1 20.07 The Caribbeanization of North America 3 hours lecture, 3 credits Bulletin Description: The formation of Caribbean societies and their impact on the United States. Migration to the United States, its selection process and settlement patterns. The transformation of immigrants in the United States and their transformation of American society. Prerequisite: Junior standing and satisfaction of all lower-tier requirements in Philosophical and Social Inquiry. Common General Education Goals Addressed By This Course: 1. To develop an awareness of the working and development of modern societies in an interdependent world. (6, 25) 2. To develop and understanding of the past, including world history, the material and cultural foundations of ancient civilizations, and their relationship to the shaping of the modern world (3) 3. To express one s thoughts orally and in writing with clarity and precision. (11, 12, 13) 4. To develop and understanding of the diversity of U.S. society in relationship to other cultures and globalization. (24, 25) Course Objectives: 1. To develop an understanding of the formation of Caribbean cultures and societies and their role in a hemispheric context. (3, 6, 25). 2. To understand the economic and geopolitical role that the Caribbean has played in American history. (24, 25) 3. To understand Caribbean migration as it transforms the migrants and the United States. (24, 25) 4. To use the concepts of the social sciences including history to explain orally and in writing the relationships of the Caribbean and the United States. (11, 12, 13) Outcomes for this Core Course: 1. Students will be able to summarize in writing the major concepts and ideas expressed in the readings and class discussions (3,6,11, 25) 2. Students will be able to express in writing, an integrated view of the course s subject matter (24, 25). 3. Students will be able to use social and historical data to understand current events (11,12, 13, 28).

Students will write brief essays summarizing key concepts and events and discussing their importance to understanding Caribbean societies and the transformation of Caribbean migrants in the United States. (Outcome 1) 2. Students will write essays discussing the impact of migration to the United States and the impact of Caribbean migrants on United States society and culture. (Outcomes 1, 2) 3. Students will select newspaper articles related to the Caribbean and United States as starting points for discussions of the ways the key themes and ideas of the course point to understanding of the present. (Outcome 3)
