1 Teaching notes Put students into pairs and give each pair a set of questions, cut into cards. Each pair takes turns to turn a card over and try to answer the question. If they aren t able to answer the question, the other person in the pair should have a go. For each question that they answer, students should add the card to their pile. When each question has been attempted, students should check their answers Page 1 of 5

4 Answers What is the capital of Northern Ireland? Belfast (Dublin is the capital of Ireland) In Bog Child, who are the Provos? The Provos are the Provisional IRA (Irish Republican Army. They fight to make Northern Ireland part of a United Ireland. What is semtex? Semtex is a type of explosive. It is soft and can be moulded in the hand like dough. What was the RUC? Until 2001 the police force in Northern Ireland was called The Royal Ulster Constabulary. Who was the British Prime Minister in 1981, when Bog Child is set? Margaret Thatcher Who was Bobby Sands? He died of starvation after going on hunger strike in prison. He felt that members of the IRA imprisoned should be treated like political prisoners. What is meant by the phrase The Troubles? The Troubles refers to the period in the 1960s-1990s when the violence on the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland was particularly horrific. What was The Maze (also called Long Kesh)? The Maze was a prison near Belfast. Many IRA terrorists served their sentences there. What is a bog body? A body that has been preserved instead of rotting away, usually because it was buried in peat. Why might people want to cut turf and steal it? Turf can be used as fuel Page 4 of 5
