2 Friday, 13 OCTOBER PM DOORS OPEN 5.30PM THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS: LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND EXAMPLES FROM PNG United Nations System in PNG, 2016, Papua New Guinea, 5 minutes In 2015, 193 states, including Papua New Guinea, adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, as well as to build prosperity and peace. These Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs serve as a platform to transform the world by The SDGs aim to improve the quality of each person s life, because everyone matters. This film tells the stories of three families in the Coastal, Highlands and Central regions of Papua New Guinea. It documents the challenges the families face in their daily lives, how they are overcoming these and their aspirations for the future. 5.35PM OPENING CEREMONY 6.00PM CHASING ASYLUM Eva Orner, 2016, Australia, 90 minutes Chasing Asylum exposes the real impact of Australia s offshore detention policies and features never before seen footage from inside Australia s offshore detention camps, revealing the personal impact of sending those in search of a safe home to languish in limbo. 7.30PM PANEL DISCUSSION: THE RIGHT TO SEEK ASYLUM 8.30PM DOORS CLOSE SATURDAY, 14 OCTOBER AM DOORS OPEN 10.00AM COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Papua New Guinea Governance Facility, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 5 mins MANAM - 12 YEARS LATER Maria Sagrista, Philip Gibbs (Divine Word University), 2017, Papua New Guinea, 24 minutes This challenging film begins with scenes from the devastation after the 2004 eruption on Manam Island and the evacuation of the population. Manam Island is a volcanic island located 12km off the north coast of Madang Province in PNG. Eruptions damage houses, pollute water supplies and devastate gardens leaving them covered by thick layers of ash and tephra, leaving the Island almost uninhabitable after the 2004 eruption. Most of the 9,000 displaced people were taken to three care centres along the Bogia coastline: Asuramba, Potsdam and Mangem. Land traditionally used as coconut plantations was allocated for provisional resettlement. The Red Cross Caritas and World Vision assisted refugees with basic emergency supplies and the Government provided subsistence food for a year. But, what is the situation now 12 years later? The film highlights the experience of people in the face of intermittent volcanic activity on the Island, and conflicts of interest on the mainland, in terms of their right to land, food, health and education. Hospitality provided on the mainland by local hosting communities has to cope with the expanding refugee population and their needs for necessities such as garden land and housing materials. A message emerging repeatedly from people interviewed in the film is the responsibility of the government to resettle the people displaced by the volcanic activity on the Island 10.30AM BETELNUT BISNIS Chris Owen, Andrew Pike, 2004, Australia, 52 mins Betelnut is one of the most widely used narcotics in the world. In the coastal areas of Papua New Guinea, where it is grown, it has been a socially acceptable stimulant since ancestral times, but in the central Highlands where the majority of the population live, it is a relatively recent arrival. Many Highlanders have come to depend on betelnut, not only because of their addiction to the drug, but also for their livelihood, trading small quantities of the nut up from the coast to sell in their local markets. For many families, the betelnut trade is the only source of cash income to pay for such basic necessities as food, school fees and medicine. This is the story of one such family in the Highlands Lukas Kaima and his wife Kopu - as told by their friend and close neighbour, Chris Owen, an Australian expatriate. The Kaimas are settlers from the Eastern Highlands, without land of their own, living on a small plot on the outskirts of Goroka town by arrangement with traditional landowners. The soil is too poor to grow their own food and they have to rely on cash earnings to survive. Lukas sometimes finds part-time work as a nightwatchman and labourer, but decides to try his hand at the betelnut trade to see if he can earn some extra money to make ends meet. The film follows Lukas and his wife as they try to make a success of their business travelling to and from the coast on the betelnut trail AM DRIVING THE CHANGE Marco Venditti, UNDP-PNG, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 30 minutes In September 2015, after a 15 years period of implementation, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were put to rest in favour of a new set of principles known as the Sustainable Development GOalds (SDGs) with the objective of leaving no one behind in the race to eradicate poverty worldwide. Driving the Change, a documentary filmed in Domil, a remote village in the Jiwaka Province, of Papua New Guinea s Highlands regions, looks at how some of these principles have been put into practice, through the story of a community, which is striving to start a commercial poultry production in the hope for a better future.

