Annotated Bibliography Primary Sources 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Jan. 22, 2013: Stand up for Abortion Rights! A Call to Action. YouTube. N.p., 3 Dec Web. 30 Jan This is a short film composed of clips from feminist and pro-choice rallies, as well as a segment condemning images from prolife rallies. I used the images from pro-life rallies to show the pro-life perspective on abortion through pictures. Unfortunately, the video was too long to use for the pro-choice rally segment. "Abortion Counseling Laws." Map. Abortion Counseling Laws. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb This map shows which states require a woman to go to counseling regarding her abortion. Some states who require counseling allow patients to complete this through the mail or by phone, while others require it to be done in person. I used this map to show different states' restrictions on abortion. Bankston, Holli. "...This is why I'm prolife. It's not a 'thing' it's a baby. It breathes & is a human." 20 Jan Tweet. I used this tweet, by Holli Bankston, to show a modern perspective on being pro-life. Blackmun, Harold Andrew, Justice. "Primary Documents: Roe v. Wade (1973)." University of Washington Department of History. Ed. Quintard Taylor, Jr. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Dec This is the decision of the Roe v. Wade trial, written by Justice Blackmun. I used this source for information on the members of the case and on the decision. This clearly shows what federal laws would be enacted as a result of the trial and how many states former laws would now be overruled.

Blosser, Aimee. "I'm #ProLife because if a person is pronounced dead when the heart stops beating, why aren't they pronounced alive after the heart starts?" 22 Jan Tweet. Aimee Blosser tweeted why she is pro-life. This is used as an example of a modern argument for the pro-life side of Roe v. Wade. Dasteel, Johanna, and John Jalsevac. " Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade Airs Anti-Obama Ad in Florida." Life Site News. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Dec This source is a video, and transcript of said video, released in 2012 by Randall Terry, a pro-life politician and former Democratic presidential candidate, regarding the issue of abortion and attacking Obama's pro-choice view. In this ad, Norma McCorvey, formerly Jane Roe in the Roe v. Wade trial, says she regrets ever participating in the case, was convinced by feminists to lie about being raped, and feels responsible for helping to legalize child killing. I used the audio from this video, as there were highly graphic and disturbing abortion images in it, to show how McCorvey changed her opinion after the trial. Elliott, Karen. "Court Overrules Texas Abortion Law." Dallas Morning News 23 Jan. 1973: n. pag. Web. 27 Jan This source is an article written for the Dallas Morning News newspaper explaining and reacting to the Roe v. Wade decision, published on January 23, The author, Karen Elliott, specifically says that this decision was highly controversial. I used this article to further explain the decision and show how even from the beginning, people recognized how controversial and influential the decision would be. Fausset, Richard. "A History of Violence on the Antiabortion Fringe." Los Angeles Times 1 June 2009: n. pag. Web. 3 Feb This article, written for the Los Angeles Times by Richard Fausset in 2009 explains different types of violence that antiabortion extremists

have used against abortion clinics. I used this source to help show some of the negative effects of the Roe v. Wade trial. Fielding, Waldo L., M.D. "Repairing the Damage, Before Roe." New York Times 3 June 2008: n. pag. Web. 3 Dec This essay by Dr. Waldo L. Fielding, published in the New York Times in 2008, exemplifies the horrors medical professionals saw as a result of illegal, pre Roe v. Wade abortions. Dr. Fielding attended to many patients who either attempted an abortion on themselves, or who attempted to receive an abortion from an unlicensed abortionist while working as an emergency room doctor in the 1940's and 50's. I used this article shows the dangers of illegal abortions and how horrible conditions were for women who wanted to receive an abortion but could not have it done safely, for legal, financial, or other reasons. Ginty, Molly M. "Life Before Roe v. Wade." Choice! Magazine 19 Jan. 2006: n. pag. Web. 4 Feb In this online article, Molly Ginty shares the stories of three people who either helped women receive illegal abortions or was close to someone who gave illegal abortions before the Roe v. Wade decision. One woman, Mildred Hanson, shared her story of her mom trying to help save a woman who had received an illegal abortion. I used Hanson's story to show the dangers women put themselves in trying to receive abortions before legality. " Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade Airs Anti-Obama Ad: Does Abortion Affect Your Vote for President?" Soda Head. N.p., 24 Oct Web. 27 Jan This is an image of Norma McCorvey, formerly Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, and a quote from her saying "I think it's safe to say that the entire abortion industry is based on a lie... I am dedicated to

