Chapter VI Where Patarino s Currently Live
Patarino Families who Migrated to the U.S..0 s At the end of the 19 th Century and the beginning of the 20 th Century, millions of Italians immigrated to the United States from all over Italy. Of those with the surname Patarino, there were several people who migrated between 1900 and 1920, a couple of individuals in the 1930 s, and another 10+ people between 1951 and Many of the Patarino s living in the United States are descended from the following Patarino men: The Brothers, Nicola, Francesco, Vincenzo and Salvatore Patarino of Castellaneta, Italy The four brothers, Nicola, Francesco, Vincenzo and Salvatore were the sons of Egidio Santo Anselmo Domenico Patarino who lived in the commune of Castellaneta, province Taranto, region Puglia, Italy. The brothers all immigrated to the United States between 1905 and The brothers settled in the New York City area. Many of the Patarino s in the United States today are descended from one of these brothers (see the next page). Their descendants currently live in the states of Colorado, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, and New York. (See Chapter V for more detailed information on these brothers.) Filippo Patarino of Gioia de Colle, Italy Filippo lived in the commune of Gioia de Colle, province Bari, region Puglia, Italy. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1906 settling in New York. In 1911, his family immigrated to the U.S. including his wife Maria Romano and his children Vita Rosa Patarino, Antonia Patarino, Antonio ( Tony ) Patarino, Anna Rosa Patarino, Donato Patarino, and Gaudenzio Patarino. In 1920, some members of his family returned to Italy. His few remaining descendants in the United States currently live in the states of Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The Brothers Pasquale and Pietro Patarino of Campobasso, Italy The brothers Pasquale and Pietro lived in the province of Campobasso, region Molise, Italy (located northeast of Naples). They immigrated to the U.S. in 1910 and 1912 and settled in Pennsylvania. I believe their few descendants in the United States currently live in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Brothers Tommaso and Francesco Patarino of Roccabernarda, Italy The brothers Tommaso and Francesco lived in the commune of Roccabernarda, region Calabria, Italy. They immigrated in 1902, 1903 and 1920 and they settled in Meyersdale, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. There are many descendants of the brothers currently living in the states of Pennslyvania, New York and Florida. Pasquale J. Patarino ( ), son of Francesco, was an Army veteran of World War II. Gaetano Francesco Patarino ( ), son of Francesco, served in Patton s Third Army in World War II and was part of the D-Day Normandy invasion. Josephine N. Patarino ( ), daughter of Francesco, enlisted in the Women s Amry Corps Field Artillery and was a Aviation Cadet in World World II. The descendants of this Patarino served their new country with pride. By Giles Michael Patarino Chapter VI, Page 169
Where do Patarino s in the U.S. currently live? In 2011, the offspring of Italian immigrants (and their spouses) with the surname Patarino were living in the states of Colorado, Indiana, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. According to names.whitepages.com, there were 57 people with the surname Patarino living in the United States (peoplesmart.com lists 50 Patarino s). The following 2011 map indicates the concentrations of the Patarino surname: The following are interesting facts and observations: According to names.whitepages.com, the states with the highest concentration of people with the surname Patarino are: New York (29), New Jersey (7), Colorado (5), Indiana (5) and Massachusetts (4). From a quick review, this count includes some duplicate names. Children who don t have phone numbers and young adults with cell phones are definitely not represented in this count. We know there are actually 10 Patarino s in Colorado and 7 Patarino s in Indiana. Using this actual count, eliminating duplications, and applying simple math, there are probably no more than 80 +/- people in the United States with the surname Patarino. Many of these Patarino s descend from the brothers Nicola, Francesco, Vincenzo and Salvatore Patarino who immigrated to the United States from Castellaneta, Italy (See Chapter V). Comparing the Patarino names listed on peoplesmart.com with our family tree, it appears 60% +/- of the Patarino s in the U.S. A. are related to these four Patarino brothers. Many of these Patarino s are wives. Many of these Patarino s are women who will not pass on the surname Patarino to their children. The number of men currently under 30 years old, of child bearing years, and with the surname Patarino, may be less than a dozen. By Giles Michael Patarino Chapter VI, Page 170
