Resources you can provide: (Eg. Office space, computer, access to telephone) We can offer office space. Students will need to bring their own laptops. Most communication will be done online via and social media. If they need access to a telephone, we can provide access to one, but the use of a telephone will be unlikely in this placement. 5. Resources you would need: (Eg. Office location for students to work in such as space at St. Thomas, computers, telephone, etc.) N/A. 6. Other information you would like us to know: From the Marche Mondiale du Femme website: "The March is a global social movement that aims to eliminate the causes of poverty and violence against women. This year s theme is Freedom for our bodies, our land and our territories. This global feminist movement brings together diverse groups, including women s groups, unions, anti-poverty groups, Indigenous activists, international solidarity groups and many others. Since the first March in 2000, activists have organized local, national and global marches, hundreds of workshops and actions and lobbying of governments and international organizations." The Fredericton committee kicked off its 2015 organizing by holding a rally called, "Women on the March Until We are All Free: Rally for Equality and Solidarity" on April 24, The rally brought together diverse groups such as the Fredericton Youth Feminists, the NB Coalition for Pay Equity, CUPE NB, Fredericton Gender Minorities Group, Reproductive Justice NB, Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network, Phylomene Zangio on immigrant rights, among others. Representatives from each political party spoke at the event. The committee, largely based in Fredericton but with participation in different parts of the province, meets every two weeks and is aiming to increase its diversity and numbers in planning the march. Previous marches held in Fredericton in 2000, 2005 and 2010 were attended by hundreds of people and have involved marches and workshops. TEL: (506) FA X: (506)

School of Social Work, Fredericton, NB CANADA E3B 5G3 IMPORTANT NOTES: Research: If your project includes research involving humans through the use of a survey, questionnaire or interviews, then the method employed must be reviewed by the St. Thomas REB (Research Ethics Board) and approved for use by the students. This should be completed prior to the beginning of placement or very early during the field placement. Project expenses: Any cost incurred by the students in carrying out the project should normally be reimbursed by the agency, unless otherwise negotiated. Costs can include transportation required to complete the project; production of reports, long distance calls, or any supplies required for the successful completion of the project. Nature of the project: There is an expectation that the work opportunities provided to the students should match the project description that your agency submits for our consideration. If and when the nature of the project changes, we should be advised as soon as possible, in order to provide the students with accurate information about the projects available for their social action field placement. TEL: (506) FA X: (506)

Description of Project: We anticipate that the work actually done by the students will reflect this description, which students which use to guide their choices of field placement. Please provide a brief summary of the project, including the project purpose and the kind of activities involved. The purpose of this project is to have the students take a major role in organizing the promotions and communications for the World March of Women event in Fredericton, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, Students will be expected to take a major role in the public and media outreach of the event. This includes creating a website, maintaining social media outlets, writing media advisories and media releases, organizing events before the march that promote the march, designing and putting up posters, creating and distributing flyers, requesting the support of political parties and organizations for the march's demands, archiving media, among other public and media outreach activities. Prior to the federal election, students will organize an activity that engages students and community members on where each candidate stands on women's issues that will be highlighted in the march. After the event on Oct. 17, students will create a policy brief for the Minister responsible for Women's Equality that summarizes the key issues made by participants at the march and invites the Minister to act on the recommendations by the committee and march participants. What is the goal of the project in terms of advocacy or social change? The goal of the project is to create awareness and mobilize people from across New Brunswick in support of the 2015 World March of Women's objectives of eliminating the structural causes of poverty and violence against women, creating political, economic and social change. The movement centers around globalizing solidarity, equality, the respect and recognition of diversity, and the strength of alliances between progressive social movements. How do you intend to achieve this goal through which strategies and steps in the social action process? What actions will be undertaken? We intend to achieve this goal by having the students engage in organizing and promoting the World March of Women event in Fredericton and having them engage in political activism by arranging and participating in a meeting with the Minister responsible for Women's Equality, others from the Women's Equality Branch and relevant agencies with the demands of those involved in the event. The following actions will be taken to achieve the goals of the placement: Media/public outreach activities Creating a website Maintaining social media outlets Writing media advisories, media releases and/or commentaries Organizing events before the march that promote the march

Designing and putting up posters Creating and distributing flyers Archiving news articles, photographs and other media from the event. Political activities Organizing an activity in advance of the federal election that engages students and community members on women's issues that will be highlighted in the march. Requesting the support of political parties and organizations for the march's demands, among other promotional activities Creating a policy brief for the Minister responsible for Women's Equality, Women's Equality Branch and other relevant agencies that summarizes the key issues made by participants at the march and invites the Minister to act on the recommendations by the committee and march participants. Coming up with other ideas for political activities with collaboration from the committee. What kinds of opportunities will students have to learn about and engage with the media in this project? Students will have the opportunity to draft media advisories, media releases and/or commentaries as well as distribute them prior to and at the march. Media will likely be present at the march and the students may get to experience media scrums with the committee's media spokespeople. What kinds of opportunities will the students have to gain exposure to political interventions, e.g., to develop strategies to engage decision makers, or to lobby politicians or decisionmakers directly. Organizing an activity in advance of the federal election that engages students and community members on women's issues that will be highlighted in the march. Requesting the support of political parties and organizations for the march's demands, among other promotional activities. Creating a policy brief for the Minister responsible for Women's Equality, Women's Equality Branch and other relevant agencies that summarizes the key issues made by participants at the march and invites the Minister to act on the recommendations by the committee and march participants. Coming up with other ideas for political activities with collaboration from the committee. What kind of opportunities will the students have to interact or engage with service users or the Social Action Project s target group? The 2015 World March of Women will involve people who are affected by structural inequality and violence. The placement is more focused on advocacy and awareness than on directly interacting with service users.

Other information you wish students to know or criteria/requirements for students who may be in a group working with you: It would be an asset for the students to be bilingual, however, it is not a requirement.