spending the rest of my life undoing the law that bears my name". This image shows how McCorvey changed her view on abortion after the trial. Jane Roe with Gloria Allred. Washington Post. N.p., 22 Jan Web. 30 Jan This is an image of Jane Roe (Norma McCorvey) and Gloria Allred, on of Roe's lawyers, raising their arms in victory after winning the court case. Kunkle, Brett. "Why I Am Pro-Life." Stand to Reason Place. N.p., Web. 22 Jan In this blog entry, Brett Kunkle clearly explains why he is pro-life. He makes it clear that his view on abortion is not a result of, or influenced by, religion. Kunkle believes the fetus is a human-being from the moment it is conceived, and therefore abortion is murdering a human-being. I used this source to show another argument for being pro-life. "Mandatory Waiting Period Laws." Map. Abortion in the United States by State. Wikipedia, n.d. Web. 4 Feb This map shows which states have a mandated waiting period after a woman visits her doctor before she can receive an abortion, and whether this waiting period is less than or exceeds 24 hours. I used this map to show different states' restrictions on abortion. The New York Times, January 23, Roe Is Here for Good. Planned Parenthood, n.d. Web. 3 Feb This is a picture of The New York Times' front page the day after the Roe v. Wade decision (January 23, 1973) announcing the Supreme Court ruling. "Parental Notification and Consent Laws." Map. Abortion in the United States by State. Wikipedia, n.d. Web. 4 Feb This map shows how some states require notification and or consent from one or both parent(s) before a minor may receive an abortion. I used this map to show different states' restrictions on abortion.

"Percent of People Self-Identified as Liberal." Chart. Daily Kos. CartoonDiablo, n.d. Web. 22 Jan I used this chart, titled "Percent of People Self-Identified as Liberal", to show that around the time of Roe v. Wade, there was a large group of people in the United States who labeled themselves as being liberal. As liberals often demand more rights and freedoms, this made more people in support of giving women more rights over their body, and therefore more people supporting Roe in Roe v. Wade. Pro-Choice Activists. The Guardian News. N.p., 15 June Web. 2 Feb This is an image of pro-choice activists outside of the United States Supreme Court on the 39th anniversary (January, 2012) of the Roe v. Wade decision. "Roe v. Wade At 40: The Struggle to Save a Woman's Right to Choose." The Eternalist. N.p., 23 Jan Web. 30 Jan This image has a quote from Justice Blackmun's Opinion of the Court which clearly states the verdict of the trial. I used this as an introduction into my website. Roe V. Wade Jan. 23, CBS News. N.p., 20 Jan Web. 10 Dec This source is a segment of the CBS news from January 22nd, 1973 regarding the Roe v. Wade decision. I used audio clips of three segments of this news broadcast; a broadcaster talking about the decision, an interview with Dr. Alan Guttmacher (former President of Planned Parenthood) regarding the decision, and an interview with James McHugh (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) speaking of the decision. This was very useful as it gave me an unbiased, factual account of the decision, a pro-choice reaction to the decision, and a pro-life reaction to the decision.

Safe legal abortions for all women. Justice Watch. N.p., 21 Aug Web. 27 Jan This image shows a woman carrying a sign which says "SAFE LEGAL ABORTIONS for ALL WOMEN" during a march for women's' rights. Schweikert, David. "Why I Am Pro-Life: A True Story on the Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade." U.S. Congressman David Schweikert. N.p., Web. 23 Jan In this source, former U.S. Congressman David Schweikert discusses why he is pro-life. Schweikert's mother contemplated abortion, but decided instead to put her child up for adoption. Had it not been for her change of heart, Schweikert would not be here today, causing him to be pro-life. I used this webpage as an example of someone's reasoning for being pro-life. Short, Michael. S.F. abortion rally shows 40-year split. San Francisco Gate. N.p., 26 Jan Web. 30 Jan This image shows Susan Witka, a pro choice rally member, holds a coat hanger with the words "Never Again" on it at the Pro-Choice Rally in San Francisco to mark the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. The coat hanger refers to women using coat hangers to perform abortions on themselves before legality. I used this image to represent pre Roe v. Wade abortions, because of the coat hanger symbol. Stumpe, Joe, and Monica Davey. "Abortion Doctor Shot to Death in Kansas Church." New York Times 31 May 2009: n. pag. Web. 3 Feb In this The New York Times article, Joe Stumpe and Monica Davey write about Dr. George Tiller, an abortion doctor's, murder in Kansas. Dr. Tiller was shot in his church by a pro-life extremist who wanted to punish him for performing abortions, particularly late in a woman's pregnancy. This article was used to show the horrible extent of the violence caused by some antiabortion extremists. "38 Years of Roe v. Wade." Reproductive Rights. N.p., 10 Jan Web. 3 Dec This source is an article on the Center for Reproductive Rights website containing thirteen

