2 About Professional & Organisational Development The Professional and Organisational Development Program provides a range of opportunities for professionals, volunteers and community members to develop their skills and knowledge in working with refugee and asylum seeker survivors of torture and trauma. Our facilitators are experienced social workers, psychologists, teachers and community development practitioners who have experience working in torture and trauma with clients and communities. Facilitators are therefore able to draw on current issues, themes and experiences from their own practice to enrich the workshops. The sessions are interactive, and combine formal presentations with large and small group discussions drawing on participants experience. Our Calendar of workshops includes specialist programs for people working in educational settings, and for nurses and allied health professionals, as well as sessions open to anyone working with refugees and asylum seekers. Our Professional and Organisational Development Program includes a range of tailored organisational development opportunities with individual agencies as well as an open calendar of events. 3 Professional Development tailored to your organisation Along with our public Professional Development Calendar, also provides organisation-specific professional development for agencies working with people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Using an organisational development model we tailor professional development specifically to your organisation. We will initially discuss your overall needs and then work closely with you to identify the learning aims of your staff. We will discuss with you the best structure for professional professional development and change management activities, and tailor training materials to the unique needs of your organisation. Professional development sessions can be one off or may be incorporated into a series, depending on your organisation s needs and capacity. We may recommend that professional development is incorporated with ongoing reflective practice sessions. The reflective practice model encourages participants to develop deeper understanding of the impact of the work on themselves, and what they bring to the work, enabling participants to consider creative and innovative approaches to working with refugee and asylum seekers. Reflective practice sessions can be implemented in organisations or networks where this approach to professional development is indicated. Costs will vary and may include preparation time, number of facilitators, resources, and travel expenses. has workshop spaces in Brunswick and Dandenong which, if available, can be used free of charge. For time-specific needs, please allow sufficient lead-time for us to negotiate and develop the program, generally a minimum of two months. Please complete the form in as much detail as you can. The workshop explores specific risk and protective factors for suicide in people from refugee background including asylum seekers, with the aim of increasing participants insight into the challenges faced by this population and how these challenges interact with risk of suicide. Participants will be introduced to a suicide risk assessment framework and apply this framework to working with refugees and asylum seekers. The workshop will also look at the impact of working with suicidality on the worker themselves, with a focus on selfcare. Education/Professional- Development.aspx Settlement, trauma & addiction UNDERSTANDING NEEDS OF REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS Understanding culture, settlement and trauma are key to effective engagement with migrants and refugees that experience alcohol and other drug issues. The workshop provides tools and strategies to work with people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, from the perspective of cultural competence and trauma informed care. The workshop brings together the expertise of two specialist agencies, the Centre for Culture Ethnicity and Health and The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture (), and is suitable for anyone working in the alcohol and other drugs sector. Migration status and issues of safety for refugees and asylum seekers, and their loved ones, means that uncertainty dominates the client experience and their relationships with workers. Content includes: Impact of long-term detention on mental health; Impact of long term uncertainty on relationships, place and identity; What have we learnt from the history of TPVs?; Ways of responding to refugees and asylum seekers who are forced to live with long term uncertainty. Content includes: God-centredness as a core value of people of refugee and asylum seeker background. The importance of world views giving primacy to spiritual beliefs in the context of therapeutic work. Ways spirituality links to healing and recovery. Participants should have completed a Trauma focused Counselling course or have equivalent training or experience. COST $90 per session Trauma-focused counselling: extension workshops 2 X HALF DAY WORKSHOPS These workshops will provide counsellors with additional skills in thematic areas relevant to trauma focused counselling. Each session will cover a specific topic relating to working with trauma and will be presented by practitioners with expertise in their field. There will be opportunities to explore different approaches, theory and practice with like-minded colleagues. You may enrol for either or both of the workshops. Morning ( pm) Working Therapeutically with Suicidality This half day workshop is for people who are familiar with suicide risk assessment and are working with people who are chronically suicidal. There will be a focus on engaging therapeutically with ongoing suicidality in counselling and also on the impacts this brings on the worker. Afternoon ( pm) Narrative Approaches to Trauma