NEW YORK IS A DESTINATION PEOPLE DREAM OF VISITING. IT IS ALSO HOME TO ONE OF THE BEST ROAD MARATHONS IN THE WORLD. JUST WALKING THROUGH THIS LEGENDARY CITY IS EXHILARATING. Now picture yourself running through this concrete jungle as part of the 2015 New York City Marathon community. From Staten Island to Manhattan, as you cross the Queensboro Bridge, millions of people on the sidelines will cheer you on, urging you to dig deeper. Imagine the sense of fulfillment as you cross the finish line in Central Park knowing you ve raised vital funds to help Amnesty International Australia continue to protect vulnerable people and communities throughout Australia and the world. You will be joining a team of 9 like-minded individuals who are passionate about defending human rights and fighting injustice. As part of this incredible experience, you will also spend half a day at Amnesty International s New York office, meeting with campaigners and learning more about the human rights issues Amnesty is defending. When I reached the last 10 kilometres, I knew I had the New York City Marathon in my sights, and nothing was going to stop me. People told me that running this race would be an awesome experience. They totally underrated it. The elation I felt as I crossed the line was beyond words. John Dobbin, Team Amnesty NYC,

3 WHAT WILL MY IMPACT BE? By signing up to the New York Marathon as part of Team Amnesty you ll raise much needed funds to ensure that Amnesty International Australia can continue to protect vulnerable people and communities throughout Australia and the world, and to encourage governments and others to respect human rights. When we stand up against human rights abuses, governments know we re speaking on behalf of over 7 million people worldwide people like you. That s why they sit up and pay attention. And the more of us there are, the more our voice will be heard and the more impact we will have. Your support will: SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS AT RISK Right now, thousands of individuals around the world are at risk of, or are experiencing, human rights violations. These people, who are just like you, face discrimination, violence, imprisonment or even death. Thanks to pressure on the Iranian government from our supporters, in September 2013 prominent human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh (pictured above) was released from an Iranian prison and reunited with her family. With your help, we can continue to pressure the Iranian government to ensure Nasrin remains free. Nasrin is just one example of an individual for whom we have worked tirelessly, as a global movement, to free. This is what Amnesty International is known for. It s how we began and we will continue to ensure we speak out for anyone whose rights are being denied in any part of the globe. HELP BRING AN END TO TORTURE For over 50 years, Amnesty International has exposed governments who torture, and supported torture survivors in gaining justice. These decades of campaigning have already brought huge achievements, including the historic moment 30 years ago when the UN agreed to combat torture worldwide with the Convention against Torture a groundbreaking step towards making the global ban on torture a reality. Many states have national anti-torture laws. However, torture remains rife because governments are ignoring the laws and commitments they have made. Amnesty International has reported on torture or other ill treatment in 141 countries over the past five years. With your support, we can help to remind governments that they have an obligation to prevent torture. PROTECT INDIGENOUS RIGHTS Amnesty International is committed to ensuring the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is implemented locally and nationally through legislation, policies and programs, such as the Indigenous Youth Justice campaign that is launching in Whilst efforts to improve the effects of past discrimination, the disadvantage faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia remains widespread. Despite making up only 5 per cent of Australians aged 10 to 17, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people make up half of all young people in detention. We expect this trend to continue if no intervention is made. These statistics represent a systemic failure that must be addressed by the Australian Government. Amnesty is committed to improving research into Indigenous incarceration and the preventative measures that can be taken to end a vicious cycle that is seeing a generation of young Australians lost to jail. PROMOTE EQUALITY FOR REFUGEES Millions of people around the world are forced to flee their country to escape war, genocide, torture or persecution. With your help we can investigate human rights abuses against refugees and asylum seekers, and advocate for change on their behalf. We will continue to call on governments, including our own, to increase their support for refugees and work in partnership with other NGOs to protect their basic human rights. ASSIST COUNTRIES IN CRISIS Crisis response is central to the work of Amnesty International. Your support ensures that we can respond immediately to human rights crises as they occur. Amnesty supporters like you were there when we demanded the UN be granted complete access to investigate chemical weapons claims in Syria, and that the Syrian authorities be held accountable for the alleged killing of civilians in towns outside the capital of Damascus. Here in Australia, our focus is on human rights issues in Asia Pacific monitoring potential crisis situations and ensuring that our staff, supporters and the wider community are informed, engaged and ready to act. 3

4 ALFREDA S STORY COMBATING TORTURE IS PART OF OUR HISTORY. IT IS OUR LEGACY AND UNTIL THE FINAL TORTURE CHAMBER CLOSES FOR BUSINESS IT IS OUR FUTURE. Salil Shetty, Amnesty International Secretary General All over the world, people just like you are sitting in police cells or military prisons being tortured: to obtain information, to silence opposition or as a cruel punishment. Often it is simply the standard way to investigate crimes. These people are ordinary men, women and children. They are young and old. Alfreda is one of these people. She is a young single mother in the Philippines who was arrested at gunpoint in an internet cafe, and brutally tortured for charges she insists were invented. Amnesty supporters helped Alfreda get an investigation, but there is still much to do to ensure Alfreda gets the justice she deserves. By taking part in the New York City Marathon as part of Team Amnesty, you ll be helping to ensure that people like Alfreda are protected from torture and that governments and others respect human rights. TRAVEL DETAILS As this is a marathon-based adventure, and people have different routines, requirements and needs before a race, there is no daily itinerary. Inspired Adventures will work with participants, the travel partner and Amnesty International Australia to arrange at least one team dinner in New York City, as well as optional sightseeing opportunities. You will also spend half a day at Amnesty International s New York Office. Your Inspired Adventures Tour Leader will be available throughout your stay for support and to answer any questions.
