4 Develop an understanding of mourning as an obligatory psychobiological response to a significant loss. Topics will include adult mourning, the two stages of mourning, complications of mourning and the chosen traumas. 5 Building response capacity to disasters and major traumatisation Presenter: Prof. Dean Ajdukovic, Croatia Biography: Dean Ajdukovic Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at the Department of Psychology and Head of the Chair of Social Psychology, University of Zagreb, Croatia. He is the head of the Chair for social psychology, and former chairperson of the Department and past director of Postgraduate Psychology Program. He has extensive experience in working with refugees and victims of organized violence, social reconstruction and mental health interventions in communities affected by violence and social transition, especially in work with families exposed to violence. He has published over 90 papers in journals and books in Croatian, English, Macedonian, Russian and Albanian and he has lectured in a number of centers of excellence in the US and Europe. He serves as consultant and trainer in a number of countries on psychosocial program development and evaluation, trauma and violence, NGO strengthening, community crisis interventions. He has been often invited to work in countries affected by upheaval such as Albania, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ingushetia. He is president of the Society for Psychological Assistance (SPA), a regional mental health nongovernmental organization based in Zagreb, Croatia, member of the Council of the International Society for Health and Human Rights (ISHHR, since 1998) and past president ( ) and Board member ( ) of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS). 7 Group treatment with traumatized asylum seekers and refugees: Does it work, for whom, and how? Presenter: Boris Drožđek, Holland Biography: Boris Drožđek, MD, MA is a psychiatrist at the Psychotrauma Centrum Zuid Nederland/Reinier van Arkel group, s-hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, and a co-director of the International Summer School of Psychotrauma in Dubrovnik, Croatia. He is a teacher in social psychiatry, a board member of NtVP (Dutch Psychotrauma Society) and a council member of IRCT (International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims). Together with John P. Wilson he has edited the books Broken Spirits: The Treatment of Traumatized Asylum Seekers and Refugees, War and Torture Victims (Brunner-Routledge, New York, 2004), and Voices of Trauma: Treating Survivors across Cultures (Springer, New York, 2007), along with many other scientific publications. 8 Community Consultations using Storyboarding Presenter: Dr. Eileen Pittaway, Australia Biography: Dr Eileen Pittaway, Phd (Refugee Policy and Management), MBA (Social Policy and Administration), Grad. Dip. Social Administration, Grad. Dip. Education Studies, Dip. Social Welfare. Eileen is the Director of the Centre for Refugee Research, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, and Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Work, coordinating and teaching in the Master Programs of International Social Development, and Refugees and Forced Migration. In the past decade she has conducted research, and provided training to refugees, UN and NGO staff in refugee camps in Kenya, Thailand, Ethiopia, Bougainville, Egypt and Sri Lanka. She is currently a Council Member of Asian Women's Human Rights Council; Chairperson of the Australian National Committee on Refugee Women; Honorary Life member of Asia Pacific Watch Management Committee, and Committee Member, Australian Human Rights Centre, University of New South Wales. In 2001 Eileen was awarded a Human Rights Medal by the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission for her work with Refugee Women and Children. In 2005 she was awarded a New South Wales Premiers Award for her contribution to public education regarding refugees. The facilitators work with participants to explore potential solutions and strategies for action in their communities. 8

9 Community Education Giving of testimony Storyboarding technique: participants use a series of drawings to conduct situational analyses. Learning Objectives: To enable participants to: Learn an introduction to Human Rights and Gender issues. Learn to explore potential solutions and strategies in issues of critical concern to their communities. This workshop intends to train trainers. Participants will take part in the full process and spend time analysing, exploring and practicing the skills needed to use the Storyboarding technique. Target group: Social workers, community development workers, students, community leaders, implementation partners and NGOs. 9

10 Designing an Awareness Raising Campaign to Combat Human Trafficking by ICMC Indonesia Biography: Responding to the needs of people on the move since 1951, ICMC serves and protects uprooted people: refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and migrants, regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality. Working directly with migrants and refugees in more than 40 countries around the world and providing a dignity-driven voice for migrants, ICMC responds to the challenges of people on the move with expertise and action. ICMC advocates and implements rights-based policies and durable solutions for vulnerable men, women and children across the globe. ICMC Indonesia s human trafficking team are experts in implementing antitrafficking campaigns. They also run shelters for victims of trafficking at Indonesia- Malaysia border and have a number of publications about this topic. ISHHR invited ICMC Indonesia to deliver a hands-on workshop in Tbilisi, where participants will walk out with the necessary skills to design an anti-trafficking campaign. Workshop Date and Duration: 6&7 October, over 2 days Audience Capacity: 35 The history and root causes of trafficking Understanding the complex networks in human trafficking Designing an anti-trafficking campaign Learning objectives: To enable participants to: Get in-depth knowledge about causes and consequences of human trafficking situation throughout the world Take part in the full process, and spend time analysing, exploring and practicing the skills needed to design an anti-trafficking campaign in their home countries. Target group: Community development personnel, community leaders, human rights and anti-trafficking advocates, policy makers, government and NGO personnel. Biofeedback Approaches 10

