1 PRESS RELEASE: 1 st Workshop of the SEE-ITS: Intelligent Transport Systems in South East Europe project in Budapest, 21-22/03/2013. Project funded by the South East Europe Transnational Cooperation Programme under priority Axis 3: Improvement of accessibility, Area of intervention: Develop strategies to tackle the digital divide On March 21 st and 22 nd, 2013, the first SEE-ITS project workshop took place in Budapest, Hungary. The title of the event was MOVING TOWARDS AN INTEGRATED EUROPE: EU ITS DIRECTIVE FOR AVAILABILITY OF TRANSPORT DATA and its main focus was the first priority area of the EU Directive on ITS deployment (2010/40/EU) related to the optimal use of road, traffic and travel data. The event was co-organized by the Hungarian Transport Administration and CERTH-HIT and was held in the premises of KKK in Buda. Mrs Dorota Szeligowska, representative of the European Commission, DG Mobility and Transport, Unit C3 "Intelligent Transport Systems" gave a key note speech providing information on the guidelines for Urban ITS deployment, a product of Urban ITS expert Group and mentioning that she hopes SEE-ITS project results will integrate the activities mentioned in EU Directive for ITS deployment in SEE area. Mr Pierpaolo Tona, project manager of ERTICO and coordinator of COMPASS4D project, gave also a keynote speech presenting the transport network for ITS that ERTICO manages to create and elaborated on quality issues on traffic and travel data. The Keynote speeches also included Mr Lajos Szűcs, President of ITS Hungary Association, presentation on the Hungarian ITS strategy and the reading of Mr Zoltán Schváb s, Deputy State Secretary for Infrastructure of the Hungarian Ministry of National Development speech stressing issues regarding cross-border cooperation and financing. The event started with the welcome speeches of Mrs Roberta Calcina representative of JTS of the SEE transnational cooperation program and SEE- ITS project officer, Mr. Simon Atila, Deputy General Director of KKK and Dr

2 Evangelos Mitsakis, researcher of CERTH-HIT. During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to receive detailed information about the current status of ITS deployment in the participating South East Europe Countries as well as their future 5-year planning for further deployment of ITS applications in their regions. In the session related to the public authorities expectations on optimal use of data invited speakers from Hungary as well as from Austria and Netherlands, described successful practices on traffic data management, stressed the open issues that act as drawbacks in the optimal use of these data and provided possible solutions and possible sustainable models for the future. As regards the private stakeholders perspective on the optimal data management, the invited speakers from Hungary, Netherlands, Italy and Greece that represented private companies closely related to traffic data management, presented cutting-edge technologies that are already being used in this sector, they elaborated on their views regarding optimal management of the data and pointed out the various difficulties that exist and how these difficulties can be overcome. Tanya Uzunova ITS Bulgaria Bulgaria Aims of the SEE-ITS project The SEE-ITS project aims to develop an institutional and technical framework, through which SEE organizations and countries can harmonize ITS specifications and define generic collaboration models. Policy guidelines, such as the newly published EC ITS Directive will serve as the main basis for all project activities. Furthermore, seven targeted ITS demonstrations will take place within the project, in order to assess the benefits and the impacts of harmonized and interoperable ITS deployment throughout the SEE area. SEE-ITS aims to establish a permanent cooperation framework for ITS activities in SEE, through expert groups and stakeholders panels, as well as through the organization of thematic workshops and conferences in Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