men and women s opinions on the importance and impact of the Roe v. Wade decision. Each person discusses how the decision is significant to themselves as individuals. I used this source to show how Roe v. Wade made an impact on people directly and not just through laws. I used six of these people's opinions which stood out most to me to show different perspectives on being pro-choice. "Ultrasound Laws." Map. Abortion in the United States by State. Wikipedia, n.d. Web. 4 Feb This map shows states' laws about whether it is mandatory to perform and/or display and ultrasound prior to abortion. I used this map to show different states' restrictions on abortion. "What Was the Legacy of Roe v. Wade? Letters to the Editor for Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013." Daily News Los Angeles 27 Jan. 2013: n. pag. Web. 27 Jan This article in the Daily News Los Angeles is a compilation of "Letters to the Editor" about the legacy of Roe v. Wade. I used one letter, by Mary Gould, from this. In this, she talks about how she feels legalizing abortion empowers women. I quoted her in my section about how one of the turning points of the Roe v. Wade trial was how it gave women a sense of empowerment. When Abortion Was Illegal: Untold Stories (1992). Dir. Dorothy Fadiman. Fadiman Social Documentaries. N.p., n.d. Web. 3 Feb This documentary, directed by Dorothy Fadiman, shows the horrors of illegal abortions before the time of Roe v. Wade through factual narration and primary accounts. I used the audio of a woman named Lana talking about the illegal abortion she received in the 1930s. While Lana's abortion was successful, it was a painful and traumatizing experience for her. I used this to show the dangers of illegal abortions, which emphasizes why allowing women to get legal, safe abortions is so important.

Wilkinson, Abigail. "Why Are We Pro-Life?" Catholic Exchange 14 Jan. 2013: n. pag. Web. 22 Jan In this article for the online magazine Catholic Exchange Abigail Wilkinson explains her reasons for being pro-life, her main reason being she regards fetuses as being people, and therefore believes abortion is murder. I this article to show a modern, pro-life perspective. Secondary Sources "Abortion Right." Glogster. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Feb This is an image that says "Abortion is a personal decision not a legal debate" showing why some people are pro-choice. "Cases Argued Roe v. Wade (1973)." Oyez. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Feb This is an image of Robert C. Flowers, Henry Wade's Assistant Attorney General who argued the Roe v. Wade case. "Family Planning Empowers Women." Blogspot. N.p., n.d. Web. 3 Feb This image states "When do you know a woman is empowered? When she can make her own decision about, if and when, she has children". I used this source on my page talking about how the Roe v. Wade decision empowered women. "Freedom Means Choice." Peace Project. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Feb This image states "Freedom means choice" basically meaning that women in America cannot be completely free unless they are allowed to make choices about their reproductive health. I used this source to depict a pro-choice attitude. Jackman, Jennifer, Christine Onyango, and Elizabeth Gavriles. "Chart 1: Percentage of Clinics Experiencing at Least One Type of Violence, " Graph. Feminist Majority Foundation. N.p., 21 Jan Web. 3 Feb This graph shows that half of abortion

