1 2015 NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK SMALL GRANTS PROGRAM Involving Catholic Youth in the Church s Migration and Anti-Human Trafficking Ministry Target Audience: Catholic Parishes, Schools and Organizations Grant Size: $1,000 5,000 (Limited number of grants available) Focus: All grant applications must have as their primary focus migration and/or human trafficking as it affects issues of interest to the Church. This could include, but is not exclusive to, a focus on comprehensive immigration reform, human trafficking, refugee resettlement, unaccompanied migrant and refugee children, and immigrant detention. Grant money must be used to fund or support youth-oriented programs. For over thirty years the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has observed National Migration Week as a moment in the life of the Church to reflect upon and celebrate the wide ethnic and cultural diversity of the Church and the ministries that serve people on the move. This celebration has also served as an opportunity for the Catholic community to be educated and informed on issues related to refugees, asylees and other forced migrants, immigrants, trafficking victims and other people on the move. In an ongoing response to this call, the USCCB Department of Migration and Refugee Services has established a small grant program for the 2015 National Migration Week. The purpose of this effort is to assist Catholic parishes, schools and organizations to more fully integrate Catholic teaching and the bishops priorities concerning migration into new or existing programs, materials, events, and other activities. As a result, these organizations and their members will demonstrate a new understanding of the Church s teaching on the moral dimensions of migration (with a particular emphasis on children s issues) and a willingness to engage in practical and public policy efforts, educational outreach, and liturgical celebrations consistent with this teaching. Successful projects must focus on youth oriented programs and should generate: a new or increased awareness of how Catholic teaching on migration can be integrated into educational, liturgical and/or advocacy activities of Catholic parishes, schools, and other organizations. a model bicultural and multicultural celebration innovative ways in which the topic of migration or human trafficking can be integrated into the Church s liturgical celebrations. 1
2 media stories both within their organizational publications as well as religious and secular outlets that demonstrate a new or strengthened institutional commitment to issues related to migration or human trafficking activities that continue to build a broader constituency for increased education on migration or human trafficking related matters of importance to the Catholic Church increased cooperation on migration or human trafficking issues with local Catholic or non- Catholic organizations. education and involvement of their members in advocating for Catholic teaching on migration or human trafficking in public discussion. Criteria: To qualify for funding, the institution must: Be a Catholic parish, school or local Catholic organization listed in the Official Catholic Director; Demonstrate strong support for the project by the institution s chief executive, pastor, or principal as evidenced by their approval of the request for funding; Affirm and reflect Catholic teaching on migration or human trafficking; Use grant money to develop programs, advocacy efforts, educational initiatives, or pastoral activities oriented toward youth. (21 and under); Provide an update on the development of the grant funded program six months after it begins and final summary at conclusion of the project. The final summary should include any relevant findings from your project, an explanation of any obstacles encountered when implementing the project, and samples of any resources created with respect to the project. Focus on one or more of four primary objectives: o Educational: through publications, meetings (local, regional), events, media stories, the development of a curriculum, etc, the project should generate broader awareness on matters related to youth among the constituency that the organization serves. o Capacity Building: the project should generate new and innovative ideas or significantly strengthen ongoing efforts to act on the educational and public policy aspects of a Catholic approach. o Liturgical: develop a liturgical celebration that highlights youth experience. Bicultural or multicultural celebrations are most encouraged. o Advocacy: the project should generate greater awareness and action on the moral dimensions of the migration experience as it relates to youth. It should also lead to greater understanding of the public policy debate and engagement in the public policy priorities of the U.S. Catholic bishops, state Catholic conferences and/or diocesan social ministry offices. Funding for these grants is limited, so not all eligible applications will be funded. The USCCB Department of Migration and Refugee Services will review the applications and make final decisions about awards. 2
3 Interested Catholic parishes, schools and organizations should submit the attached application form to USCCB/MRS postmarked no later than Friday, October 31, Notification of awards will be announced during the 2015 National Migration Week. Grants will cover a one-year period and will be awarded in full at the beginning of the project periods. All projects must begin by March 1, Questions regarding the grant program can be directed to Todd Scribner at the USCCB Department of Migration and Refugee Services by phone at or by at TScribner@usccb.org. 3
