Ideogram Unit 1- Displaced People TK G.7A Key Concepts Change Related Concepts Language and literature Genres Other: Identity Global Contexts Identities-and-relationships Identities and relationships Inquiry Questions Factual What are the elements of historical fiction? What factors lead people to leave their homes? Conceptual How does displacement change personal identity? Debatable Do external or internal factors have more influence on personal identity? 1

Refugees What are refugees? How do they become refugees? A refugee is an illegal migrant who has escaped from their country because of: 1. Political Opinion It s really funny. At that age I didn t even know different religions existed. We were all the same. (Jasmina) After the outbreak of war, in April 1940, we left Geneva with our family only to become part of the disordered refugee crowds fleeing across France from the German army. (Jasmina) 2.War 3.Religion 4. Membership in a social group such as GLBT 5. Persecution (Broadhead, Sharonne. Urban refugees in Bangkok Refugee Children in Immigration Detention Children 4 Children in Detention Campaign. KIS international School, Bangkok Sept Speech.) figure 1 A young woman, facing the same problems as Jasmina, as a refugee! "Home Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Rockford." Home Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Rockford. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Sept

Refugee Continued Life as a refugee is very difficult. You do not have comfort, privacy, money, or enough food to everyday. You live in this tiny refugee camp. A refugee camp serves as a temporary shelter for refugees, IDPs and asylum seekers. People come everyday, in a crowded bus, with refugees moving in and out everyday. The facilities in a refugee camp include: -An administrative headquarters to coordinate services -Sleeping accommodations (tents) -Hygiene Facilities (although they are not very clean and private) -clinics, hospital, medics -Food distribution -Security Figure 2 Famous refugee camp from Rwandans located in -Education Centers (at times if the host country permits) Congo "Refugee Camp." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 10 Mar Web. 06 Oct

Refugee Continued The External/Internal Forces that change a refugee s identity External Forces: Some external forces that change a refugee are natural disasters, membership in a social group, political opinion, war, fear of persecution and religion. You will probably be affected by them and you may get changed by some internal forces. ( "Refugees:Telling Their Story." UNHCR. UNHCR, Web. 26 Sept Internal Forces: Internal forces come from within you. It is your emotion, choice and experience. For example if you see your dad getting shot right in front of you, you will definitely change. Your choice (for example) to become a thief for you family may also affect your identity. ( "Refugees:Telling Their Story." UNHCR. UNHCR, Web. 26 Sept I saw my father, taken away, with me helpless Ruza Belovan (this is an example of internal forces) I settled in nicely in Australia, there wasn t so much racism and discrimination unlike Croatia Jasmina (this is an example of external forces)

Refugees in non-fiction Refugee Continued Factual (referenced from Jasmina s story) Are in danger of being caught by law They are discriminated against I had to face many problems, but without those problems,i wouldn t have discovered Australia Jasmina. Have the chance to settle in a new place At times transported to detention centers Take basic supplies such as passports (papers), clothes Have to learn a new language When a refugee escapes by plane, they are in more danger of being caught Figure 3 This is a picture of Jasmina graduating in Australia UNHCR. Refugees Tell Their Stories (n.d.): n. pag. UNHCR. U. Web. Jasmina was a victim of displacement. She was from Croatia and was living a very happy life until Germany and Italy started bombing them. Desperate, her and her mother escaped throughout Europe, leaving their dad. Even though Jasmina was still regretting that choice, she finally settled down in Australia and lived a happy life. Jasmina was always afraid when she first arrived. She had heard about Australia s strict policy, but their kind people. She would always avoidthe police. She learnt English rather quickly and graduated from University. (UNHCR. Refugees Tell Their Stories (n.d.): n. pag. UNHCR. U. Web.)

IDPs IDPs are similar to refugee and can be misinterpreted at times. An IDP is a refugee but has not yet crossed an international border. Therefore, they cannot seek asylum. An IDP s life is worst than a refugee because when they are inside the border, they have less options because refugees have options to settle into a new place, unknown, but IDPs will probably be chased as long as they are alive. ( "UNHCR Global Trends 2013." UNHCR News. UNHCR, 20 June Web. 26 Sept Questions 1. How are IDPs helped? There is an organization (UNHCR) that will help displaced people. They provide IDPs with basic supplies such as water, food, shelter. Sometimes, the country where the IDPs lives in may help them. 2. What causes and IDP to be displaced? An IDP is often displaced because of natural disasters. They are also displaced because of the same reasons as a refugee. 3. Why do IDPs choose to stay in their country? This is because they may still be clinging to hope that their house can be rebuild and they can go back home. Or they are just too tired to walk to another country s border.

Figure 4 This is The clay marble Written by Minfong Ho Ho, Minfong. "The Clay Marble." Goodreads. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Oct IDPs continued Personal Connection: This book was extremely interesting. It was about Dara and her family, escaping from Pol Pot s communist ideals. I enjoyed reading the book as the author managed to show the conflict between Dara and her family very clearly and dramatically. It really showed how IDPs suffer. "I haven't had much to eat for days now. You know how it is. If you don't have a family, nobody bothers to feed you. So what do I do? Steal. Dara said. IDPs in Fiction Fiction (Referenced from The Clay Marble ) Have to steal food Travel with their family Leave their home Travel on foot or with basic transportation Travel with clothes and basic cooking equipments Live in tents at a refugee camp Share food and cooking with other people

Asylum seekers Asylum seekers are refugees who are seeking asylum from another country. Asylum is protection from persecution, war and events that is happening in the country that they have escaped from. ("Q&A: Migrants and Asylum in the EU." BBC News Europe. BBC, n.d. Web. 6 Oct )! ) Figure 5 Countries where asylum seekers go to most Peter, Laurence. "Q&A: Migrants and Asylum in the EU." BBC News Europe. BBC, n.d. Web. 6 Oct ! Countries in Europe are rather popular for Asylum seekers. This is because unlike other countries, countries in Europe are more helpful and less strict than other countries. ("Q&A: Migrants and Asylum in the EU." BBC News Europe. BBC, n.d. Web. 6 Oct )

Stateless People Stateless people are people who do not have a status in their in their country. That means that they are not accepted as a citizen in that country. This is the beginnings of many problems. Without a citizenship they are face many problems such as no education, no job which means that their future will be problematic. Children without education cannot get a job, but if the the children does not have citizenship, they can t get a job anyways. ("Nowhere to Call "home"" Economist. Economist, 17 May Web. 6 Oct ) This is the largest numbers of recognized displaced people in the world from Myanmar is number 1, with 800,000+ stateless people. Figure 6 The top countries with Stateless People "Nowhere to Call "home"" Economist. Economist, 17 May Web. 6 Oct <http%3a%2f%2fwww.economist.com %2Fnews%2Finternational%2F changing-faceworlds-non-citizens-nowhere-call-home>..!

PA (Freeze Frame) How do I display the change in identity of the displaced person through a performance? I can display the change using many things. I can use special effects (in this case black and white), I can use costumes, and I can show this using my facial expressions. In this picture, we were trying to show the word refugee without using props (like a hat). The costume Sai was wearing still helped as it showed her status as a refugee while for me, I did not have a costume, but my expression shows. The slides are also trying to show the loneliness of being a refugee. We did this by starting with 3 people, 2 people, and then 1, alone.

PA ( Tableux ) In both of the pictures, I tried to portray the loneliness of refugee. In the first picture, I took a picture of myself, emotionless with the word home. This is to symbolize that all refugees want to go home. They miss home. The second picture has the word Lost written on my eyes. My eyes are not straight, to show my fear of the unknown world.