This half day workshop is for people who are currently working with people from refugee type backgrounds and interested in extending their skills in narrative approaches to trauma. There will be opportunities to develop skills in the creation of documents with clients, along with working with the tree of life. Cognitive and Psychosocial Assessment of Refugee Children A HALF-DAY WORKSHOP FOR PSYCHOLOGISTS AND EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS This workshop aims to enable practising psychologists and education professionals to upgrade their cross-cultural, theoretical and practical skills in cognitive and psychosocial assessment, and increase awareness of refugee children s academic challenges. CONTENT INCLUDES: Effects of trauma and family functioning on cognitive and emotional processes Linguistic factors affecting cognitive performance and academic achievement Implications for testing and intepretation of results Case studies with a focus on schools Refugee children can be seriously disadvantaged at school and may be referred for cognitive assessment to rule out a learning disorder. To minimise the likelihood of over- or under-diagnosis, this half-day workshop explores factors that may influence cognitive functioning and academic performance. 18 DATE: WED 9 MARCH TIME: 4-8pm COST: $60 Light refreshments included VENUE: 4 Gardiner St. Brunswick SUITABLE FOR: Mental health reports for people seeking asylum EVENING WORKSHOP for MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Mental health professionals e.g., psychologists and psychiatrists; social workers; General Practitioners who may have a role in preparing mental health related medico-legal reports for people seeking asylum. This professional development evening will provide an opportunity for interested health professionals to learn about the requirements of medico-legal reports with a mental health focus, when and how to contribute, and key dos and don ts. There is a need for specialist practitioners to prepare expert reports for people seeking asylum. The most common purpose of such reports is the documentation of evidence of torture. Participants will be oriented to key resources relevant to report writing. Managing personal responses to requests for report-writing will also be explored, acknowledging that it can be a difficult area to work in. 19 DATE: WED 16 March TIME: 5-8pm COST: $60 Light refreshments included VENUE: 4 Gardiner St. Brunswick Supporting refugees arriving from Syria EVENING WORKSHOP The Australian government has recently approved an intake of 12,000 new refugees from Syria under the Humanitarian program. This workshop, facilitated by staff including workers currently working in Syrian and Iraqi communities, will: Consider some of the likely experiences of refugees from this background Examine the psychosocial impact of prolonged, recent and continuing war trauma on new arrivals (eg. news from home, live feed, preoccupation with the safety of relatives) Discuss ways to best engage with and support people from these communities. Content includes: Ways in which the Framework for Recovery can be applied to work with children and families. A detailed example of a creative intervention that can be used with all members of the family system How services and professionals can modify practices so as to engage and assist children, young people and families from refugee backgrounds. This seminar will explore some of the potential farreaching impacts of trauma on relationships for individuals, families and communities in the resettlement context. A panel of speakers including members from refugee communities will explore the impact of trauma on relationships from different angles. Opportunities for questions and a discussion will follow. Participants will develop an increased knowledge and understanding of the complex and dynamic nature of the impact that trauma and collective trauma have on individuals, families and community members. Content includes: Self awareness and and sensitivity to conflicting values Masculinity as dynamic and changing, Relevant considerations when women & men occupy different non-traditional roles & spaces. There is therefore no cost to participants for this workshop. School s In for Refugees 1 DAY WORKSHOP This comprehensive introduction is recommended as the first professional development from for those working with refugee background students and families. It is appropriate for those working in and with schools and other educational settings, at primary, secondary and post-compulsory levels. The course covers: the refugee experience for young people including their prior education experiences the impact of trauma on young people s learning and wellbeing the role of teachers and schools in supporting recovery from trauma strategies that support the recovery process that teachers and other staff can use in the classroom a whole school approach and key areas where schools can increase support for refugee background students and families. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO TEACHERS AND THOSE WORKING IN AND WITH SCHOOLS COST Schools Support Program is able to provide a professional development program to teachers and those working in and with schools through the support of the Department of Education and Training. There is therefore no cost to participants for this workshop. Schools and Families Working Together HALF DAY WORKSHOP Research indicates that student outcomes are enhanced and schools are more effective when families are engaged in their child s education. Schools are becoming increasingly aware of the need to strengthen support for families from a refugee background, as they navigate their way through the unwritten rules of Australian school life. This workshop will explore what family engagement means, and showcase current good practice, strategies and examples from Victorian schools.
