The Domestic Politics of U.S. Foreign Policy DISSERTATION Party Polarization in the U.S. House of Representatives: Changes in Issues, Voters, or Representatives? (Defended December 18, 2000) The dissertation examined three possible explanations for the increase in partisanship in the U.S. House of Representatives: (1) a change in the congressional agenda, such that issues that divided the parties have become more pronounced, (2) a change in selection of representatives, such that district ideology has become more significant in the election of party members to Congress, or (3) a change in representative behavior, such that representatives are more responsive to their party and individual factors than to their constituents. The dissertation indicates that the majority of change in partisan polarization is attributable to changes in representative behavior and candidate selection.
