They fight to make Northern Ireland part of a United Ireland. What is semtex? Semtex is a type of explosive. It is soft and can be moulded in the hand like dough. What was the RUC? Until 2001 the police force in Northern Ireland was called The Royal Ulster Constabulary. Who was the British Prime Minister in 1981, when Bog Child is set? Margaret Thatcher Who was Bobby Sands? He died of starvation after going on hunger strike in prison. He felt that members of the IRA imprisoned should be treated like political prisoners. What is meant by the phrase The Troubles? The Troubles refers to the period in the 1960s-1990s when the violence on the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland was particularly horrific. What was The Maze (also called Long Kesh)?
