1 Your vote counts New Brunswick General Election 2018 VOTE HERE VOTEZ ICI

2 Message from the Chief Electoral Officer On September 24, 2018, New Brunswickers go to the polls to elect their next provincial government. Over the next month, electors will no doubt be inundated with a range of messages from a variety of different parties and candidates who will be trying to convince you they should get your vote. In this age of increased social media activity, it is also quite likely you will come across information created by groups, organizations, and individuals attempting to influence your opinion on how you should cast your vote. I encourage all New Brunswickers to educate and arm yourselves with the facts. Apply your own critical thinking when it comes to evaluating what you hear about what a party stands for or a position they have taken on an issue that is important to you. Take the time to visit the parties websites, review their platforms and read up on what trusted sources are saying about the issues in this election. When it comes to information about how, when and where you will vote in this election, I encourage you to get your facts directly from Elections New Brunswick. We are the trusted source for information as it relates to the voting procedures available as you prepare to vote. Most importantly, I encourage all New Brunswickers eligible to vote in the September 24, 2018, election to cast a ballot to ensure your voice is heard in this important democratic process. Kimberly Poffenroth Chief Electoral Officer 2018 New Brunswick General Election Advance Polls Saturday, September 15 Monday, September 17 Election Day Monday, September 24 Polls are open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Returning Office Voting Returning Offices are open six days a week up to and including Election Day. Monday-Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm.

3 Voting in Provincial Elections Voters List If you have voted in previous elections in NB, you are likely already on the voters list. To get added to the voters list you must first meet the qualifications to vote and provide one or more pieces of ID that between them show your name, current address and signature. (A New Brunswick driver s license contains all three and is the ideal piece of identification). Other options may include: lease agreements, utility bills, student IDs, other documentation that provides the above three requirements, or having a friend already on the voters list vouch for your residency. If you need to add your name, correct or update your personal information, you may contact the local Returning Office or you can make the change when you go to the polling stations to vote. You can also call Elections NB to update your personal information. Everyone who is on the voters list will be mailed a Voter Information Card during the election telling them the address of their polling stations as well as the dates and times of advance and ordinary polling stations. What happens at the polling station? When you first arrive, an election worker will greet you and ask you if you have brought your Voter Information Card and if the information on it is correct. If the information on your card is accurate, the worker will send you to see the voters list officer. That worker will ask you to state your name and address. Their job is to find your name on the voters list and strike it off. Once that is done, they will direct you to the ballot issuing officer. If the information on your Voter Information Card needs to be updated for whatever reason, or if you need to be added to the voters list, you will be sent to the poll revision officer. If you must be added to the voters list you must show identification with your name, address and signature. Once that is done, they will direct you to the ballot issuing officer. The ballot issuing officer will prepare your ballot, explain how to mark your ballot and direct you to the voting screens. After you finish marking your ballot, place it back inside the black secrecy sleeve, and go to the tabulation machine. The tabulation machine officer will verify the ballot issuing officer s initials are visible, and invite you to feed your ballot into the machine face down. The tabulation machine officer can help you do this, and can answer any questions should the machine have issues when depositing your ballot. Congratulations, you have successfully voted! Qualifications to Vote A person is qualified to vote in a provincial election if he or she: is a Canadian citizen; will be eighteen years of age on or before polling day; has been or will have been a resident in the Province for a period of at least 40 days immediately before the election; and will be living in the electoral district on Election Day. On September 24th VOTE!

4 Special Ballots Special Ballots are a means for electors to cast a ballot if they are unable to vote during the advance polls or on Election Day. Special Voting Officers can bring ballots to the homes of those electors who are unable to attend the ordinary or advance polls due to illness or incapacity. A voter from one electoral district can also use a Special Ballot to vote from elsewhere in the province for a candidate in the place where they normally live. Special Ballots are also used for electors who are in nursing homes, special care homes, federal or provincial correctional facilities or patients in the hospital. Accommodation and Accessibility Elections New Brunswick offers a variety of options for voters with a physical or cognitive disability to vote and to mark a ballot. Elections NB strives to ensure that the buildings it uses during elections are accessible and can accommodate the needs of voters with various challenges. We provide various supports at our Returning Offices and at the polling stations to assist and encourage electors with special needs to vote. We have a number of technical solutions that provide additional voting options. Tools for accommodation include: Audio Vote with Braille and sip & puff option Sign language interpretation Magnifiers Braille ballot fascimiles Third-Party Advertising If you intend to publicly promote or oppose a political party or a candidate, or take a position on an issue with which a political party or a candidate is associated, you will be considered to be a third party engaging in election advertising. During the campaign period, you must identify yourself in your advertising. Also, if you spend more than $500 on election advertising, you are required to register with Elections New Brunswick and follow additional rules and spending limits. Whether an individual or a group, the Political Process Financing Act requires any third party to identify itself in any election advertising that it places by disclosing the name of the third party and the name of the person responsible for the third party s books and records and his or her telephone number or address. Even individual lawn signs must include this information. On September 24th VOTE!
