3 MITOS Tool 16 MiMobileMag Information via Mobile Mobile Magazine for Migrants in various languages 1 Tool: Supporting migrants with crucial and useful information via a mobile magazine platform such as that is maintained and informed by support organisations. 2 Objectives: After downloading a data-friendly mobile magazine on their mobile telephones, migrants in different countries will be able to access crucial information and hints on their mobile devices, and will Be in a better position to make decisions for their own lives based on available country-specific information; Be able to contribute to the broader migrant community by submitting valuable feedback and taking part in polls related to their well-being and practices; and Utilise the mobile platform to access business opportunities as per advertisement from prospective employers. 3 Target group: Primary: Migrants and their families living in home countries 4 Problems and potentials of migrants addressed by this tool: Various studies have shown that access to relevant information remains one of the key requirements for migrants to get along in their foreign environment. With mobile devices being one of the main tools of communication, and with its relatively cost-effective applications it seems to be logical to assume that such niche information be delivered via mobile. However, unless a targeted application such as the foreseen MiMobileMag is implemented, it will not by default be structured into a shared resources and information-sharing mechanism for the migrant community, but remain ad hoc and ad lib. The MiMobileMag tool assumes that mobile networks are active in diverse countries and that migrants use mobile devices to stay connected to their families and vice versa. It utilises this practices to advocate for sharing information from/to support organisations in various languages using a mobile platform. The mobile internet is growing at a rapid pace and simple RSS feeds with country-specific information related to transport, legislation, business opportunities, accommodation, safety, etc. could add practical value. Secondary: Mobile users also interested in development and support of migrants 1
4 5 Description: The proposed tool MiMobileMag consists of: a. Short articles by migrant experts and organisations Support agencies affiliated with the magazine are invited to contribute articles to the magazine in return for advocacy and brand/community building. b. Advertisements by business community and employers Linking migrants to opportunities in a fair and just way will be promoted via the magazine, and the business community will be invited to advertise opportunities. c. In-country hints by Governments Key Information such as important telephone numbers & addresses by government departments related to migrant issues are dispersed via the magazine. d. Online promotion of MiMobileMag A simple website promoting the initiative and encouraging migrants to download the application onto their mobile devices. e. Peer Support Q&A The magazine will also have a special section for questions and answers between migrants maintained by the facilitating organisation. 6 Prerequisites: Implementing organization The following options can be considered in selecting the implementing organization: Mandatory/Essential: Online editorial expertise for facilitating organisation Mandatory: Migrant support expertise for contributing editors/writers 7 Particularities and/or difficulties: Particularities The development of a mobile magazine should be executed by an experienced facilitation agency, supported by contributing editors and writers from the group of migrant support organisations. The backbone of this tool will be its ease of implementation and use by support organisations and migrants. Its speciality lies entirely in the development of content appropriate for the target group and maintaining the magazine itself as platform. Difficulties/obstacles The mobile magazine can only be implemented if there are enough users and advertisers to make it sustainable in the long run. Sustainability will depend on the numbers of migrants that download and use the magazine, and therefore the difficulty is linked to the ability and willingness of contributors to add valuable content to the magazine and advertise in it. 2
5 8 Costs: Annual access (24/7 for 12 months) to, and use of, Migrant Mobile Magazine (MiMobileMag) as a facilitative tool to distribute information via mobile devices: Item: MiMobileMag Annual contribution to editor/ facilitation fee Mobile Magazine hosting platform (such as mippin.com) Annual affiliation fee as support organisation Non-contributor of content/articles Contributor of content (including local events) Annual contribution to translation services fees Annual contribution to sign-up advocacy and online campaign, including exposure to affiliated organisations Annual facilitation fee of MiMobileMag Approximate cost in US$ 250 Free of Charge 1,200 or ,400 1,200 Total cost for participation: 5,300 or 4,700 Note: The implementation of the tool is not dependent on the number of organisations participating (and one support agency in one country is sufficient), but costs will be reduced if numbers increase due to the contribution of each. 9 Dissemination: The tool will be disseminated via online social networks and also directly via the networks of support organisations in an active campaign. It is also foreseen that dissemination will be enhanced via language-friendly promotion in popular local magazines and local newspapers. This will be achieved via editorial or newsworthy articles about the initiative, instead of advertisements. 10 Links to other MITOS tools: MiMobileMag can be used by all other tools to disseminate their events or service offer. Special links exist with: MITOS 01: Opportunities for Migrants Website MITOS 12: Migrant Market Place Prepared by: Dorette Steenkamp, Uthango Social Investments newmedia@uthango.org CEFE International coordination@cefe.net 3
