkshire. Lynn Hobson from our Community Outreach team delivering one of our community workshops to young people from the borough of North Yorkshire. 42 Local Authority events booked!

CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATION This year we have over 160 Civil Society Organisations register to take part! Gateway Chapel will be hosting a Join the Debate event for members of their youth group as well as 6 different youth organisations from their local area, Kent. The attendees will debate issues that matter to them and explore the differing views (of each political party) on these topics. By the end of the event, participants can see which political party their views align with the most. As an organisation, reaching out and connecting with our community based on our common interests is something that we love to do! We think that UK parliament week is a fantastic campaign that engages our youth in political matters that affect them. We think this is a great initiative that drives awareness and engagement across the youth in our country Whitney Oladeinde, Community Outreach Volunteer Members of the youth Group at Gateway Chapel

HIGH DOWN JUNIOR SCHOOL There has never been a more important time to engage people, particularly students, in democracy and Parliament. This is a golden opportunity to do so, and so do it! Ben Culverhouse Class Teacher Over 900 Primary Schools taking part in #UKPW17 A week-long whole-school celebration, where our 390 KS2 children learnt about the three parts of parliament and voting/democracy/ representation in the UK. We used Education Service resources, held a Skype session with Mr Speaker John Bercow, and were visited by local MP Liam Fox and several Portishead Town councillors. Benefits of being a UK Parliament Week partner include the resources, a big tick for the British Values box in the national curriculum, and the opportunity to make links with other local schools or organisations. It was also a unique and effective way to raise the profile of our school in the Portishead and North Somerset community. UK Parliament Week was a highly enjoyable and enriching experience for everyone involved, and a pleasure to organise. Ben Culverhouse Class Teacher

Children are innately curious, creative and imaginative. They embrace discovery and wonder. They are natural, intuitive learners that experience the world around them and express themselves through play. At the LEGO Group, we passionately believe that learning through play is an essential building block in developing emotional wellbeing and mental health, as it equips children with the skills that enable them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. These higher-order skills, ranging from creativity and critical thinking through to collaboration and problem-solving, enable children to engage with their surroundings, communities and society, helping them to become excellent and responsible citizens in tomorrow s world. We are delighted to be able to support this exciting opportunity as official partners in UK Parliament Week Our system of play has evolved throughout our 85-year history into a way of learning that stimulates reasoning, thinking creatively and working collaboratively. During the week, we will use this method of play to unleash a flurry of hands-on and minds-on creation, fun, togetherness, and a sharing of

ideas and solutions to help children to learn about democracy. We hope you will be able to join us, as in our eyes a playful experience is an inclusive one, even for those who may not think of themselves as being quite so young. After all, the qualities of curiosity and imagination should never stop being aspired to. We very much welcome this opportunity to help children to learn about democracy through play and to work together to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow. Marina Edwards Vice President & General Manager, UK & Ireland at the LEGO Group The LEGO Group. Used with permission.

FURTHER EDUCATION Stockport College Question Time A representative of all the major political parties will be present, through local councillors who will appear on a panel. The councillors will be scrutinised by our Student Council Forum. This forum will be made up of a cross section of our student body, who actively represent their peer groups in the college. The areas of questioning will be those that affect young people both locally and nationally, and will be derived from our participation in the Make your Mark campaign. The top areas of concern will be put to the panel and their answers put to the test. This will provide a platform for our young people to make an informed decision about which party they should support, and ultimately vote for in local and national elections. This event has the full support of our student body, linking in to the Make your Mark campaign where all our students will vote. Our student council will be present, and we expect a figure of around student councillors (1 per class) to be represented. Our college theatre is the venue, and the occasion will be attended by staff, students and senior management. Michelle Mclaughlin, Lead Learning Support Coordinator with members of the Student Council

#UKPW17 Stockport College is a Further Education college which services a wide and diverse demographic of students. As a learning establishment we are completely committed to promoting and enhancing our student s knowledge of the democratic process, and the freedoms of our society. The learner voice is key to fostering an informed and questioning society and we are therefore dedicated to provide Parliamentary Education as part of the fabric of the programme we offer. Students will be encouraged to take part in Student Council programmes to provide an insight into the workings of the Parliamentary process, and more locally the Stockport Council protocols and processes 59 Further Education Colleges taking part this year! Michelle McLaughlin, Lead Learning Support Coordinator

10 November 2017 Annual Sitting (House of Commons)

Every year, Members of the UK Youth Parliament kick off UK Parliament Week with their annual sitting in the House of Commons chamber, where they debate five topics voted for by year olds from across the UK in the Make Your Mark ballot. The annual sitting is a fantastic opportunity for Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) to use their elected voice to bring about social change and ensure meaningful representation of young people. UK Parliament Week is a brilliant way for MYPs to then carry on the conversation as they engage young people across the four nations with Parliament and empower them to have their voice heard and make a change. Zoë Cumberland, Youth Voice Manager at the British Youth Council