3 NKW FRESH: A FRESH APPROACH FOR FARMERS IN PNG Sarah Wiles, Market Development Facility, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 7 minutes 1.30PM TANIM James Frankham & the Faraway team, 2002, Papua New Guinea, 51 minutes The Papua New Guinea-Australia partnered project, Market Development Facility, is working with fresh produce buyer, NKW Fresh, who supports farmers in this region by providing an invaluable collection service for their crops in hard to reach locations. Through the partnership, NKW has recruited Field Extension Officers and armed them with tablets loaded with innovative crop management software to help farmers with crop planning and cultivation practices. This, in turn, will assist farmers to grow a consistent, high quality supply of fresh produce. Democratic political principles have finally reached the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Tanim to change or to turn is the story of how the Apulin people, the ruling tribe of Enga province, are struggling to balance this alien electoral system, with all its implicit values and practices, with the secure familiarity of their traditional approaches to rule, land ownership, and systems of compensation. Change has come, and the Apulins must now turn their society in a new direction if they are to survive in their ancestral lands PM PANEL DISCUSSION: DEVELOPMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS 1.00PM FROM SPEARS TO SEMI-AUTOMATICS: THE HUMAN COST OF TRIBAL CONFLICT IN PNG ICRC-PNG, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 24 minutes The humanitarian consequences of tribal warfare in Papua New Guinea are as devastating as those seen in large-scale, armed conflict. Every year, dozens of people are killed and thousands displaced because of tribal fighting in the Highlands Region. Homes, schools and health centres are razed to the ground. Crops are destroyed. Livelihoods are ruined. Sexual violence is commonplace. The increased availability of modern weapons means the violence is becoming more destructive. To make matters worse, the traditional rules governing tribal fighting are breaking down. Women, children, the elderly and health-care workers are now targets. In 2016, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) travelled for two weeks to document the devastating impacts of conflict on communities in Hela and the Southern Highlands Provinces, the result is this film. 2.30PM 3.30PM PANEL DISCUSSION: ELECTIONS TICKLING GIANTS Sara Taksler, 2016, Egypt, 1 hour 51 minutes, Rated R In the midst of the Egyptian Arab Spring, Bassem Youssef makes a decision that s every mother s worst nightmare... He leaves his job as a heart surgeon to become a full-time comedian. Dubbed, The Egyptian Jon Stewart, Bassem creates the satirical show, Al Bernameg. The weekly program quickly becomes the most viewed television program in the Middle East, with 30 million viewers per episode. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart averaged two million viewers. In a country where free speech is not settled law, Bassem s show becomes as controversial as it popular. He and his staff must endure physical threats, protests, and legal action, all because of jokes. As Bassem attempts to remain on the air, keep his staff safe, and not get arrested, he continues to let those in power know they re being held accountable. Despite increasing danger, the team at Al Bernameg employ comedy, not violence, to comment on hypocrisy in media, politics, and religion. Tickling Giants follows the team of Al Bernameg as they discover democracy is not easily won. The young women and men working on Bassem s show are fearless revolutionaries, who just happen to be really, really funny. 5.00PM 6.00PM PANEL DISCUSSION: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION DOORS CLOSE

4 Sunday, 15 October 2017 WOMEN S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT Papua New Guinea Governance Facility, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 6 mins 9.30AM DOORS OPEN 2.00PM PANEL DISCUSSION: GIRLS RIGHTS IN PNG 10.00AM THE SONS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS Tim Wolff, 2011, USA, 82 minutes, Rated M Mardi Gras, drag royalty and a glittering civil rights accomplishment - where else could these elements come together but in New Orleans? Interweaving archival footage with contemporary interviews, The Sons of Tennessee Williams tells the story of New Orleans LGBT Mardi Gras across five decades and uncovers the history of the first civil rights for LGBT Americans. STORI BILONG MI: THE LION OF LAE, THE REFORMIST, AND THE STRAIGHT SHOOTER Robert McKechnie, Save the Children Australia, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 4 mins, 2 mins, 3 mins These 3 short films capture the stories of 3 participants from Save the Children s Poro Sapot Project a sexual and reproductive health project that was funded by the Australian Government and worked to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of key populations in Papua New Guinea for over 15 years. The project has been far-reaching, operating in NCD, Eastern Highlands, Morobe, Western and Central provinces. The Poro Sapot Project engaged police, service providers, gatekeepers, community groups and other key stakeholders to create an enabling environment for the promotion and protection of sexual health, rights and well-being among most at risk populations. At the heart of all Poro Sapot work is the protection of sexual and reproductive health rights for female sex workers, men who have sex with men and transgender people, and the promotion of a key population-led HIV and SRH response AM 12.30PM PANEL DISCUSSION: NON-DISCRIMINATION AND VULNERABLE GROUPS CHURCH PARTNERSHIP Papua New Guinea Governance Facility, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 6 mins TANNA Bentley Dean, Martin Butler, 2015, Vanuatu, 1 hour 44 minutes, Rated M Tanna is set in the South Pacific where Wawa, a young girl from one of the last traditional tribes, falls in love with her chief s grandson, Dain. When an inter-tribal war escalates, Wawa is unknowingly betrothed as part of a peace deal. The young lovers run away, but are pursued by enemy warriors intent on killing them. They must choose between their hearts and the future of the tribe, while the villagers must wrestle with preserving their traditional culture and adapting it to the increasing outside demands for individual freedom. Tanna is based on a true story and performed by the people of Yakel in Vanuatu. 3.00PM FRACKMAN Trish Lake, Simon Nasht, Richard Todd, 2015, Australia, 1 hour 33 minutes This is a film about ordinary people caught up in a modern day multinational gas rush to secure and exploit coal seam gas. Accidental activist Dayne The Frackman Pratzky was building a simple home on his property, until the gas company arrived, demanding to install wells. So began his transformation from knockabout pig-shooter to passionate activist, and a David and Goliath battle against a $70 billion industry. Along the way he finds love, tragedy and triumph - and a few laughs. RIVER VILLAGES ADAPTING TO CHANGE IN CLIMATE LairdTran Studio & Lucas Kou, 2017, Papua New Guinea, 9 minutes HEAPS International Foundation Inc is based in Wewak and with the support of the UNDP Port Moresby they are assisting the village people. The East Sepik has a large catchment area with landforms that include swampland, tropical rainforest and mountains. The Sepik River region had remained essentially unspoilt; with the river as a vital source of fish and clean water, transportation and wood. There is a 2 river splits in the Keram area, the main Keram River is called the white river and the black water river is called the grass land area by the locals, this area is inaccessible by land. The Keram grassland people of Wom 1&2 and adjacent villages are the Iatmul group who inhabit small, traditional villages on the river and its tributaries. The local villagers live in a fragile ecosystem and are exposed to life-threatening challenges as a result of environmental degradation, such as season changes with river flooding.. The villagers have been severely affected and are losing that which defines the river societies and their livelihood. The local people recognise that environmental protection and sustainable development has a fine balance when preserving their river and their livelihood. 4.30PM 5.30PM PANEL DISCUSSION: BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN PNG DOORS CLOSE LOOK.
