Mogadishu, Somalia, a city in ruins from the effects of war. Looking from an opening in the remains of buildings in his neighborhood, Hassan is a dejected man. Even with his good papers, he cannot find a job. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 1
Big buildings have been reduced into history. Nothing is spared. Businesses and companies had either closed down or relocated. 2 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
All that has now calmed down, the terrorists hiding places are now empty. Everyone is giving thanks for the return of peace. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 3
Slowly, they are now moving back to rebuild their lives. Hope has been renewed for those who had fled their homes. 4 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
However, not everyone is optimistic. Most are wondering how long it will take to rebuild the economy and their country. The impatience is fueled by resources some receive from friends or relatives living abroad, so they believe life out there is comfortable and luxurious Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 5
Passing time in a cyber cafe. Technology has enabled locals to catch up with friends who managed to leave Somalia and now living abroad. Through Social networks, they share files and photos of how life has been from both ends, locally and abroad. 6 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
The photos from abroad paint a very good living, peace, comfort and luxury. The exact opposite of how the situation is at home. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 7
Wasting no time, Hassan starts a conversation with his friend overseas. Comparing the two scenarios, Hassan is tempted to seek ways of leaving Somalia in search of the better living everseas Hello, I would want to join you over there. From what I see in your photos, I cannot resist the temptation to also be successful. 8 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
Living here is not for the faint hearted. Good, kindly outline to me all the requirements. Thanks. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 9
Hassan is required to acquire a valid National Passport Then, he should have a genuine reason to travel which requires certification by the country he is travelling to. 10 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
Sadly, Hassan cannot meet the travel requirements. Helacks a good number of documents Deep in his heart, he has a burning desire to go for the better living abroad. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 11
He goes back to chat with his friend overseas and is advised to look for agents who will help facilitate the acquiring of the travel documents. The agents can be found advertising as they look for potential migrants 12 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
Now happy and with some hope, he heads home to share the information with his parents. Dad, I have some breaking news. Some very good stuff. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 13
I have a chance of making our lives better, by travelling overseas How now? In anticipation, the parents also start picturing the better living conditions. 14 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
I was told of what I need to do. Not yet. I wanted to share with you first Have you? Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 15
Early the following day, they start looking for agents from all corners. He is lucky to get several contacts. He books an appointment and gets there early, awaiting his turn. He believes this is his turning point. 16 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
Young man, what brings you here? Fulfill all this After telling his story, the agent explains of what Hassan is required to do. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 17
Another setback. The agent requires quite a big amount of money to be paid as a lumpsome and in cash. Look keenly, here is how you will travel. 18 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
Back home, when tending his fathers flock, an idea strikes. How about selling what we can? I will replace when I finally settle down. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 19
..Then household items, one after another. How much are you going to give me for this? It sounds like a good idea, slowly the family starts selling their livestock. 20 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
The sale doesn t raise much and family members contribute to see if the intended figure will be realized. This is all we have, how do we raise the balance? Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 21
Let us take the risk and sell all that we have To raise the remaining amount, the family decides to sell their last remaining belongings. 22 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
With the uncertainity in the locals, anything sold doesn t fetch much. After selling everything, only a small percentage is remaining. Luckily the overseas friend chips in. Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions 23
The broke, homeless family now eagerly waits for Hassans journey, all believing it will change their lives With the cash in hand, Hassan is off to meet the agent. 24 Irregular Migration: Truths and Misconceptions
Synopsis Being a country that is recovering from war, living in Somalia is difficult for the locals. Virtually all Industries and businesses had closed down or relocated thus little or no employment for almost everyone. The situation makes people believe that life outside Somalia is better, happy and successful. Through contacts who are already living abroad, Hassan, a Somali national gets fully convinced and decides to also try living abroad. He shares the idea with his family and together, they concur that it is a big dream worth pursuing. Together, the family mobilizes all their resources so as to raise the required fee to meet the travel expenses, all in the hope that their efforts will pay back handsomely. But is it going to be the case?