Where do Patarino s in Italy currently live? In 2011, there were approximately 64 people with the surname Patarino living in Italy per cognomix.it and 70 Patarino s in the Italian White Pages per paginebianche.it. Children who don t have phone numbers and young adults with cell phones are definitely not represented in this count. Per worldnames.publicprofiler.org, people on the planet Earth using the surname Patarino, live only in Italy, the United States, and possibly in the city of Cordoba, Argentina. Per cognomix.it, Patarino s are concentrated in the following Regions and communes: Puglia (20), concentrated in: Castellaneta, Taranto (14) Bari (3) Foggia (2) Lecce (1) Piemonte (17), concentrated in: Torino (6) Alessandria (5) Asti (4) Biella (2) Calabria (8), concentrated in: Roccabernarda, Crotone (7) Catanzaro (1) Lombardia (4) Lazio Region (4) Campania (2) Sardegna (2) Veneto (2) Emilia-Romagna (2) Campania (2) Liguria (1) Trentino-Alto Adige (1) Piemonte Puglia Calabria Piemonte (17) Castellaneta, Puglia (14) Roccabernarda, Calabria (7) By Giles Michael Patarino Chapter VI, Page 171
What does the current concentration of Patarino s in Piemonte, Castellaneta and Roccabernarda tell us? (The map below shows the concentration of the surname Patarino per worldnames.publicprofiler.org) We learned in Chapter III about the family of Cesare and Giovanni Patarino who lived in the commune of Ceresole located in Piemonte (Note Ceresole is located 20 miles from Torino, 20 miles from Asti and 40 miles from Alessandria). These men had the noble status of Count and were active in the Duchy of Savoy with its capital in Torino. The family in the 1690 s sold their share of their castle and fief and probably left Ceresole during the Nine Years War, which destroyed many communes in Piemonte. We also learned that in the 12 th and 13 th Centuries, a large group of people fled the Piemonte region due to religious persecutions and relocated in the Calabria area. Giovanni Facio Patarino in 1450 lived in the Calabria region. The brothers Tommaso and Francesco who immigrated to the U.S. at the beginning of the 20 th Century lived in the commune of Roccabernarda. We learned in Chapter IV that the surname Patarino started to be used in Castellaneta around 1500 and the Patarino s of Castellaneta today are very likely descended from a single person or family that relocated from northern Italy, maybe Piemonte (we know that the word patarino is of the northern Milanese dialect and was used in the Piemonte and Lombardia regions). Based upon this research and the current concentrations of Patarino s in Italy, it could probably be asserted that the surname Patarino originated with one or several Patarino families in the Piemonte area and their descendants relocated to the Calabria and Puglia regions, settling in the communes of Roccabernarda and Castellaneta respectfully. Lastly, based on 64 people currently living in Italy with the surname Patarino, eliminating possible duplications, and adding in children, there are probably no more than 80 people currently living in Italy with the surname Patarino. Also figure maybe 5 people living in Argentina. By Giles Michael Patarino Chapter VI, Page 172
Chapter Notes With maybe 75 Patarino s in the U.S., 80 Patarino s in Italy, and possibly 5 Patarino s in Argentina, there are probably no more than 160 people in the world with the surname Patarino. There are missing gaps in our Patarino family pedigree in the United States. This can easily be reviewed and corrected by contacting the current descendants of three of the four brothers, Nicola, Francesco and Salvatore, and ask for help. How, when and why did a Patarino family immigrate to Argentina? In a quick internet search, the name Juan Nicolas Patarino turned up. Juan or Gian (Giovanni) or John is a common name used by the Patarino s. Nicolas is a common name used by the Castellaneta Patarino s. This research might result in some interesting information. Can it be that with such a few number of people in the world currently using the surname Patarino that we are all related to an original Patarino family 700 to 800 years ago? It would make sense that no one in the 13 th and 14 th Centuries would have wanted to use the surname patarino in fear of being labeled as a heretic. At the very least, it s more likely than not there were no more than a few first families that used the surname Patarino. With so few Patarino s currently living today (probably no more than 20 to 30 men of child bearing age) and the fact that in our modern society people are not having more than 1 or 2 children, is it possible that in 100 +/- years the surname Patarino could vanish? Let s hope not. By Giles Michael Patarino Chapter VI, Page 173
