2 CENTRE FOR STUDIES CRITICAL INSIGHT ON CHANGE HURON CENTRE FOR STUDIES The only academic unit of its kind in Canada, Huron s Centre for Global Studies provides a truly interdisciplinary experience for engagement with the world. We prepare students to be Leaders with Heart in an interconnected world. Students engage the characteristic forces of globalization mobility, inequality and social innovation through rigorous interdisciplinary study. We emphasize strong skills in analysis, communication and original research. Our courses and programs are challenging and prepare our graduates for careers and fields of study that demand critical understanding of complexity, change, social justice and equality. COLLABORATIVE STREAMS OF STUDY Global Gender Studies Study the stakes of gendered identities and the gendering of bodies and social groups on political, cultural, legal and economic registers. Investigate the interrelated issues of women s studies, sexuality, queer studies, feminism and studies in masculinity. Global Health Studies Examine the practices and principles of health promotion, environmental factors and health, and health issues in marginalized populations. Excellent preparation for careers in humanitarianism and community development.

5 BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Recent research and community-based learning projects at the Centre for Global Studies have explored: World Farmers: Working with the London-based NGO World Farmers, students documented the development and purpose of this grassroots organization s work. Students interviewed the farmers about the social, economic and communitybased impacts of producing food for household consumption, for community meals and for market. The result was a full-colour booklet that the World Farmers can use to promote their work. WUSC Public Education Event: In partnership with Huron s local committee of the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), CGS students organized an event entitled Refugees Welcome: A Public Education Event, to increase the visibility of the work WUSC does related to youth development, education, community empowerment and reducing barriers to education. This event featured a keynote address and workshop on inclusive humanitarianism. RECENT STUDENT RESEARCH TOPICS: Globalizing Opposition to Land Grabbing Fair Trade and Alternative Forms of Capitalism Sustainable Living and Climate Change The Impact of Being Labelled a Refugee Small-Scale Coffee Farmers and the Global Market Making Place in Crisis: Labour and Integration People with Disabilities: The Failure of Development Agencies Refugee Settlement in London Community Development and Activism Through Bicycle Pathways MY HURON EXPERIENCE At Huron, you learn to always ask, Why is an idea being presented in this light? What are the sources? You gain the ability to look at what s happening and see different biases based on who s speaking. I ve learned to discern a large amount of information, summarize it and critically analyze it. Leadership with Heart for me means understanding where you fit and how you can contribute. You don t have to be the loudest voice to make a difference. You re supporting a community and everyone contributes in their own way. TREVOR SOOKRAJ WHERE DO OUR GRADS GO?