11 Presenter: STARTTS, Australia Mirjana Askovic, Mariano Coello Biography: The NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) helps refugees recover from their experiences and build a new life in Australia. STARTTS also works with other organizations and individuals to help them work more effectively with refugees. Opened in 1988, STARTTS is one of Australia s leading organizations for the treatment of torture and trauma survivors. STARTTS combines clinical and community development - psychosocial approaches in its work with individuals, families and refugee communities. STARTTS services include counseling, group therapy, group activities and outings, camps for children and young people, English classes and physiotherapy. Workshop Date and Location: 7 October / Meeting Room 4 Audience Capacity: 25 Physical and emotional symptoms of trauma The complex relationship and link between body and mind: biofeedback Techniques and technology used in biofeedback Learning objectives: To enable clinicians to: Deepen their understanding of how psychological trauma manifests through a range of emotional and physical symptoms. Observe and learn how the complex relationship between body and the mind is addressed through the integration of various biofeedback techniques. Suggested pre-requisites: Some experience and understanding of working with traumatized clients, basic knowledge of PTSD Target group: Clinical psychologists, counselors 11

12 Creative Therapies Presenter: Amber Gray, Haiti/US Biography: Amber Elizabeth Gray, MPH, MA, LPCC, ADTR, NCC, is the Director of Restorative Resources Training & Consulting International, LLC, which provides training, supervision, and consultation for individuals, non-profit organizations, health care facilities, educational programs and NGO s who work with adult and child survivors of trauma. Creative therapies workshop with her own words is: For survivors of torture and other human rights abuse, voices are silenced. The scars are not only physical, but often emotional, spiritual, social and psychological. In this workshop, we will theoretically, scientifically and experientially explore the use of the creative arts therapies for our work with survivors of human rights abuse. Current neuropsychiatric research endorses the use of non-verbal therapies for survivors of traumatic experience. A brief overview of the theories and research that support these therapies will be accompanied by several experiential activities involving movement, body awareness, art, rhythm and non-verbal storytelling. Workshop Date and Duration: 6 October , Meeting Room 3 Audience Capacity: 25 Restorative Movement Psychotherapy How can movement help healing? The Centre Post Framework: finding the centre physically, spiritually and culturally. Learning Objectives: To enable participants to: Learn about the properties of the Restorative Movement Psychotherapy. Learn about the different methods including: drumming, ritual and dance movement therapy. How do they work? Target group: 12

13 Counsellors, psychologists, community development workers, social workers, students and others interested in art therapy. IMPROTANT NOTICE FOR CREATIVE THERAPIES WORKSHOP: *Participants are asked to bring any coloring supplies (i.e crayons, colored pencils), small musical and percussion instruments, and drums, if its easy to do so (i.e. if you are local or can travel easily with them). Also, all participants are asked to please bring an object that symbolizes, represents or signifies their culture however they understand culture. 14 Multicenter Torture Treatment Research: Methodological Successes and Developing a Shared Vision for Overcoming the Barriers by Crystal Riley, M.A. & S. Megan Berthold, PhD, LCSW Chair & Co-Chair, Research & Data Committee National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs US and Dr. Jose Quiroga, MD Workshop Date and Location: 7 October / Meeting Room 3 Audience Capacity: 20 I. Getting Started: Defining the need for data and defining the barriers to being able to collect data across multiple programs. Ms. Riley and Dr. Berthold will share the struggles and successes of the NCTTP in getting its Data Collection Project started, the project s evolution over time, and share a summary of the data collected. II. Setting up the Structure: This involved research and the consulting of many experts in various fields -- multi group data collection, data analyses, safe data transfer and storage, protection of public health information and client identity, and oversight protection of the data collection process. III. Making it Work: Results: Data collected on over 7,500 torture survivors treated in approximately 25 centers of the NCTTP across the United States -- A summary of these data. IV. Bringing Data Collection Possibilities Home: Working as a group, leaders and participants will discuss barriers and challenges currently faced and problem solve solutions participants might use as they work in various arenas toward collecting data across multiple centers. To enable participants to: Participants will learn new ideas, techniques, and solutions which they can explore as they collect data across programs within their own arenas. An information network can begin in which many programs across many countries can communicate about their own experiences, questions, and needs related to data collection across multiple centers. 14

15 Exploration of a follow up workshop to reconvene many of the same participants and others to discuss progress, new challenges, and possible new solutions related to data collections projects. Some plans made for a simple data collection of a few variables across several programs. 16 Forensic psychology strategies in cases of sexual violence in situations of internal armed conflict Presenter: REDINFA/Rosa Lia Chauca Biography: Rosa Lia Chauca holds a Master in Social Policies majoring in Management of Development Projects. Rosa Lia is the president of REDINFA Peru (Asociación Red para la Infancia y la familia Perú) with experience in working with a focus on child-workers as well as community mental health and development of modules in the context of children and women affected by political violence. Rosa Lia has extensive experience in coordinating, monitoring and evaluation of community mental health projects. She is a member of the ISHHR Executive Board. Workshop Date and Duration: 7 October , Meeting Room 2 Maximum Audience Capacity: 20 This workshop explores the forensic psychology strategies developed in collaboration with the victims and their families and sheds some light on the common goal of seeking truth, justice and reparation, taking the extent of personal and social damage caused into account. The methodolgy used will be participatory, reflective and experiential, which will build on the experiences of people seeking to share the socio-economic and cultural rights in countries where participants work, especially in terms of gender, violence, armed conflicts, allowing us to identify the psychosocial impact of violence and develop a forensic psychology strategy, taking into account the rules and judicial procedures.
