1 READING WORKSHOP T HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY? Teens from all backgrounds (not just from rich families) are splurging like never before on food, fashion, personal grooming and tech products. Media presence requires spending money. Latest trends: 1. Teens are spending more but are more budget conscious than ever (since the 2008 recession). Greater sense of value for money comparison shopping. 2. Increase in the amount of money spent on eating out (picky, very selective) 3. Fashion spending is up, especially buying upmarket brands. 4. Online shopping rather than browsing in stores 5. Tech products: US favorite brand: Apple. 6. More teens are working but they still get most of their spending money from their parents. 2 WRITING: Opinion essay Your shopping trends: How do you spend your money? BLACK FRIDAY. Shopping heaven or hell? Christmas is in the air. This is the season to be jolly and celebrate the spirit of goodwill to all men. However it seems to have become a season of shopping, materialism and chaos. Over a decade ago, major US retailers decided to kick start the Christmas shopping season with a day of bargains, with prices slashed up to 50 or even 80%. The event was held on the day after Thanksgiving (the last Friday of November) and became known as Black Friday. Now many other countries have embraced this retail ritual and Black Friday is a yearly sales bonanza in many countries, included Spain. Results: Shopping sprees battles animal behavior and chaos in shopping centers. The Winners: clearly the retail industry (millions of sales both in the shops and online) and maybe some shoppers who manage to hunt bargains too. DISCUSSION: I would like to think Christmas is all about intangibles like being with family and friends and not about buying widescreen TVs What is your opinion about Black Friday? 3 WRITING: Opinion essay: What is your opinion about Black Friday? Do you think it s important for trade and the economy, or simply shameless materialism? THE MILLENNIALS Definition: People who were born around the Millennium (year 2000). The mass media seems fascinated about this generation and are trying the label them. They are taking over the world but how will your generation deal with the biggest challenges ever? Due to globalization, social media and the speed of cultural change millennials worldwide are more similar to one another than to older generations. They face up to an extremely challenging future (turbulent global political and economical climate, debt, housing and joblessness) Hopes and fears: Education: Finding a job is more difficult than it was for older generations (less jobs, no security, low incomes), still many Millennials are determined to pursue their career dreams. Housing: more young adults now live with their parents. Rocketing house prices, high rent demands, low wages and weak job security. Money: less young people have part time jobs (less opportunities, more pressure on students Tech social media: they are part of the high tech revolution and confess to depend on their tech devices.

Millennials are accused of being lazy, self involved, pampered, who can t function without a smartphone and are incapable of commitment They are a generation marked by creativity, open mindness, and a strong sense of social responsibility Giving the highly competitive market, how would you get a foot in the door of an organization you d like to work for? 5 Describe your generation using three adjectives, and write your reasons. WRITING: Opinion essay What is your opinion about Millennials? Are they ready to meet difficult challenges? Do you feel pressure from your parents to do well at school? / Does going to university guaratee you a better job? THE SNOWFLAKE GENERATION 2016 s word of the year, it s a negative term and it is often used to describe today s young adults. Teens are often considered to be too sensitive and too easily offended, overprotected by their parents, lazy and unfit, and obsessed with selfies and social media. UK IMMIGRANTS IN THEIR OWN WORDS Immigration is the most controversial political issue in Europe today. Thousands of people over the world seek freedom, new homes and jobs or just to start afresh. How should European countries respond to the crisis? Opponents say immigrants put too much pressure on public housing and services and take jobs from British workers.
