1 CRITICAL 2017 CONCERNS EMBRACING NONVIOLENCE IN A TURBULENT WORLD october 19 NOVEMBER 10 Sponsored by the Office of Mission Integration THE MERCY UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY

2 Critical Concerns Week reflects the slate of issues addressed by the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Each year since 2006, GCU has dedicated scholarly study to issues relating to five critical concerns: the earth, immigration, nonviolence, racism, and women. This year, we are highlighting nonviolence with various events across campus. All events are free, and registration is required for some events. We work for peace through prayer, education, and personal and communal practices of nonviolence. Visit georgian.edu/events to register and for the most up-to-date information on Critical Concerns 2017.

3 Exploring our Accountability as Corporate Entities to help end the Crisis of Violence and Sex trafficking Sponsored by the School of Business & Digital Media Presenters: Theodora Sergiou 92, President, Nicholas Pools Inc. and GCU Lecturer in Business Administration; C. Dionysios Dionou, Author of Daniel s Message; Vanessa Coppes, Founder, ETTWomen Foundation; Lynette Barbieri, Founder, ETTWomen Foundation; and Valasia Schaefer, Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church (Toms River, NJ) Philoptochos President, representing the Sisters of All Saints Monastery of Calverton, New York, and the HOPE Project Discuss the sex trafficking epidemic in our country, and understand how, why, and where this violent phenomena is spreading. Explore how a business or corporation can be held accountable and be more responsible for helping to curb this growing trend. Finally, discuss about nonprofits that have developed to help victims escape, learn to thrive, and be trained or educated so that they can be integrated back into society. A Q & A will follow the panel discussion, and author-signed books will be available for sale. The Entrepreneurial Think Tank for Women Foundation (ETTWomen) was founded to help women entrepreneurs accomplish both personal and business goals. ETTWomen offers education, training, networking, and support to female victims of domestic violence, as well as emotional, sexual, or financial abuse as they recover and build their businesses. The Hope Project/White Field Farm in Calverton, New York, is managed by the Sisters of All Saints Monastery. Their mission is to offer job training and occupation to survivors of human trafficking. The Hope Project is committed to providing support through housing, education, occupation, and health care; creating the opportunity for healing and independence. Dates: October 19 (Thursday); 7:00 pm GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY 1

4 Declaration of NonVIolence Sign a pledge against gender-based violence. Location: GCU campus, various locations Dates: November 6 10 (Monday Friday) Voices of Women during the Holocaust Sponsored by the School of Education Women s power and voices come in many different forms, even when power is seemingly stripped away. View research-based posters that reflect women s voices during the Holocaust created by undergraduate and graduate students in the Instruction in Literacy and Social Studies course led by Nancy Sardone, Ph.D., GCU associate professor of education. Funded by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, posters may reflect the strength of women who played important roles in various resistance activities, some of whom rose as leaders of ghetto resistance organizations. They may also explore the communityorganizing efforts of Jewish women in concentration camps who facilitated their survival through sharing information, food, and clothing. Posters will be displayed on campus throughout the week. Location: GCU campus, various locations Dates: November 6 10 (Monday Friday) These underground fighters were forced out of a bunker during the suppression of the ghetto uprising in 1943 in Warsaw, Poland. 5 Film Screening & Discussion: Escape from Room 18, with DIRECTOR DANIEL BREA Sponsored by Johann Vento, Ph.D., and the Department of Religious Studies, Theology & Philosophy Former Neo-Nazi John Daly, who fled to Israel after his own gang tried to murder him upon discovering that he is Jewish, receives an from someone in his long forgotten past. Kevin Connell, a fellow ex-skinhead, who is on a mission to change his own life and make amends, has invited John to join him at an Eastern European concentration camp in Prague. It is Kevin s hope that by seeing the effects of what they practiced and preached, they will come closer to a greater understanding, and ultimately, redemption. Suffering from PTSD and a brain tumor, John is reluctant to accept this offer. Is this another attempt on his life? Or could Kevin actually be on a mission to find forgiveness for the pain he caused so many people, so long ago? Following the screening, join the film s director, Daniel Brea, for a discussion of the film and its themes. Dates: November 6 (Monday); 6:00 7:30 pm GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY 3
