List of Courses at Joint Seminar Universitas Indonesia Bahasa Indonesia I Consumer Behavior Introductory Marketing Introductory Business CSR business Ethics International Business and Economics AIMS7 PROGRAM REPORT 1 HOW DID I TRY TO ACHIEVE MY GOALS? I set three main theme for this AIMS7 program in Indonesia. The first one is to feel the passion of ASEAN countries, particularly Indonesia. In that region the countries is growing at high rate not only economically but also politically. The second is to communicate with various people who have many backgrounds. And third one is to accustom to different culture, especially in Islamic culture, to understand diversity in the world. For the first goal, I went to many place to see the real of Indonesia and experience many services in there. For example in Jakarta, there are many fancy and big shopping mall. People can enjoy shopping in there. And more Indonesian people use smartphone for many thing. Uber, Grab, Go-jek are car-delivering services using smartphone application, for instance. In general, Indonesian economics is developing rapidly, I feel. To communicate with many people, I tried to speak Bahasa Indonesia with Indonesian people. For example, I tried to do self-introduction in Bahasa Indonesia like Nama saya Gen Otsubo. Saya kuliah di Universitas Indonesia. Saya ambil kulas tentang ekonomi, bisines, dan marketing. Saya suka makanan Indonesia karena yang itu pedas tapi enak. It is very easy Bahasa Indonesia but it was effective to be friendly. Other point is sports. I joined futsal club in there. Futsal makes us good friends. These experiences were definitely wonderful for me. 1
Generally in Indonesia, there are many people about race, nationality and/or religion. I interact with various people and feel diversity of society actually. I can hear voice of praying in Islamic mosque and see Christmas tree in shopping mall. I was surprised at tolerance of Indonesian society. 2 FOR MY FUTURE Living in Indonesia and studying in there was enlightening for me in many field. I felt the speed of country developing and the wonderfulness of communicating with various people. At the same time, I found my several weak point. The first one is to act positively. I saw many courageous people who do new and difficult challenges. I guess it is must to grow oneself. The second is my English and communication skills. It is difficult to talk concisely and logically but it is surely needed now. And listening and speaking skills of English are not enough yet. I will try to train these things and I hope to visit Indonesia again! 2
List of Courses at Joint Seminar Universitas Indonesia Bahasa Indonesia 1 English Film and Media Studies The Development of Hollywood Film Industry CSR and Business Ethics Introductory Business Culture Experience In Indonesia Selamat siang! Nama saya Makoto. Saya tinggal di Tokyo, Jepang. Saya belajar bahasa Indonesia dan sudah hidup di Indonesia 5 bulan. This is my introduction in Indonesian. This means hello! My name is Makoto. I live in Tokyo, Japan. I study Indonesian and had lived in Indonesia for 5 months. Indonesian is easier than I thought because there is no conjugated forms and some words are similar to Japanese (for example, suka means like ). This is first time to study abroad and I had a great experience during staying Indonesia. Before studying abroad, I set targets that master my Indonesian and brush up my English because national language of Indonesia is Indonesian but most students of my university can speak English. I studied Indonesian for 5 month before going to Indonesia, but it was so difficult to talk in Indonesian at first because many people use slung (for example gue means I or aja means just ). But I had a lot of chances to speak Indonesian and got used to speak it. For example, when I went to a restaurant or used taxi, I speak Indonesian to communicate with waiter or driver. And I could make Indonesian friends thorough enjoying sports. My hobby is soccer and running, so I joined futsal club and running club in university. I could speak Indonesian a lot there. Also I had chances to play futsal with other international students; German, French, Dutch, Korean and so on. I could blush up my English too. But my Indonesian and English are still not perfect, so I have to study them more and more. Thorough this studying abroad, I m interested in ASEAN and Islam. I visited Malaysia and Singapore during studying abroad. These countries are also in South East Asia, but so different from Indonesia. I thought these countries have strong points and weak points each other. So I think ASEAN is great partnership and will have an impact on the world. I also want to study about ASEAN more and I would like a future job that allows me to connect ASEAN to Japan. 3
(Indonesian futsal team) (international futsal team) Before going to Indonesia, I don t know well about Islam. But most Indonesia are Muslim and they don t eat pork, don t drink beer and prey to mosque every day. I found religions are so important for them. Including me, most Japanese have no religion, but I think we have to know other religions well and create a comfortable environment for foreigners (like halal restaurants or something. Actually a lot of Indonesian friends ask me good halal restaurants in Japan, but I didn t know.) (visited the biggest mosque in Jakarta) 4
List of Courses at Joint Seminar Universitas Indonesia Bahasa Indonesia I Development Economics Entrepreneurship Introductory Marketing Consumer Behavior International Business and Economics AIMS Study Abroad Report: Fall, 2016 Outgoing The only word I will use to describe Indonesia is WONDERFUL which is also being used by Indonesian Ministry of Tourism as the slogan. Haven t realized it has been five months since we landed on this amazing tropical country, from everything is fresh to us to survive as natives. Indonesia offered us a lot and we definitely will keep and cherish those unforgettable memory. Indonesia is a nation of delicacy, friendly people, and terrific scenes. Indonesian people love eating and their unique cuisine is very tasty as well. Not just for Asian people like us, our European friends were also fascinated by Indonesian food. From Sumatra to Bali, different minorities living in tens of thousands of scattered islands have various cuisines. As a result, eating is an important part of schedule when travelling within Indonesia. Apart from delicacy, friendly people and beautiful scenes are another impressions. I can say Indonesian people are most kind from my experiences travelling in different continents. A foreigner won t feel alone when he/she stays in Indonesia, because a lot of local Indonesians want to make friends with them listening to the stories of their home countries. Our Indonesian friends are always first to help us whenever we need a hand. During the holidays, from time to time our local friends invited us for a domestic trip, they volunteered to serve as a guide and a translator when we need to talk with vendors. After five months staying in Indonesia, I feel that Japan has a very strong presence in this country. Wherever you walk on the street, most of foreign brands are Japanese ones, for example, the mobile cars and motors. More and more Japanese companies choose to 5
build factories in Indonesia because they believe the connection between Japan and Southeast Asia gets closer and closer. If you ask a local Indonesian people the cuisine of which country you like the most, the answer you will hear most often is JAPAN, so Japanese restaurants are everywhere in Indonesia even inside the University of Indonesia. Most Indonesian people like to learn some Japanese and would like to study in Japan if they have a chance to do so. What I gained most from this precious exchange experience is I have more job opportunities and opened my eyes into a new world. Before coming to Indonesia, my expectation for this exchange is to learn local language well and learn about the Islamic culture. Indeed, I am now proud to say that I have completed all of my goal, and a new chapter has been opened for me. Terima kasih, Indonesia! 6
