Dr. served as the Director of Foreign Policy and National Security Program and Senior Research Fellow at the Asan Institute from 2011 to He was also an assistant professor at American University's School of International Service in Washington D.C., Freeman Assistant Professor of Korean Studies at Williams College, MA and Post-Doctoral Fellow at Wellesley College, MA. His research is focused on the interplay between nationalism and regional security including island disputes and historical reconciliation in East Asia, anti-americanism, the U.S.-Korea Alliance, and North Korea. His recent publications include Japan in Crisis: What It Will Take for Japan to Rise Again? (co-edits with T. J. Pempel, New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and The U.S.-South Korea Alliance: Local, Regional, and Global Dimensions, Asian Politics & Policy, vol. 8, no. 1, January 2016, pp He has been interviewed and quoted widely in the broadcast media including Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Financial Times, The Washington Post, CNN, BBC, NHK World, Mainichi Shimbun, The Strait Times Channel News Asia (Singapore), Voice of America, Al Jazeera English, and CCTV.