clinics experienced violence in 1993 and 1994, but violence dropped and less than a quarter of clinics experienced violence in I used this graph to show that a larger portion of abortion clinics experienced violence from antiabortion extremists throughout the 1990's. Lee, Renee C. "Henry Wade, District Attorney, 86." Slick. N.p., 1 Mar Web. 2 Feb In this online webpage, Renee Lee gives a brief biography on Henry Wade's legal career, discussing his involvement in the Roe v. Wade trial and Sarah Weddington, on of Roe's lawyer's, opinion on him. I used this source for information about Wade, as well as a quote from Weddington expressing her relief when she discovered it would not be Wade, but an assistant, arguing in the trial. "Maternal death from abortion." Graph. Christian Medical Comment. N.p., 17 June Web. 30 Jan This bar graph shows the number of women who died from legal and illegal abortions, as well as spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) per million maternities from The graph showed that deaths from illegal abortions were practically eliminated by 1979 and deaths from all abortions reduced by roughly 50% from 1970 to 1973, continuing to decrease through the rest of the years included. I used this graph to show how Roe v. Wade improved the safety of abortions. "Msgr. James T. McHugh." United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb This is a photograph of James McHugh of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. He was interviewed by CBS News about the decision of Roe v. Wade, so I used this image to show who was talking during this audio segment. Norma McCorvey. LifeNews. N.p., 16 June Web. 30 Jan This is a picture of Norma McCorvey, Jane Roe of the Roe v. Wade trial.

"Photograph of Alan F. Guttmacher, 1973." Alan Guttmacher. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb This is a photograph of Dr. Alan Guttmacher, former president of Planned Parenthood. Dr. Guttmacher was interviewed by CBS News about the Roe v. Wade decision, so I used this image to show who was talking during the audio segment from the news. "Politicians and My Body Bumper Sticker." Zazzle. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Feb This is an image of a bumper sticker sold by zazzle.com which reads "Why do Politicians think My body is Their business?" which shows the view many share about abortion being a personal matter which should not be determined by law. "Prochoice." FreakOutNation. N.p., 30 May Web. 2 Feb This is an image that says "77% of anti-abortion leaders are men. 100% of them will never be pregnant." The significance behind this is that the majority of leaders against abortion would never need an abortion, so they do not have the right to decide whether or not it is legal. I used this image to show a pro-choice perspective. "Pro Choice Case for the iphone 4." Zazzle. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Feb This is an image of an iphone case sold by zazzle.com which reads "If it's not your body it's not your decision". Many pro-choice activists believe that women should be able to make decisions regarding their body without legislative input, which is represented in this image. Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice. ZeldaLily. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Feb This image, of two bulls ramming horns, one entitled "Pro-Life" the other "Pro-Choice" is used to exemplify the battle between the two opposing viewpoints. "Regulations around Abortion Providers in the U.S." Map. The California Report. N.p., 22 Jan Web. 2 Feb This map shows states' restrictions regarding abortion providers. Some allow non-physicians to perform certain types of abortions, others specifically

prohibit NPs, CNMs, and Pas from performing abortion, and others simply state only physicians my perform abortions. I used this graph to give an example of different restrictions which states can impose. "Roe vs. Wade." Modern American History. N.p., 9 Feb Web. 22 Jan This source consisted of an extremely brief summary of what the decision of Roe v. Wade was, which I used as an introduction to my website. It also contained an image of woman with the words "my mind, my body, my choice" written on her. I used this image to represent a pro-choice mindset. "Roe vs Wade Bumper Stickers." Zazzle. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Feb This is an image of a bumper sticker sold by zazzle.com which reads "Roe v. Wade was not the beginning of abortion... It was the end of women dying as a result of illegal abortions." While some women did still die from illegal abortions after Roe v. Wade, this image explains how the Roe v. Wade decision was a turning point. "Roe v. Wade." United States History. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Jan This webpage discussed the background, trial, decision, ramifications, and controversy of Roe v. Wade. While all areas contained good information, I mainly used the part focused on the background and events leading up to the trial and decision. This page discussed the "hippie generation" and what role that played in the decision, which was very helpful to the historical context page of my website. "Roe v. Wade: What Does It Mean?" NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota. National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, n.d. Web. 3 Feb This webpage, published by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) briefly discusses the meaning of the Roe v. Wade decision. It contained a useful quote regarding

how legalizing abortion increases opportunities for women, which I included in my section on how the decision empowers women. "The State of Roe v. Wade in 9 Charts." Washington Post. N.p., Jan Web. 7 Dec This collection of charts and maps representing effects of Roe v. Wade, published on the Washington Post website, was useful for clearly displaying ideas in ways other than text. I used two charts from this source, one showing general abortion laws in states before abortion was nationally legalized, and another charting the amount of restrictions states have imposed between 1985 and 2011.
