NO MATTER WHERE OR WHO YOU ARE... AN INCLUSIVE YOU HAVE SECURITY THROUGH FAMILIARITY NETWORK
THE OPPORTUNITY THE PROBLEM Mobility provides access to jobs, education, and resources. We all see and navigate the world in a different way, and the same goes for transit maps. While we strive to create simple and functional route maps, this simplicity assumes that we all understand, interpret and navigate space the same. This results in a visual barrier to immigrant and refugee communities who depend on maps to feel grounded, safe, and oriented. Can we create a simple, inclusive, lo-tech system to display different types of maps and information for different cultures in our transit stations in a community-driven manner? Access to resources and assistance can also be difficult to find and knowing who to ask to locate them can create, yet another barrier to them. THE CONTEXT 43% Speak English less than very well 129 languages spoken in Seattle Schools Traffic signs are not universally understood 28% live in households that are linguistically isolated Commute distances can create challenges to work and school M
INCLUSIVE WAYFINDING A community-driven approach to designing multiple maps that can be paired with existing maps to maximize competency and information distribution. Created by immigrant and refugee communities Utilizes local knowledge and resources Visualizes communities in a personalized manner Harnesses local resource--seattle s Community Liaisons to ensure inclusiveness and engagement 1 Existing City Transit Map New Maps Developed Through Inclusive Mapping Process Inclusive Wayfinding IDENTIFY DEMOGRAPHICS What does data tell us who is living in our respective communities? What do conversations with local immigrant and refugee communities tell us about the types of maps needed? 2 CREATE INCLUSIVE MAP DESIGN PROGRAM XX Race and Social Justice Toolkit and Inclusive Outreach - -Use - XXPublic Engagement Guide to create an inclusive and mapping program for immigrant and refugee communities - Highlight available resources on maps
em em Lor Lor Lorem Lorem 4 MONITOR STATION MAPS FOR EDITS AND MAINTENANCE - Accuracy and usefulness - crowdsourcing updates using tools including the Streetwyse app - Community liaisons verify info and update maps 3 INSTALL ACROSS TRANSIT SYSTEMS - Install in all scales of transit stations, from bus stops to larger mobility hubs 5 EVALUATE EFFECTIVENESS - Check with community liaisons - Who is still left out of the process? - What adjustments are needed to ensure inclusiveness?
SUMMARY RESOURCES Like language barriers, trouble with mobility is an issue that affects nearly every aspect of life for refugees and immigrants. Navigating a new place can be difficult. People navigate spaces differently, depending on their experiences, interests, and needs. It s more complicated when our maps aren t in multiple languages. This barrier contributes to additional difficulties that our immigrant and refugee communities face when trying to access opportunities. This concept works to overcome this barrier by integrating maps of multiple types with transit maps that are designed to accommodate different cultures. Physical maps also relieve the need to own a smart phone to access information and navigate a space. Community-driven development Agencies can use inclusive outreach and engagement for the development of different maps that represent different communities. Crowdsourcing for accuracy and relevance. Community members can add new destinations, landmarks, or signifiers with the use of StreetWyze - an app that allows for real-time updates to community information. Information can be vetted by community liaisons for approval to be added and reprinted for the next update. Easy to update Routes change, businesses relocate, and material maps age. Since the system is designed to be swapped out, outdated maps can quickly be reprinted and swapped out on a periodic basis. Doesn t remove advertisement space Can be site specific on the different immigrant and refugee communities in the area As populations shift, different maps can be used making these maps an organic resource that changes with the population. mmunity-liaisons Inclusive Outreach and Public Engagement Guide - Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs
